(AP) — The lawyer for the family of a missing northeast Kansas man says a body found Tuesday matches the description of the man, who has been missing since Sunday.

Attorney Henry Cox says Johnson County sheriff’s deputies contacted the family of 22-year-old Brad Cook of Olathe on Tuesday to confirm what clothing Cook was wearing when he disappeared. Cox says the clothes on the body found in De Soto match what Cook was wearing.

Cox says that deputies would not say anything about the cause of death. A medical examination will be conducted Wednesday.

Cook left his home in Olathe without his cellphone or wallet. His motorcycle was found a few hours later in a strip mall’s parking lot in De Soto.

(AP) — Missouri Treasurer Clint Zweifel says his office has returned $1.7 million worth of unclaimed property to five account owners in the first quarter of the state’s fiscal year.

In a news release Tuesday, Zweifel’s office identified the recipients only as large company; a St. Louis-area office for a national company; a law firm; a Kansas City-area company; and a woman living in the St. Louis area.

Zweifel says his office currently is holding more than $760 million of unclaimed property for 4.6 million account holders. Missourians can go to the website www.showmemoney.com to search the treasurer’s database.

(AP) – Missouri has awarded an additional $4.2 million in grants to improve facilities at six child care centers around the state.

Gov. Jay Nixon is touting the funding through the Department of Economic Development as part of what he calls the “Missouri Start Smart” initiative to expand access to early childhood education.

The money will help expand three preschool facilities in the St. Louis area, one in the Macon area in northern Missouri, and one each in the Calhoun and Polo school districts in western Missouri.

The latest grants raise the total to $7.1 million so far this year.

A former southwest Missouri doctor has been sentenced to two years in prison without parole for illegally distributing prescription painkillers.

The U.S. Attorney’s office said Tuesday that 76-year-old Nolan Denny Crisp, of Halfway, must also pay a $10,000 fine under the sentence he received in federal court.

Crisp worked from June 2009 to November 2010 at a clinic in Bolivar, providing pain management and other medical services. He pleaded guilty in April to one criminal count, admitting he wrote prescriptions for a person with whom he had a sexual relationship.

But clinic staff reported also seeing him dole out prescriptions in a parking lot to people who were not patients.

5:20 p.m.  A child who was killed by a bullet by a man shooting at a target has been identified as a 4-year-old Branson girl.

Christian County coroner on Tuesday identified the girl as Zoie Dougan. She died Monday after being shot outside a Rogersville area home she was visiting with her mother.

Sheriff Joey Kyle says the man who pulled the trigger was being held on an unrelated warrant for an unpaid traffic ticket in Webster County. No charges were immediately filed in the shooting.

Kyle says the man was firing a .22-caliber rifle at an old jug when Zoie ran out from behind a building into the path of a bullet.

She was shot in the head and died while being flown to a Springfield hospital.

10:30 a.m. (AP) – Authorities say a man has killed a 4-year-old girl while target shooting in southwest Missouri.

The shooting happened Monday afternoon south of Rogersville. Christian County Sheriff Joey Kyle says a 24-year-old man was shooting with a .22-caliber rifle when a girl who was visiting his home walked into his path of fire. The girl was struck in the head.

The man who shot the girl was arrested on an outstanding warrant from Webster County, but was taken to the Christian County jail in Ozark. Kyle says he will be held there as deputies investigate the shooting.

Authorities didn’t immediate release the name of the man who was target shooting or the girl who was killed.

 (AP) The Missouri Supreme Court has ruled against a Highway Patrol trooper’s same-sex partner who sought survivor benefits.

Patrol Cpl. Dennis Engelhard died in December 2009 when he was struck by a vehicle while investigating an accident on Interstate 44 in Eureka.

Missouri law entitles surviving spouses of Highway Patrol officers killed in the line of duty to an annuity. Engelhard’s partner, Kelly Glossip, did not receive the benefit.

In a 5-2 ruling Tuesday, the Supreme Court said Glossip was denied benefits because he and Engelhard were not married – not because of his sexual orientation.

The court noted that Glossip had not challenged Missouri’s prohibition of same-sex marriage.

AP) – A new center focused on urban education is getting going at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

The Urban Education Research Center is a nonpartisan research arm of the university’s School of Education. Through research and analysis, the center will look for solutions to urban education challenges.

It will place a special focus on serving the greater Kansas City community, although the hope is that communities throughout the country can benefit from its work.

A special launch event was planned for Tuesday night.
