Temps in the upper 70s with rain and possible storms today

Scattered showers, that spread north overnight, will persist through the day across eastern Kansas and Missouri as a slow moving weather system spins it’s way east across the Plains States today and Wednesday. The rain today and Wednesday will be very hit-or-miss due to the scattered nature of the storms, though it’s likely that everyone will get a least a little bit of rain. Thus, rainfall totals will likely range from a couple tenths of an inch to just over an inch across the region by the end of Wednesday. Additionally, the rain and cloud cover will help keep temperatures a little below normal for mid-August. Here’s the 7-day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Today: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 78. East wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Tonight: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 1 a.m., then a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 68. East southeast wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 85. North wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 65. North wind 3 to 7 mph.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 88. Calm wind becoming northwest around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Thursday Night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 67. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Friday: A chance of showers before 1 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 86. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 87.

Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 67.

Sunday Night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Brief: McCaskill and Hawley on Medical Pot, Tensions High in KS Gov Vote Count, A Positive Stat for the Struggling Royals

The vote in Kansas must be finalized by August 31, and it might take that long to get it.

Kobach assistant Eric Rucker and Colyer’s chief counsel, Brant Laue, offered competing views of Kansas law governing provisional ballots completed by unaffiliated voters. The issue is whether votes should count if a volunteer poll worker made a mistake.

Colyer’s campaign has expressed concerns since last week about unaffiliated voters who were incorrectly instructed to vote provisionally instead of declaring a party and casting a normal ballot.

Poll workers to blame?

“We had one (polling) location where that happened…These are citizens. We train them. We train them hard. There were a number of problems at that location.”

The unaffiliated voters were part of a larger group of 264 voters in Johnson County who were incorrectly told by poll workers to cast provisional ballots. All of those votes will count, Metsker said.

In general election news, national Democrats have their eyes, and money, on Kansans in Congress.

Kansas Democratic congressional candidate Sharice Davids is getting help.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee on Friday named Davids to its “red-to-blue” list of top-tier candidates, which makes her eligible for organizational and fundraising help, staff resources and candidate training.

The committee on Thursday began airing a television ad in the Kansas City market supporting Davids.

McCaskill:

“I do think medical marijuana should be passed.”

“I think it is time that we make additional investments in our infrastructure,” she said. “And I join our Republican governor and our Republican lieutenant governor in supporting the gas tax.

“I certainly think an increase in minimum wage is appropriate,” McCaskill said, “and I couldn’t be more enthusiastic about CLEAN Missouri.”

Hawley was noncomittal.

“I’m glad they’re on the ballot,” Hawley said when asked about medical marijuana, the gasoline tax and the minimum wage increase. “I think the people should have their say on all of them. I think it’s up to the voters.

“I’m still studying the language on each one of those,” he said, when pressed on his positions. The campaign did not respond to a follow-up question about Hawley’s position on CLEAN Missouri.

Speaking of change in leadership:

“Just because you’re in your last year doesn’t mean your job is over,” he said on a recent morning behind his desk on the 29th floor of City Hall.

“If that’s the case, go ahead and pay me my salary for the next 12 months ($129,000) and I’ll go sit on the beach or something.”

The ground is thirsty. Help incoming?

Back to school safety time!

A centuries-old tree is no more.

The Kansas City Royals are 35-82, and might be headed for a historic loss number this season. Here’s a bright spot:

Chillicothe to put up signs designating it as a Purple Heart City

Chillicothe City Hall. Photo courtesy Missourinet.

(Missourinet) – Chillicothe is placing signs soon to show its support for America’s soldiers who have received the Purple Heart medal.

City Administrator Darin Chappell said the signs will state the northwest Missouri town is known as a “Purple Heart City” to pay respect to the medal recipients who have been wounded or killed in combat.

“It’s something that many communities across the state have done,” he says. “This is just in recognition of those individuals who, during combat, were wounded, received the Purple Heart and recognize the support that we have for such dedicated servants of our community and our society.”

Missouri has more than 120 cities, villages, counties and organizations recognizing Purple Heart medal soldiers in such a way.

Chappell says the declaration process is more than a year in the making.

“There will be four signs purchased for $100 each,” he says. “There will be one north and south on Highway 65 and one east and west on Highway 36.”

The signs will go up at the city limits.
