KAMLOOPS – Last year’s up and coming quarterback is now down and out for the B.C. Lions.

Second-year player Travis Partridge, who last season looked like he might be a keeper, was one of eight players released Sunday by head coach Jeff Tedford as the Canadian Football League team pared its training camp roster to the mandated limit of 65 (excluding non-counters).

Nickelback Torri Williams, who dressed for 16 games last season, and defensive back Derrick Morgan, running back Brendan Bigelow, offensive linemen John Estes and Kaycee Ike, defensive lineman Alex King and receiver Reggie Jordan were also let go. Jordan, a late addition to camp, played college football with Partridge at Missouri Western.

In a pitched battle with rookies Jon Jennings and Greg McGhee for a roster spot, Partridge is another classic example of a young quarterback unable to keep pace with the development timeline set out for him. Chris Hart (2014) and Corey Leonard (2012) were other developing quarterbacks of recent vintage who didn’t last past their second Lions’ training camp.

The turnover of head coaches from Mike Benevides to Tedford and changes in offensive philosophy also didn’t work to his advantage, although Partridge insisted he didn’t feel extra pressure, being a holdover player forced to prove himself again under a new regime.

“I don’t think there’s any added pressure because there’s a new coaching staff,” he said. “It’s a new system, but I know about (CFL) defences a little more (as a second-player player).”

Partridge dressed for 14 games last season as the team’s third quarterback and saved his best for last, throwing for two touchdown passes after relieving starter Kevin Glenn in a 53-17 East Division semi-final blowout loss to the Montreal Alouettes.

Unfortunately, he was unable to build on that modest success in his second camp, with Jennings and McGhee, two of Tedford’s recruits, looking more the part of what the noted quarterback guru wanted.

Though the Lions failed to score a touchdown in Friday’s 20-6 preseason defeat in Calgary, Jennings put up decent, if not spectacular numbers, showed poise, defensive recognition and the ability to handle and elude the kind of pressure he’ll face in the CFL. He completed five of 11 passes for 116 yards, one of them a 62-yard pass to Terence Jeffers-Harris, a late addition who has stood out in camp.

“Some good things happened, and some not-so-good things happened,” Jennings explained. “But it’s all learning material. I was glad to go out there and show I could make a couple of plays. But there’s some things I need to work on as well.”

Partridge completed two of four passes for a cumulative three yards against the Stampeders. He was intercepted on his second play from scrimmage, evidence that he was forcing the ball and likely aware of falling behind Jennings and McGhee. Interceptions had also bedeviled Partridge in training camp.

Jennings, just 22, graduated from Saginaw Valley State in 2013 as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s player of the year, throwing for 31 touchdowns and running for 12 more. Those eye-popping stats earned him invites to mini-camps with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Kansas City Chiefs, Detroit Lions and a workout with the Green Bay Packers.

“I had a blessed career in Saginaw,” Jennings said. “I didn’t have any injuries. None. Not like high school.”

Jennings grew up in Columbus, Ohio and went to Westerville South, the same school that produced former Lions receiver Nick Moore, now with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and his older brother, Lance Moore, an NFL veteran receiver who has moved on to Detroit.

He broke his ankle and elbow in his sophomore year of high school, played safety in his junior year and fractured his collarbone as a senior quarterback, completing just half a season. That spotty participation record partly explains why Jennings ended up at an NCAA Division II school, where he excelled.

During his 43-game career with the Cardinals, he threw for 10,710 yards and 96 touchdowns.

With the Lions, Jennings is seen as more than just a developmental quarterback. Tedford has declared the backup position behind Travis Lulay to be “wide open.” In addition, Lulay’s history of shoulder troubles could transform his backup pivot into the starter, as it did last season with Glenn.

“It’s very interesting,” Jennings agreed. “I’ve always prided myself on being ready for the next opportunity. I’m just trying to be ready to help this team any way I can.”

Missouri Western finalizes 2015 football schedule

riggertMissouriWesternST. JOSEPH – With all spring sports seasons at Missouri Western now complete, preparations are underway for the fall sports seasons, including the 2015 Missouri Western football schedule.

The 46th year of Griffon Football will feature six home games and for the first time in a number of years, no night games at Spratt Memorial Stadium. Renovations at the home of Griffon Football since 1979 will leave the stadium without lights for the 2015 season.

For the fourth consecutive season, Missouri Western will open with Central Missouri. After a thrilling, 10-9 victory at home over the Mules in 2014, the Griffons have won 11 of the last 12 games between the two, including the last four. MWSU travels to Warrensburg on Sept. 4 for a Thursday night game at 7 p.m.

The home opener this year will be a Saturday afternoon rather than the traditional Thursday night home debut Griffon fans have grown accustomed to. MWSU will play its first home contest on Sept. 12 versus Central Oklahoma. The Griffons then travel to Oklahoma to take on Northeastern State on Sept. 19 in their last scheduled night game of the season at 6 p.m.

The fourth game of the season will be a celebration of Missouri Western’s Centennial along with Founder’s Day and Family Day at MWSU. That game will be on Sept. 26 versus Lindenwood as the Lions make their first ever trip to St. Joseph. In week five, MWSU travels to Pittsburg, Kansas, to take on Pittsburg State on the Gorillas’ homecoming. It will be the Griffons first trip to Pittsburg since 2012 when MWSU defeated the then defending national champions, 63-14.

Weeks six and seven will both be home games for the Griffons with Fort Hays visiting on Oct. 10 as part of Hall of Fame Day. The next week will be homecoming for Missouri Western as Washburn visits Spratt Stadium. The Ichabods have not claimed a victory in St. Joseph since the 2007 season.

After two-straight at home, MWSU hits the road in week eight for a matchup with Emporia State on Oct. 24. The Hornets have won the last two meetings, both in St. Joseph. In the Griffons’ last trip to Emporia State, they knocked off the 15th ranked Hornets, 57-28.

Halloween marks the annual rivalry matchup between Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State. The Bearcats travel to St. Joseph in 2015 after two-straight wins over MWSU. The Griffons make the trip to Kearney, Nebraska in week 10, playing at Nebraska-Kearney on Nov. 7. Senior Day comes for the Griffons in the last week of the regular season as Missouri Southern visits Spratt Stadium. The Lions have won their last two games in St. Joseph and have only played in Spratt Stadium three times since 2007.

The Griffons return a host of experienced players in 2015, including most of the starters on both sides of the ball. After a 7-4 record in 2014, Jerry Partridge is 139-71 in 18 seasons as the Griffons’ head coach. Coach Partridge is 107-56 against MIAA opponents.

Missouri Western’s season ends with loss to Arkansas Tech in NCAA Central Regional

MWSUWARRENSBURG, Mo. – The Missouri Western softball team had its season come to an end Saturday as they lost to Arkansas Tech 4-1 in an elimination game at the NCAA Division II Central Regional at Warrensburg.

The Griffons scored one in the first and held that lead until the fourth when Arkansas Tech scored three then added another in the fourth. MWSU stranded 10 runners on base and scored one run on five hits, four walks and three Arkansas Tech errors. The loss dropped MWSU’s season record to 36-21.

The Griffons scored their lone run in the first after Morgan Rathmann led off with a single through the left side. She stole second and advanced to third on a Sydney Washington single to right then scored on a wild pitch. Arkansas Tech led off the fourth with a single then advanced the runner to second with a sacrifice bunt. An RBI single tied the game at one then a walk and a double made it a 3-1 Arkansas Tech lead.

MWSU had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the fourth but had a runner thrown out at home on a fielder’s choice and a groundout ended the inning. The Griffons got two more on with one out in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back walks by Paige Shifflett and Kailey Green but another threat was stopped with a pop up and a strikeout to end the inning.

Janie Smith took the loss to fall to 19-13 on the year. She went seven innings, giving up all four runs, three earned, on seven hits. She walked four and struck out one. Washington went 2-4 at the plate. Rathmann, Katie Klosterman and Shelbie Atwell had the other Griffon hits.

Griffons drop NCAA Tournament opener to Central Missouri 7-2

MWSUWARRENSBURG, Mo. – For the fourth time this season, the Missouri Western softball team couldn’t best Central Missouri, falling 7-2 after allowing six Jennie runs in the sixth inning. This one was bigger than the first three as it handed MWSU its first loss in the NCAA Division II Central Region and left the Griffons one loss away from ending their season.

Missouri Western led 2-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth and Janie Smith coaxed the first Jennie batter to pop up to Shelbie Atwell at shortstop. Then the Jennies rattled off five straight hits to take a 4-2 lead. Carlie Rose got the streak started with a double to left before Madison Hood singled to second base. Then Kaite Giacone, the eight hole hitter, blasted a three-run home run to straight away center field to put give the Jennies a two-run lead. The UCM run didn’t stop there as Makayla Schoonover singled through the right side and Ali Jo Rogers had another infield hit before Sydney Washington had a Lindsey Dawson fly to left go in and out of her glove to score two more runs. A walk, wild pitch and an RBI single made it a 7-2 lead before the Griffons could get out of the inning. Katie Shockley retired the Griffons in order to end the game and improve the Jennies record to 45-14 on the year.

Smith got off to a brilliant start, striking out five through the first two innings and allowing just five hits and one run through the first five innings. She stepped into the circle with a one-run lead after an RBI double by Tiffany Gillaspy put MWSU up 1-0 in the first. The Griffons made it 2-0 in the fourth when Paige Shifflett hit her ninth home run of the season on the first pitch of the inning. Shockley buckled down from that point on, allowing just one more Griffon hit after Shifflett’s homer in the fourth.

Smith fell to 19-12 on the season, giving up 11 hits and seven runs, five of them earned. She struck out five and walked three. MWSU had just four hits, getting two from Morgan Rathmann and one each from Gillaspy and Shifflett.

Missouri Western will play an elimination game Saturday at 2:30 PM against Arkansas Tech.  The game will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 and here on StJosephPost.com.
