MWSU’s Anna Mayer named MIAA Goalkeeper of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In her seventh collegiate soccer game, Anna Mayer accomplished what no one had in 58 consecutive tries. Missouri Western’s freshman goalkeeper shutout Central Missouri, Friday night, and for her efforts was named MIAA Goalkeeper of the Week.

Mayer stopped 11 UCM shots Friday to end the then No. 1 Jennies’ streak of 58 games with at least a goal. The Duluth, Minnesota native’s first-career shutout helped the Griffons snap the defending national champion’s 32-game winning streak and end Missouri Western’s 24-game losing streak to UCM. Sunday, Mayer did allow a goal in the Griffons’ 1-0 loss to Lindenwood, but the freshman goalkeeper is still 5-2 on the season and sports the MIAA’s second-best save percentage (.870) and third-best goals against average (.882).

It was the second-straight week Griffon Soccer was represented in the MIAA weekly women’s soccer awards. Cassidy Menke was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 18.

Missouri Western stays home this week to face Emporia State and Washburn. The Griffons could make another statement win on Friday. Emporia State will enter ranked No. 6 in the United Soccer Coaches Central Region poll while the Griffons sit at No. 8.

Missouri Western soccer gets blanked by Lindenwood in MIAA opener

ST. JOSEPH – The Missouri Western soccer team (5-3) was shut out 1-0 in its Sunday afternoon match against Lindenwood (4-3-1). Tough defense by both teams led to limited scoring opportunities throughout the game as the Griffons suffered a letdown after upsetting No. 1 Central Missouri on Friday.

NOTABLES

  • The game remained scoreless throughout most of the game and looked to be heading for overtime. The game’s lone goal was scored in the 78th minute off of a Lindenwood corner kick.
  • Missouri Western is now 0-1 in MIAA league play since Sunday’s game was the first game that counts towards conference records.
  • Lindenwood won the rematch between the teams. The Griffons defeated the Lions 3-1 on September 14.
  • Coach Chad Edwards used several different lineups and played 22 student-athletes throughout the game.

STATS AND LEADERS

  • The Griffons managed only 8 shots, which is their lowest total of the season.
  • Cassidy Menke and Taylor Schwartzkopf led Missouri Western with each having two shots on goal.
  • Lindenwood had seven corner kicks, including the kick that led to the game’s only goal.
  • The offensive struggle led to a physical game Sunday afternoon, as the Lions committed 12 fouls.

Griffons roll past Northeastern State 66-16

ST. JOSEPH – The Missouri Western football team (2-2) made sure fans didn’t have to wait until after the game to see fireworks, Saturday night, racking up a season-high 612 yards of total offense in a 66-16 rout of Northeastern State (0-4).

NOTABLES

  • Missouri Western rushed for 326 yards and four touchdowns while holding Northeastern State to 54 rushing yards on 40 carries
  • It was the first 300-yard rushing game for the team since week 10 of the 2017 season (Emporia State)
  • The 612 yards of offense were the most by the team since putting up 612 against Central Oklahoma in week four of the 2017 season
  • Missouri Western’s 66 points were 23 more than the Griffons had scored through their first three games, total
  • After scoring just one first quarter touchdown through their first three games, MWSU exploded for three first quarter scores, leading 21-0 after the first
  • Dom Marino’s 6-yard touchdown strike to Luke Vang with 6:34 left in the first quarter was the Griffons’ first touchdown pass to a player that wasn’t a running back this season. Marino added another to Keylan Mack in the first quarter and Steigerwald had three in the second half.
  • James Bailey Jr. became the first Griffon rusher to eclipse 100 yards (151) since Shamar Griffith against Emporia State last year
  • Northeastern State became the first team to intercept the Griffons this season, picking off a Marino pass in the second quarter
  • Missouri Western sacked Northeastern State quarterbacks six times and limited the RiverHawks to just 156 total yards
  • Brandin Dandridge’s second quarter interception was the third of his career against Northeastern State, one in each of the last three seasons
  • Six Griffons either scored or threw the first touchdown of their Griffon career
  • Tyler Basch was 2-for-2 on field goals with a long of 44, but was 6-of-9 on point after attempts with two of them blocked

  • James Bailey Jr. rushed 16 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 9.4 yards per carry
  • Shamar Griffith also had a pair of rushing touchdowns, the first of his career coming just two minutes into the game. Griffith rushed for 68 yards, averaging 9.7 per rush
  • Marino averaged 13.2 yards per carry on five rushes
  • Marino finished 13-of-20 for 158 yards, two touchdowns and an interception
  • Wyatt Steigerwald was an efficient 4-for-6 for 128 yards and three touchdowns in relief of Marino late in the game
  • Keylan Mack led the Griffons with four catches for 67 yards and a score
  • Carlos Thompson had his first touchdown as a Griffon, a 74-yard catch and run from Steigerwald in the fourth quarter

  • Thompson led the Griffons with 205 all-purpose yards, combining 91 yards receiving with 114 return yards

Western volleyball blows 2-0 lead, falls at Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. – The Missouri Western volleyball team (9-7, 2-3) ended its week on the road with a five-set loss at Missouri Southern (2-12, 2-3), Saturday afternoon. After jumping out to a comfortable 2-0 lead on the Lions, the Griffons saw leads evaporate in each of the next three sets.

NOTABLES

  • Missouri Western led 22-16, 23-19 and 24-23 in the third before losing the set 27-25
  • Southern closed the fourth on a 7-3 run to win the set 25-23 and force the fifth
  • After falling behind 5-2 in the fifth, the Griffons rallied to take a 10-8 lead, but three-straight MWSU attack errors tied the set. The Griffons last lead in the fifth was at 12-11. Southern led the rest of the way
  • It was the first loss for the Griffons in the series since 2010, snapping a streak of 15-straight wins over Missouri Southern
  • The Griffons are now 0-4 in five-set matches this season after going 4-0 in five last season

  • After hitting .556 as a team in the first and .300 in the second, the Griffons hit .106, .021 and .000, respectively in the next three
  • Liv Winker posted her first career double-double, with a career-high 46 assists and 13 digs. She added four kills, three aces and a block

Griffon soccer upsets No. 1 Central Missouri 1-0

ST. JOSEPH – Streaks of unbelievable success and frustration totaling 114 games and 13 years came to an end Friday night on Craig Field at Spratt Memorial Stadium.

Sara Collins’ header off a corner kick in the 31st minute gave the Missouri Western soccer team (5-2) a historic upset victory over No. 1-ranked Central Missouri (6-1). Collins’ first goal of the season lifted Missouri Western to a 1-0 win, its first-ever against the Jennies

STREAKS ENDED

  • Central Missouri, the defending national champions, entered on a 32-game win streak with its last loss coming in the 2016 postseason
  • The Jennies had scored a goal in 58-straight games. Their last shutout loss came on Oct. 18, 2015 to Northeastern State
  • Missouri Western defeated Central Missouri for the first time in program history, snapping a streak of 24-straight losses to the Jennies
  • Central Missouri was the only MIAA team remaining the soccer program had yet to defeat
  • It was the first win over a No. 1-ranked team for any Missouri Western sport since men’s basketball defeated No. 1 Missouri Southern, 75-67, on Dec. 7, 2011

  • Mackenzie O’Neill got the assist, her first of the season. It was O’Neill’s first corner of the game after Madeline Cowell took the first five for Missouri Western

Missouri Western volleyball sweeps Southwest Baptist

BOLIVAR, Mo. – Missouri Western (9-6) swept Southwest Baptist (4-3) on Friday in Bolivar. The 25-14, 25-21, 25-19 sweep gives Missouri Western its first MIAA road victory of the season and brings their conference record to 2-2.

NOTABLES

  • After Friday’s match, Missouri Western has now defeated Southwest Baptist in each of the last 10 matchups.
  • Liv Winker had her first start of the season, starting all three sets for the Griffons.
  • Friday night was the Griffons first sweep since defeating Newman on September 8.

STATS AND LEADERS

  • The Griffons outhit the Bearcats in every set and ended the night with a .318 percentage. Their best hitting set came in the first as they hit .414.
  • Southwest Baptist was held to a .047 hitting percentage.
  • Liv Winker led all players with 30 assists.

Griffon volleyball gets swept by Northwest Missouri State

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Missouri Western volleyball team lost in three sets at Northwest Missouri Tuesday night. The loss drops the Griffons to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in the MIAA. Northwest improved to 11-3 and 3-0 in league play.

NOTABLES

  • The sets were closer than the match score with 29 ties and 11 lead changes, including 17 ties and nine lead changes in the first set
  • Missouri Western led set one, 22-21, but Northwest ended on a 4-0 run to take an early 1-0 lead
  • The Griffons jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the third and led 13-11 before a Northwest run flipped things on MWSU which quickly trailed 16-14
  • Missouri Western fought back to tie set three at 19 each, but never led again
  • MWSU held the MIAA’s top hitting percentage team to a .196 clip, the third lowest total of the season for the Bearcats
  • Liv Winker played the entire third set at setter, posting 10 assists, two kills and two blocks
  • It was just the second loss for MWSU in the last 12 meetings between the two teams
  • The loss was the Griffons’ first in Maryville since 2012
  • Missouri Western dropped the first set for just the third time this season, all resulted in losses

  • Shellby Taylor led the team with nine kills and a .241 hitting percentage. Her 11.5 points were also a team high

McCarthy takes fourth as MWSU men finish play at NSU Classic

MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Missouri Western Men’s Golf finished the third round at the NSU Classic in the near-100 degree heat on Tuesday. Patrick McCarthy jumped from ninth place up to fourth place by shooting one of the best third rounds of anyone in the field, finishing the day with a 68. The Griffons finished tied for ninth in the team standings.

McCarthy was able to jump five spots in the final round on Tuesday. He matched his first round 68 with another score of 68 in the final round to end the NSU Classic at nine-under par. McCarthy was named to the NSU Men’s Golf Classic All-Tournament team for his top-five finish. His fourth-place finish gives McCarthy his best finish of the early season after getting sixth at the Mule Invitational in the team’s only other tournament.

McCarthy was not the only Griffon to shoot up the leaderboards in the final round. Tom Buffington shot a 69 in the third round, vaulting him up 18 spots to finish the tournament 26th. Buffington had the second-best score for the Griffons with an overall score of 214.

Missouri Western will have some time off before heading to Albuquerque, New Mexico for the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate on October 1.

Western’s Menke named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The MIAA announced Tuesday that Missouri Western forward Cassidy Menke was voted MIAA Offensive Player of the Week. It is Menke’s first time receiving the award this season, as she earned the honor three times last season.

Menke earns the honor after leading the Griffons to a 2-0 weekend against Lindenwood and Northwest Missouri. Menke scored her first goal of the weekend against the Lions to put the game away at 3-1. She was getting good looks all night on Friday, totaling four shots on goal in the game.

In Sunday’s game against the Bearcats, Menke scored her third goal of the season in the 10th minute to put the Griffons up 1-0. The Griffons held that lead the entire game and defeated the Bearcats 4-0. She also set up the next Missouri Western goal as she assisted Claire Meyers’ goal in the 65th minute.

Menke is first on the team with three goals and seven total points. The program’s all-time leader in career goals has been a key part of the Griffon offense in the early season, with the fifth-most shots of anyone in the MIAA.

MWSU men’s golf sits tied for ninth after day one at Northeastern State

MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Missouri Western Men’s Golf sits tied for ninth place after day one at the NSU Men’s Golf Classic. Patrick McCarthy leads the Griffons after the first two rounds and is currently tied for ninth on the individual leaderboards.

The Griffons got out to a hot start as a team and finished the first round with a score of 280. Missouri Western was in fifth place going into the second round but was unable to duplicate the results of the first round. The team finished the second round with a 292 and dropped down to ninth place going into Tuesday.

Patrick McCarthy played consistent in the first two rounds and finished -4. He posted a 68 in the first round before following with a 70 in the second round. McCarthy currently sits tied for ninth.

Tom Buffington is the second Griffon on the leaderboards with a 145 and tied for 44th. Buffington has the second-best round of anyone on the Griffons at the event, shooting a 69 in the first round.

Missouri Western will tee off the third round of the NSU Classic at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
