Mizzou’s Harris taken by Miami Dolphins in first round of NFL Draft

riggertMissouriPHILADELPHIA, PA. – Mizzou junior defensive end Charles Harris (Kansas City, Mo.) was selected tonight with the No. 22 overall pick in the first round of the 2017 National Football League Draft by the Miami Dolphins.

Harris becomes the eighth Mizzou standout since 2009 to be drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft, with five of those being defensive linemen – joining Harris were Shane Ray (No. 23 to Denver in 2015), Sheldon Richardson (No. 13 to New York Jets in 2013), Aldon Smith (No. 7 to San Francisco in 2011) and Ziggy Hood (No. 32 to Pittsburgh in 2009). Mizzou’s other first-rounders since 2009 include QB Blaine Gabbert (No. 10 to Jacksonville in 2011), LB Sean Weatherspoon (No. 19 to Atlanta in 2010) and WR Jeremy Maclin (No. 19 to Philadelphia in 2009).

Overall, Harris is the 20th Tiger in history to be taken in the NFL Draft’s first round.

Harris chose to bypass his final year of eligibility and enter the Draft, after turning in an outstanding junior season that saw him lead Mizzou in quarterback sacks (9.0), tackles for loss (12.0) and quarterback hurries (10), while also finishing second on the team with 61 total tackles. Despite playing just three years for the Tiger defense, Harris ended his career ranked seventh all-time at Mizzou in sacks, with 18.0.

Several other Tigers hope to hear their name called during the remainder of the 2017 NFL Draft. The second and third rounds take place Friday, beginning at 6 p.m. central time, while rounds four through seven will be held Saturday with an 11 a.m. start time.

Mizzou loses another game to Missouri State

riggertMissouriSPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri State got solo homers from Justin Paulsen and Hunter Steinmetz and a three-run shot in the eighth to earn a 5-1 win over Mizzou Baseball Tuesday night (April 25) at Hammons Field. Mizzou junior RHP Andy Toelken (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) was a tough-luck loser as he was touched for just the two solo homers over 5.0 innings while striking out four and scattering only five hits. MSU’s Austin Knight earned the win after 6.2 innings, allowing just three hits while striking out five against no walks. He retired 15 Mizzou batters in a row at one point. The loss drops Mizzou to 27-15 on the year while Missouri State goes to 28-13.

Freshman OF Kameron Misner (Poplar Bluff, Mo.) tallied a one-out hit in the first, but he was erased on a 4-6-3 double play to end the Tigers’ half of the first. Toelken came out and Missouri State leadoff hitter Hunter Steinmetz tallied leadoff infield single to short to start Missouri State’s half of the inning. MSU 2B Aaron Meyer then hit into a groundout to end the inning but appeared to injure his leg on the play. He was carted off to a standing ovation from the crowd.

Missouri State broke the stalemate it in the bottom of the fourth inning as Paulsen hit what looked like a harmless fly out to left, but the wind pushed it just over the 315-foot sign on the wall in left field for a solo homer, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead. The Bears added another run in the bottom of the fifth, again getting a leadoff homer, this time from the leadoff man Steinmetz.

Mizzou finally got to Knight a bit in the seventh after he had retired 15 straight Tiger batters. Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.) was hit by a pitch with one out and Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.) doubled to right center to put runners on second and third with one out. But the Tigers came up empty after a pair of strikeouts, stranding the tying runs in scoring position.

That was the best chance for Mizzou as it went quietly in the eighth. MSU then added a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth. Mizzou got a two-out RBI single from Bond in the ninth for its only scoring.

Mizzou will host Texas A&M at Taylor Stadium for the first time since 2011 this weekend. First pitch for the opener of the three-game series on Friday is at 6:30 p.m.

KU men’s basketball officially adds three transfers

riggertKULAWRENCE, Kan. – Brothers Dedric and K.J. Lawson from Memphis and Charlie Moore from California have signed grant-in-aid agreements to play men’s basketball at Kansas, head coach Bill Self announced Tuesday.

The Lawson brothers, who are listed as guards/forwards, are transferring to KU from Memphis where Dedric was a sophomore last season and K.J. a redshirt freshman. Moore is a guard coming to KU after one season at California. All three will sit out the 2017-18 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

“We’re excited about all three of these prospects,” Self said. “They’ve all had successful starts to their college careers at different institutions. Certainly, the transfers became so attractive to us, in large part because we will have guys in our program who will be ready to contribute in a year. We could lose multiple guys next year, so I think this is a great fit for the University of Kansas. Not only will we get better down the road but this will certainly make us better in practice next year.”

K.J. was named the 2017 American Athletic Conference (AAC) Rookie of the Year, an honor Dedric earned in 2016. Additionally, Dedric was a 2017 all-conference first team selection, while K.J. was a member of the AAC All-Rookie Team.

In 2016-17, Dedric (6-foot-9, 236 pounds) led the AAC and was 19th nationally in rebound average at 9.9 boards per game. His 19.2 scoring average was second in the conference and he was fifth in the league with a 46.1 field goal percentage. Dedric recorded 19 double-doubles on the season which was 11th nationally and tops in the AAC. Dedric scored a career-high 35 points against Iowa on Nov. 26, 2016.

“Averaging almost 20 points and 10 rebounds last year, Dedric is one of the best big-man prospects in the country,” Self said. “He was a double-double machine last year.”

As a freshman in 2015-16, Dedric averaged 15.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game and led Memphis with 17 double-doubles. His 9.3 rebounds per game were first in the AAC, while his points were fourth. Following his freshman campaign, Dedric entered the NBA Draft without an agent and returned to Memphis for his sophomore year.

K.J., (6-foot-7, 210 pounds), averaged 12.3 points and was third in the AAC with an 8.1 rebound average in 2016-17. He recorded nine double-doubles on the season. He scored a career-high 28 points against Houston on Jan. 19, 2017, and pulled down a career-best 19 rebounds against East Carolina on Jan. 28, 2017.

“K.J. averaged over 12 points and eight rebounds while playing the small forward position,” Self said. “He’s a very competitive athlete who we feel will add to our culture here.”

K.J. played in 10 games with two starts in 2015-16 and received a medical redshirt after a season-ending Achilles injury. He averaged 8.8 points and 3.5 rebounds in his brief stint in 2015-16.

Charlie Moore, winner of the 2016 Illinois Mr. Basketball award, started all 34 games for Cal last season with 12.0 ppg and 3.5 apg.

In his second-ever college game, Moore (5-foot-11, 170 pounds) scored a career-high 38 points against UC Irvine on Nov. 16, 2016. The Chicago native, who played at Morgan Park High School, averaged 28.8 minutes, 12.2 points and 3.5 assists in his lone season at California while starting all 34 games. His 3.5 assists per game ranked 11th in the Pac-12 Conference. Moore had four games of 20 more points and made 45 3-pointers for the season. California went 21-13 overall, tied for fifth in the Pac-12 with a 10-8 record and advanced to the postseason NIT.

“Charlie started at Cal this past year and averaged just over 12 points a game as a true freshman,” Self said. “We think after a year sitting out that he’ll be much like (KU sophomore transfer) Malik Newman will be for us this year, ready to make a serious contribution to our program.”
