Missouri Western’s Candi Whitaker adds three to first recruiting class

ST. JOSEPH – First year Missouri Western head women’s basketball coach Candi Whitaker has announced the signings of three junior college transfers for the 2019-20 season.

This round of signees will join Logan Hughes as new Griffons next season. The signing class will give the Griffons added size, with all four standing at least 5-10.

“All three signees bring size and experience to our team at the forward and post positions,” Whitaker said. “They are also strong students and great people.”

Corbyn Cunningham
6-0 | Albuquerque, N.M. | Howard (TX)
Cunningham was named to the Western Junior College Athletic Conference All-Conference team last year. She averaged 16.4 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, scoring in double figures in 26 of 29 games as a sophomore at Howard. Cunningham played 22.1 minutes per game and also averaged 1.7 assists per game her sophomore season. In her first season at Howard, Cunningham started 30 games and averaged 12.8 points and nine rebounds per game.
Whitaker on Cunningham: “Corbyn Cunningham is a terrific face-up player that can attack off the bounce from the high and low post. She is active on the glass and will impact us on the boards.”
Cunningham on MWSU: “I chose Missouri Western because I really like Coach Whitaker. She has great energy and experience. I like the size and feel of the campus as well as the support from the community.”

Miranda Stephens
6-1 | Willard, Ohio | Hill College
As a freshman at Hill, Stephens started 26 of 31 games, averaging 11.4 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. She shot 33.5 percent from three-point range, making 64 threes in 31 games. In her sophomore season at Hill, she averaged 6.7 points and three rebounds per game, shooting 37 percent from three point range with 47 made three pointers in 23 games. Stephens was twice named NJCAA Player of the Week and was an Academic All-Conference selection both years at Hill.
Whitaker on Stephens: “Miranda Stephens brings great versatility being able to play the 3, 4 and 5. She is a terrific three-point shooter, but also can use her size to score and defend in the post.”
Stephens on MWSU: “I chose Missouri Western because right away I felt so comfortable. Everything was a perfect fit for me, the academics, athletics, facilities and how personable the coaches and everyone I met was. It made Missouri Western feel like a second home for me right away. I can’t wait to be a Griffon!”

Kyra Hogan
6-1 | Louisville, Ky. | Wabash Valley College
Hogan averaged 4.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game last season as a sophomore at Wabash Valley College in Mount Carmel, Ill. She shot 48 percent from the field and scored a season-high 16 points against Southwestern Illinois College on 7-of-9 shooting. As a freshman, Hogan shot 50 percent from the field and averaged 3.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Hogan attended Louisville Male, one of the top high school programs in the nation where she averaged 11 points and six rebounds as a senior.
Whitaker on Hogan: “Kyra Hogan is a strong post player with soft hands. I love that Kyra knows how to use her size and strength inside, but has the skill set to step out and shoot the three.”
Hogan on MWSU: “I am thankful and beyond excited for the opportunity to continue my education and this basketball journey at Missouri Western. From the moment I stepped on campus and spent time with Coach Whitaker and the team, I felt at home. I am so ready to work hard and grow.”

Whitaker was named Missouri Western’s ninth head women’s basketball coach in April. The former Texas Tech and UMKC head coach took over a program that went 14-16 last season, advancing to the MIAA Championship quarterfinals for the sixth time in the past seven seasons.

Kansas defeat K-State 15-14 in 11 innings in opening round of the Big 12 Tournament

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Kansas’ James Cosentino delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning Thursday to give the fifth-seeded Jayhawks a 15-14 win over No. 8 K-State in an elimination game at the 2019 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

KU (32-25) scored all four of its runs in the 11th inning with two outs after the Wildcats (25-33) put up three in the top half of the inning. K-State catcher Chris Ceballos knocked a go-ahead single before a two-RBI double byDylan Phillips put the Cats ahead 14-11.

“It was a battle and we fought until the very end,” head coach Pete Hughes said after the game. “They are a good team and that’s just how it goes sometimes. We are a good team and we never gave up. We never cut any corners. We always try our best and sometimes you don’t end up on top, that’s baseball. I am excited for this team. We have a great group of guys and good things will come from the years to come. Guys like this, their fingerprints are all over it.”

Phillips registered a career-high five runs batted in, including a three-run homer, and finished the season tied for the team lead with 10 home runs – a freshman record by a Wildcat. Phillips’ five RBI set a K-State single-game record at the Big 12 Championship.

Ceballos went 3-for-6 with two RBI while Spurlin finished 2-for-5. Cameron Thompson also had a three-hit day, going 3-for-6 with a double.

Six different Wildcats produced multi-hit games, as K-State matched a season high with 15 hits while scoring a season-best 14 runs.

Cosentino’s game-winning single scored Casey Burnham, capping a string of five consecutive two-out hits. Jack Wagner tied the game with a single to left field to score Casey Burnham, as KU scored four runs on six hits off reliever Caleb Littlejim.

Littlejim had held the KU offense, which had put up 11 runs over the first seven innings, scoreless on one hit over his first three innings of work before suffering the loss. Littlejim (5-4) struck out one and walked one.

K-State erased an early five-run deficit after KU jumped out to a 6-1 lead after two frames. The Cats scored 10 runs from the fourth to the sixth inning and took an 11-7 lead after a five-run sixth. Phillips lifted a three-run home run as part of a four-run fourth inning.

The Jayhawks responded with three in the sixth before tying the game with a run in the seventh. Brett Vosik’s two-run double in the sixth cut K-State’s lead to a run at 11-10.

In K-State’s three-run 11th, Littlejim led off with a single and later scored on Ceballos’ single. Ceballos and Terrence Spurlin both scored on Phillips’ one-out double.

Thompson gave the Cats an early 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the first. In the bottom half, nine Jayhawk hitters came to the plate in a five-run frame. Metcalf and Sems each recorded RBI doubles as Kansas tallied four hits to go with two walks off K-State starter Will Brennan.

Senior Mitch Zubradt would pitch the next four innings in relief – a career high – with five strikeouts. Zubradt retired eight of nine over a stretch and finished with three earned runs on six hits.

KU starting pitcher Ryan Zeferjahn went on to put down eight of the next nine he faced after yielding a first-inning run. Thompson sparked a string of four straight hits with a leadoff single in the fourth, capped by Phillips’ three-run opposite field home run, bringing the Cats within a run.

Trailing 7-6 after five innings, K-State tagged Zeferjahn with five runs on four hits in the sixth. Brennan’s two-out, two-run double put the Wildcats ahead for the first time since the top of the first.

Zeferjahn ended with nine runs allowed (eight earned) on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Vosik led KU with four RBI while Skyler Messinger had a game-high four hits (4-for-6). The first seven Jayhawks in the order had multi-hit games.

K-State’s season ends at the Big 12 Baseball Championship for the first time since 2016.

“Our goal every year is to make the NCAA Tournament,” added Hughes. “It always has been and always will be as long as I am wearing this jersey right here. We will continue to work hard and try to fix our mistakes going into next year in order to work towards a championship.”

Mizzou drops SEC Tournament opener to Ole Miss 2-1

HOOVER, Ala. – No. 10 seed Mizzou Baseball (34-22-1) competed in yet another tightly-contested ballgame Tuesday at the Hoover Met, falling 2-1 to No. 7 seed Ole Miss. The Tigers jumped on top early with a single run in the second inning, but the Rebels responded with a pair in the home half of the fifth inning.

Both squads’ pitching staffs excelled Tuesday, allowing only three combined runs. Mizzou’s hurlers certainly gave the team a chance to win, but the offense struggled with timely hitting. The Tigers stranded two runners twice against the Rebels, including a pair in the top of the ninth inning to conclude the day.

#SHOWME TOP PERFORMERS VS. OLE MISS

  • Konnor Ash: 4.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 K
  • Ian Bedell: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R
  • Austin James: 1-for-3, 2B, RBI
  • Thomas Broyles: 2-for-4, R, 2B

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH STEVE BIESER

Opening statement…

“It was just a tough day for us obviously. We wanted to go win this game and get ourselves rolling in this tournament, but I’m really proud of this team on the way they’ve competed all season long. The way they will continue to compete.”

On Tuesday’s game and NCAA Tournament implications…

“Obviously we wanted to win today and that would’ve sealed it. This is a team that has played 10 Southeastern Conference series’. We’ve only lost four of those. I like our resume and I like this team. This is a team that is going to get healthy in the next week. We’re getting one of our starters back. Everything is rolling our way and we’d be very difficult in a regional. I feel like our resume is really solid. To keep this team out of a NCAA Regional would be a shame.”

#MIZ TAKEAWAYS

  • Tuesday marked the Tigers and Rebels’ first-ever meeting in the SEC Tournament.
  • Mizzou has played in close games all season long, evident by its 16 total one-run contests. That total is tied for the most among SEC teams, alongside LSU.
  • James has been an extra-base hit machine this year, knocking his sixth double Tuesday against Ole Miss. A whopping 10 of his 17 total hits this season have gone for extra bases.
  • With a double and single in his first two at bats, Broyles secured his fourth multi-hit game of the year. It was his first multi-hit effort since also collecting a pair of knocks on April 12 vs. No. 8 LSU.
  • Ash produced his 12th scoreless appearance of the year Tuesday, topping his seven outings with no runs allowed in his 2018 freshman campaign.
  • Bedell was dynamite again out of the bullpen, allowing zero runs for the 12th time this year as well.

UP NEXT
