Kansas coaching legends to reunite for 60th celebration

riggertKUKansas Athletics is pleased to announce an anniversary party unlike any other, celebrating 60 years of Jayhawk Basketball in Allen Fieldhouse. Coaching legends Ted Owens, Larry Brown, Roy Williams and current head coach Bill Self will reunite in Lawrence to pay homage to college basketball’s most storied building.

The four will join together on James Naismith Court the evening of Oct. 27 for “Celebrating 60 Years.” Ticket information will be released in early September. The renowned foursome, who combined have guided the Jayhawks over the last 50 years, will enjoy a night of reliving their favorite Allen Fieldhouse memories. KU Athletics and Self’s Assists Foundation are teaming up to provide a one of a kind evening, the proceeds of which will benefit charities designated by the four coaches.

“Only at Kansas do we get to celebrate a milestone such as this, bringing four living legends together to honor our history and our legacy,” Athletics Director Sheahon Zenger said.

2003-Present: Bill Self
Self is a remarkable 175-9 inside Allen Fieldhouse. As the three-time National Coach of the Year prepares for his 12th season at Kansas, he has more Big 12 titles (10) than losses (9) in the 60-year old basketball cathedral. His Jayhawks’ current streak of 10-straight regular season conference championships marks the third-longest run in NCAA history. With four 30-win seasons in the last five years, Self completed his first decade at Kansas with 300 wins, more victories than any other program in the same time frame. His 2008 team won the NCAA Championship.

“For 115 years, Kansas has been a standard of excellence for our sport,” Self said. “There aren’t very many places – if any – where you can invite back the last four coaches who have led the program for the last 51 years to celebrate an anniversary like this one. This is such a special place. Kansas Athletics has really made this a unique event, using the money to benefit the charities that mean a lot to each of us. I know the fans will enjoy it and I will be honored to be a part of it.”

1989-2003: Roy Williams
Williams is the second-winningest coach in Kansas history, behind the building’s namesake – Dr. Forrest “Phog” Allen. During Williams’ 15 years as a Jayhawk, Kansas made four trips to the NCAA Final Four and totaled a 418-101 record. He guided KU to nine conference titles and his 2002 team was the only in Big 12 Conference history to go 16-0. Williams returned to his alma mater, North Carolina, before the 2003-04 season and has gone on to reach 700 wins in fewer seasons than any coach in NCAA history. His 2005 and 2009 teams won the national championship.

“Sixty years in one phenomenal arena – wow! That has been the site of some unbelievable victories and accomplishments of one of the greatest home-court advantages in the history of college sports,” Williams said. “The tradition of Kansas basketball is a tradition of success and Allen Fieldhouse has been a great part of that. The Jayhawk faithful make it almost impossible for the opponents every night. Coaching in that arena is a real treat and I loved it. I’m ecstatic to be part of this anniversary celebration.”

1983-88: Larry Brown
A 40-year coaching veteran, Brown won more than 75 percent of his games at Kansas and led the Jayhawks to the NCAA Tournament in each of his five years. Named the Big Eight Coach of the Year in 1986, Brown and the Jayhawks went 35-4 that season on their way to the NCAA Final Four. Brown capped his career at Kansas with the 1988 NCAA National Championship. Brown accepted the head coaching position with the San Antonio Spurs following that season and spent the next 23 seasons in the NBA. In 2004, he led the Detroit Pistons to the NBA Championship, making him the only coach in history to win a title at the NCAA and NBA levels. In 2012, Brown returned to the collegiate ranks and is in his third season at SMU.

“The years I spent at Kansas were an incredible time in my life that I will always cherish,” Brown said. “The people I got to know, the players who were part of the program and the coaches who worked with me will always be a big part of my life. I am thrilled to be included in this celebration. I can’t imagine a place being more special than Allen Fieldhouse. It was such a great opportunity to coach in that environment. And coming back to KU with Bill Self as the head coach always makes me smile after having the opportunity to coach alongside him.”

1964-1983: Ted Owens
Owens spent 19 seasons leading the Jayhawks, the second-longest tenure of the program’s eight head coaches. A five-time Big Eight Coach of the Year, Owens’ 348 victories rank third all-time behind Allen and Williams. In Owens’ tenancy, Kansas won six Big Eight titles and advanced to NCAA Tournament play seven times, including Final Four appearances in 1971 and 1974. Owens is still an avid supporter of the program and released his authorial debut, At the Hang Up, in 2013.

“I am honored to be a part of the Kansas basketball family,” Owens said. “I really look forward to spending the time with these three men for whom I have the greatest respect. I also look forward to being back with our great Kansas fans.”

Missouri dismisses Torren Jones from basketball team

MUMissouri has parted ways with sophomore forward Torren Jones, according to an announcement from Tiger head coach Kim Anderson.

“We have high standards at the University of Missouri and after consulting with Mike Alden, I have made the decision to dismiss Torren Jones from our program,” Anderson said in a statement. “I am disappointed in Torren’s actions and want to be very clear about the culture of accountability we are building within our program. It’s a privilege to wear the University of Missouri uniform and we will represent our University and state with great integrity.”

The 6-foot-8 Jones came to Missouri from high-powered prep school La Lumiere (Ind.) and played in 30 games last year. Jones wasn’t a big impact last season, averaging 8.1 minutes per game and only scoring 63 points and grabbing 69 rebounds, but he would have given the Tigers some front court depth this season.

But with Jonathan Williams III and Ryan Rosburg returning after starting last season and senior Keanau Post returning, Missouri will still have a lot of experience returning in their front court. Freshmen Jakeenan Gant and D’Angelo Allen will also vie for minutes and likely receive more playing time now that Jones is moving elsewhere.

KU’s Admire leaves football program to focus on academics

KUKansas head football Charlie Weis announced Friday that junior offensive lineman Dylan Admire will forego his final two years of football eligibility to concentrate solely on his academics. Admire, an outstanding student, will be completing his bachelor’s degree in sport manageme-nt from KU in December and has intentions of immediately pursuing a career in strength and conditioning or nutrition at the collegiate level.

“I fully support Dylan’s decision,” said Weis. “He has been a model student-athlete and we wish him all the best.”

Admire, a native of Overland Park, Kansas, played in 16 games over the past two seasons, seeing time on both specials teams and the offensive line. He was a 2012 Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree and has been on the Athletic Director’s honor roll all seven of his semesters at Kansas.

”I am very proud of my time with the Kansas football program,” said Admire. “I am thankful for the opportunity I have had to be a part of the team and of the friendships I have gained throughout my years at KU. Right now I am focused on finishing my degree and moving on to a career either in strength and conditioning or nutrition in collegiate athletics. I look forward to supporting my teammates in Memorial Stadium this fall. Once a Jayhawk, always a Jayhawk.”

Benedictine picked third in preseason HAAC football poll

BenedictineAfter adding a little levity to the room on Tuesday, addressing a room full of fellow coaches, administrators, NAIA staff and media, Benedictine football head coach Larry Wilcox took his turn at the podium at the annual Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) Football Media Day held at the NAIA Headquarters in downtown Kansas City.

“Two of my favorite things in life are going to the dentist and media day,” Coach Wilcox stated before getting into his thoughts on the upcoming season.

The Ravens were selected third by the HAAC coaches in the annual HAAC Coaches’ Poll with 65 points. The two programs Benedictine shared the 2013 title with, Missouri Valley College and Baker University, were selected first and second respectively. Missouri Valley garnered six of the 10 first place votes with Baker getting the remaining four.

“The nucleas of our offense is going to be our offensive line,” Wilcox said. “We lost a lot of starters so the offensive line will not only have to be the core of our offense but really our entire team.”

Back for the Ravens on the offensive line are four starters in David Stochlin, Hayden Smith, Rory Mount and Dom Carroli. All four earned All-HAAC honors in 2013 with Stochlin also earning an All-America nomination from the Beyond Sports Network.

Benedictine replaces NAIA All-America selection Cameron Fore at running back, along with three-year starting quarterback Bill Noonan, running back Kevon McGrew and fullback Brad Lorang.

“We’re still not sure who the pieces are going to be but when we do find that out, those guys up front better be prepared,” Wilcox said.

Hayden Smith joined Coach Wilcox at the podium to address the crowd and echoed the same thoughts on the importance of the offensive line being prepared.

“There is a lot of pressure on us,” Smith said. “We’ve got to focus on our fundementals every play. We’re only going to be as good of a team as we are on the offensive line so we’ve got to be prepared.”

Peru State College was selected fourth with 56 points followed by MNU in fifth and Evangel University in sixth. Central Methodist University was selected seventh, followed by Avila University, Culver-Stockton College and Graceland University.

This season will be the final season for a 10-team conference as William Penn and Grandview University are set to join the HAAC for the 2015 season. Grandview recently won the 2013 NAIA National Championship, a fact that Coach Wilcox was honest about.

“I’ll be honest,” Coach Wilcox said. “I’ve got mixed emotions about the expansion. It’s going to make things a little tougher and more difficult and like everything else, we’re preparing for that as a staff.”

Benedictine opens the 2014 season the road Aug. 30 against Briar Cliff University in Vermillion, South Dakota, at the Dakota Dome. They open their home schedule on Sept. 13 against Ottawa University in the final year of the KCAC-HAAC Series.

K-State’s Mueller named to Hendricks Award watch list

KSUKansas State senior defensive end Ryan Mueller is one of 31 players nationally – including five from the Big 12 – to be named to the Ted Hendricks Award watch list, the award’s foundation announced Tuesday.

Mueller’s inclusion on the watch list is his fifth of the preseason as he was also named to the Bednarik Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Lott IMPACT Trophy and Rotary Lombardi Award watch lists. It also gave K-State its 18th watch list designation of the preseason.

A product of Leawood, Kansas, Mueller is up for the Ted Hendricks Award for a second time as he was on the midseason watch list a year ago. Meshak Williams was a candidate in 2012, while Ian Campbell was a semifinalist for the award in 2006 followed by a pair of watch list designations in 2007 and 2008.

Mueller, a captain for the 2014 season, tied the school record for sacks with 11.5 in 2013 to go along with 18.5 tackles for loss and 62 total tackles. The former walk-on earned Second Team All-America honors a year ago while he was also named the Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year.

The Ted Hendricks Award watch list will be adjusted as the 2014 season progresses and the foundation will announce a midseason watch list in late November. The winner of the 2014 Ted Hendricks Award will be announced on December 10.

Kansas State opens the 2014 season against Stephen F. Austin on August 30, at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The game, which kicks off at 6:10 p.m.
