Bishop LeBlond relieves Vertin of basketball coaching duties

Bishop LeBlond High School announced Tuesday that Steve Vertin will not return next year as boys’ basketball coach of the Eagles.

Vertin just finished his 13th season at LeBlond as they finished 9-15.

He had a career record of 198-126 and led the Eagles to three district championships, a Class 3 quarterfinal appearance in 2008 and a fourth-place finish in 2002.

Bishop LeBlond principal Solon Haynes released a statement Tuesday.  Haynes said, “We greatly appreciate coach Vertin’s commitment and dedication to the basketball program at Bishop LeBlond.”

Vertin missed 10 games this winter after having heart surgery in October, but came back after the first of the year and finished the season on the bench.

Vertin never had a team that finished below .500 until they went 5-19 during the 2009-2010 campaign, but now they’ve been under .500 for three consecutive seasons.
