Mustangs rally to defeat U.S. Military All-Stars 4-3 in 12 innings

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs snapped their three-game losing streak Monday night with 4-3 win over the U.S. Military All-Stars in 12 innings at Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team improves to 26-11 this season and they remain 18-11 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs scored single runs in the third and fourth innings, but the U.S. Military All-Stars tied the game with two runs in the fifth.

The game remained that way until the 11th inning when St. Joseph reliever Jonathan Lynch hit Ryan Robb with the bases loaded to give the All-Stars the lead.

The Mustangs were down to their final out in the bottom of the 11th when Brady Anderson singled, Davey Casciola walked and Jacob Richardson tied the game with a single to left field.

St. Joe then got a walk-off win in the 12th as Orencio Fisher was hit by the first pitch of the inning and then he scored after U.S. pitcher Bodacious Ball made an error on a comebacker hit by Kyle Uhrich.  Ball threw 11+ innings for the All-Stars as he threw 182 pitches.

Louis Mele and Tyler Cox led the Mustangs with two hits each, while Richardson, Cox and Brett Marr each had one RBI.

Jacob Hurst started and threw well as he allowed one earned run on seven hits in eight innings of work.  He struck out six and walked two batters.

The Mustangs are on the road Tuesday as they play a doubleheader against the Ozark Generals in Springfield.  The first pitch of game one is at 6:00 p.m.

Mustangs lose third straight as they fall at Clarinda Sunday

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs fell at Clarinda Sunday 9-8 as they’ve now lost a season-high three straight games.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team is now 25-11 this season and 18-11 in the MINK League.  The Mustangs are now tied with Sedalia for first place in the North Division and a half game ahead of Chillicothe.

St. Joseph raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning as they sent 10 men to the plate and seven different Mustangs had a base hit.  The lead would not last long as the A’s scored four runs in the second and added two more in the third inning.

The Mustangs regain the lead in the fifth inning with three runs, but Clarinda answered back again with two runs in the sixth to tie the game 8-8.

It remained that way until the ninth inning when St. Joe closer Steve D’Amico walked three consecutive batters to load the bases and then Travis Able hit a walk-off single.

Osvaldo Raya made his first start of the season for the Mustangs as he allowed six runs on five hits in four innings.  He struck out one but walked seven batters.  St. Joseph uses five different pitcers and they combined to walk 13 Clarinda A’s Sunday.

The Mustangs pounded out 16 hits as Brady Anderson finished 4-for-5 with two RBI.  Brett Marr added three hits, while Louis Mele and Jacob Richardson finished with two hits each.

St. Joseph is back on home Monday for a non-league game against the U.S. Military All-Stars.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ AM.

St. Joseph loses to Nevada 6-1, drops second straight at home

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs suffered their second consecutive loss as they fell at home Saturday night to Nevada 6-1.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team drops to 25-10 and 18-10 in the MINK League.  The Mustangs now have just a one game lead on both Chillicothe and Sedalia in the MINK League North Division.

St. Joseph fell behind 2-0 in the second inning and the game remained that way until the sixth.  The Mustangs got a lead off double from Orencio Fisher and Davey Casciola drove him in with a ground out to shortstop to make it a 2-1 game.

Nevada quickly grabbed momentum back in the top of the seventh inning as they scored two runs and then put the game away with two more in the ninth inning.  Three of six Griffon runs were unearned runs.

The Mustangs only had four hits against Nevada starter Doug Molzahn, who threw a complete game.  Other than Fisher’s double, St. Joe had singles from Jacob Richardson, Louis Mele and Matt Wollnik.

John Millan (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season despite throwing well.  He allowed just four hits and one earned run in six innings of work.

The Mustangs are on the road Sunday as they play at Clarinda.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. from Eberly Field.

Mustangs’ seven-game win streak ends with 5-4 loss to Chillicothe

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their seven-game win streak snapped Friday night as they lost to Chillicothe 5-4 inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team drops to 25-9 this season and 18-9 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs raced out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning, but the Mudcats came back with one in the third and two more runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead.

St. Joseph tied the game in the fifth and then Chillicothe scored two runs in the seventh inning and the Mustangs fell just short after pulling within one run in the eighth.

Evan McDonald, Davey Casciola and Kyle Uhrich each had two hits and one RBI for St. Joe, while Miles Kilgore (4-2) suffered the loss.  He went six innings and allowed five runs on the nine hits.

The Mustangs are at home again Saturday as they host Nevada at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.  The game will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ AM.

Mustangs’ McDonald earns MVP as North defeats South in MINK League All-Star Game

MINKASGThe MINK League All-Star game took place Thursday at Phil Welch Stadium in St. Joseph and the North All-Stars defeated the South 9-2.

The St. Joseph Mustangs had seven players on the North roster and shortstop Evan McDonald was named the MVP of the game as he finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.

The North squad broke open a scoreless game in the third inning with five runs. After the South scored one run in the sixth inning, the North put the game away with a four-run seventh inning.

Sedalia’s Robert Cummings and Chillicothe’s Ross McWhorter also had two RBI each for the North All-Stars.  St. Joseph players had a good night overall.  Brett Marr and Tyler Cox each had one hit and one run scored, while Brady Anderson had an RBI ground out.  Kyle Uhrich walked and scored one run.

On the mound the Mustangs’ John Millan threw a scoreless fourth inning, while Jake Purl allowed one run in the ninth inning.

J.C. Santos was the only South All-Star to have a mulit-hit game as he finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The St. Joseph Mustangs are back in action Friday as they host Chillicothe at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Mustangs’ game with Nevada suspended in the 10th due to darkness

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs blew a six-run lead Wednesday night against Nevada, but didn’t have a chance to make up for it and pull out a win as the game was suspended due to darkness.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team had a transformer blow earlier in the day so the lights at Phil Welch Stadium didn’t work.  The Mustangs moved up their game with the Griffons but because it went to extra innings they had to suspend the game in the top of the 10th inning with the game tied 9-9.  The game will start back up on July 20th when Nevada comes back to play St. Joseph.

The Mustangs fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning Wednesday, but answered right back with four runs of their own.  After the Griffons scored one in the second, St. Joe took control of the game with another four-run inning in the fourth and they added one more run in the seventh inning to take a 9-3 lead.

Nevada scored one in the eighth inning and then rallied to force extra innings with a five-run ninth.  The Griffons scored all five runs with two-outs in the ninth inning after a Louis Mele error at first base.  Mustangs’ reliever Jonathan Lynch retired the first two batters of the inning and then walked back-to-back batters before the error.  He gave up two hits and walked another batter as Nevada sent 10 men to the plate.

Mele had a big night at the plate as he went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.  Orencio Fisher and Davey Casciola added two hits each and Matt Wollnik drove in two runs.

Jason Blanchard started for St. Joseph as he went six innings and allowed three runs on six hits.

The Mustangs are off until Friday when they host Chillicothe.  The MINK League All-Star game will take place Thursday at Phil Welch Stadium.  The Home Run Derby begins at 5:15 p.m. and the game between the North and South All-Stars will begin around 7:15 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 AM.

St. Joseph extends win streak to seven with 4-2 victory at Chillicothe

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs extended their winning streak to seven games Tuesday night with a 4-2 victory at Chillicothe.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team improves to 25-8 this season and 18-8 in the MINK League.  With wins over Sedalia and Chillicothe in their last two games, the Mustangs now have a two game lead on Sedalia in the North Division and two and half games over Chillicothe.

St. Joseph struck first in the opening inning as Evan McDonald doubled to start the game and then scored on a Mudcat error.  Davey Casciola extended the lead to 2-0 with a sacrifice fly in the third inning before Chillicothe scored one run in the bottom of the third.

The Mustangs took a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning as they scored another run on a Chillicothe error and added one more on Casciola’s second sac fly.  The Mudcats scored one run in bottom of the fifth but that was as close as they’d get.

Michael Lydon-Lorson earned his second win of the season as he allowed just five hits and one earned run in seven innings of work.  He struck out seven and walked two.

Steve D’Amico picked up his second save in as many days as he worked a scoreless ninth inning.

McDonald led the St. Joe offense as he raised in MINK League leading batting average to .472 with a 3-for-5 night and two runs scored.  Brady Anderson added a pair of singles.

The Mustangs return home to Phil Welch Stadium Wednesday as they host Nevada at 7:00 p.m.

Uhrich’s eighth inning home run rallies St. Joseph past Sedalia

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs rallied for their sixth consecutive victory Monday night as they defeated Sedalia 10-9 inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team improves to 24-8 and they’re 17-8 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs played from behind the entire game as they never lead until the bottom of the eighth inning when Kyle Uhrich hit a two-run home run with two outs that put St. Joseph ahead 10-9.

Steve D’Amico came on to earn his third save of the season in the ninth inning as St. Joe now has its longest win streak of the season.

The Mustangs overcame three different three-run deficits Monday night as they fell behind 4-1 after two and a half innings, 5-2 after three and a half and 8-5 after four and a half innings.

Sedalia took an 9-8 lead as they scored an unearned run in the seventh inning and it stayed that way until Uhrich heroics in the eighth.

St. Joseph had 16 hits on the night as Uhrich finished 4-for-5 on the night with two runs and two RBI.  Louis Mele went 3-for-3 with two runs, Evan McDonald added three hits and five RBI and Brady Anderson also had three hits.

Drew Ferguson got the win in relief for the Mustangs as he threw 1.2 scoreless innings.  Logan Jacik made the start and struggled as he allowed eight runs on 12 hits in five innings of work.

The Mustangs are on the road Tuesday as they play at Chillicothe.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.

Six Mustangs selected to MINK League All-Star Game

MINKASGST. JOSEPH, Mo. The MINK League North Division leaders are sending six players to the 2nd annual All-Star game at Phil Welch Stadium on Thursday.

The Mustangs will be represented by catcher Brady Anderson, second baseman Brett Marr, shortstop Evan McDonald, designated hitter Kyle Uhrich and pitchers John Millan and Jake Purl in the MINK League All-Star game.  Also, third baseman Louis Mele will hit for St. Joseph in the home run derby.

Anderson, a junior at Valley City State University, is currently leading MINK North catchers with a .321 batting average. He’s also hit two home runs and driven in eight with eight stolen bases.

Marr gets the nod at second with a .279 average, two doubles, two triples and 10 RBI. He also drew a gamewinning walk against Chillicothe in a crucial league matchup on June 18.

Since Evan McDonald arrived in St. Joseph, he’s been on a tear with a .432 batting average, one home run, seven RBI and 11 stolen bases. McDonald’s biggest night came on July 1 against Clarinda when he posted a four-hit night including a two-run home run to start the game.

Uhrich’s leading the Mustangs with four home runs, including a performance on June 21 in Branson featuring two homers, and another on June 22. He’s batting .304 for the season and a team-high 26 RBI.

Millan’s been solid out of the bullpen throughout the summer, and posted two dominant starts as well. The El Paso, Texas native has a 4-0 record, a 0.33 ERA through 27 innings of work.

Purl’s also been dominant out of the bullpen in eight appearances with a 1.00 ERA, and he’s averaging more than one strikeout per inning.

Mele gets the nod in the home run derby for St. Joe after recording 10 extrabase hits and a .380 batting average leading into July 4. Mele’s hit one home run this summer, and he hit five last spring at NYIT.

The MINK League All-Star Game will be played on July 7 at 7pm at Phil Welch Stadium. Before the game, each MINK team will be represented in the second home run derby starting at 5:15pm.

Mustangs blow out Ban Johnson All-Star team 9-3

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs won their fifth consecutive game Sunday night as they defeated the Ban Johnson League All-Star team 9-3 inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team is now 23-8 as the five-game streak equals their longest of the season.

The Mustangs took an early lead against the Ban Johnson All-Stars as Jacob Richardson’s solo home run highlighted a two-run first inning.  St. Joseph added one run in the second and it remained that way until the sixth inning when the Mustangs broke the game open with five runs to take an 8-0 lead.

Both teams scored a single run in the seventh and the All-Stars added two unearned runs in the ninth inning.

Mustangs’ third baseman Davey Casciola had a big night as he finished 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs scored, two walks and two stolen bases.  Richardson added two RBI and Orencio Fisher went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

John Millan made his second start of the season for St. Joe and he improved to 4-0.  Millan went six innings and allowed no runs and only three hits.  He struck out four and walked four as his ERA this season is now at 0.36.

The Mustangs return to MINK League play Monday as they host Sedalia at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.  The game will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 AM.
