Mustangs’ game at Branson postponed after fourth inning

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs’ game against the Branson National in Bolivar Tuesday night was postponed after the fourth inning due to rain.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team was trailing 2-1 after four when the game went into a delay and they never resumed play.

Branson scored single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead before the Mustangs’ Orencio Fisher had an RBI single in the fourth inning.

Logan Jacik started for St. Joseph he allowed three hits and two runs in his four innings of work.

The Mustangs have had four games over the last week postponed due to rain.  They return home Wednesday night as they host Joplin at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joseph has seven-game win streak snapped by Sedalia

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs suffered their second loss of the season and had their seven-game win streak snapped as they fell at Sedalia Monday night 9-1.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 12-2 this season and 9-2 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs only had three hits on the night, but they got off to a good start as Orencio Fisher and Jacob Richardson led off the game with singles.  Fisher scored on a passed ball to make it 1-0, but St. Joseph only got one more hit the rest of the game.

Sedalia scored three runs in the second inning and added to its lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and four more in the seventh.

Richardson had the other Mustangs’ hit as he finished 2-for-4.

Mitch Steinhoff suffered the loss as he allowed four runs and four hits in five innings of work.  He walked five and struck out one.

The Mustangs are back on the road Tuesday as they play against Branson in Bolivar.  The first pitch is at 5:00 p.m.

Mustangs’ game at Nevada postponed Sunday night

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their game Sunday night at Nevada postponed due to wet field conditions and rain in the forecast.

There is no makeup date set at this time.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team had a relatively light week as they had three days off and two games were postponed.  The Mustangs’ game with Sedalia on Thursday was postponed in the bottom of the third inning.

St. Joseph’s schedule gets much more difficult now as they dont’ have another scheduled off day until Monday, June 29.  They’ll play 17 games in 14 days as they have three doubleheaders on their schedule.

The Mustangs are 12-1 this season and 9-1 in the MINK League and they are on the road Monday at Sedalia.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.

St. Joseph uses 15-run inning to blow out Mustang Alumni

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs won their seventh consecutive game Saturday night as they defeated a group of Mustangs Alumni players 16-8 inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 12-1 this.

The Alumni made it difficult early on for the Mustangs as they scored four runs in the third and fourth innings to take an 8-0 lead.

St. Joseph bounced right back in the bottom of the fourth as they set a franchise record with a 15-run inning.  The Mustangs sent 20 batters to the plate as they had nine hits and were also walked five times.

Jordan Powell had a big night for the Mustangs as he hit two home runs and drove in five runs.  He also walked two times.

Josh Cassidy added three hits, two RBI and two runs scored, while St. Joe natives Dillon Mattice and Patrick Dillon each with 2-for-4 with two runs scored.  Mattice drove in two runs and Dillon had one RBI.

Tanner Smith started and struggled for the Mustangs as he allowed seven hits and eight runs in 3.1 innings or work.

Blake Kolons earned the win in relief as he and three reliever combined to pitch 5.2 innings of shutout baseball.  Those four combined to allowed just two hits and no runs, while stricking out 12 and walking three.

The Alumni were led by Johnny Coy offensively as he went 2-for-5 with three RBI.  Joe Koerper had three hits and drove in one run, while Houston Slemp added two hits and two runs scored.

St. Joseph is back on the road Sunday as they play at Nevada.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.

Mustangs’ game with Sedalia postponed in third inning

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs returned home Thursday night against Sedalia, but rain forced the game to get postponed in the bottom of the third inning.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team was tied 2-2 with the Bombers as the Mustangs were batting with two outs and a runner on first base when the umpires took the teams off the field.

The game will be made up on Monday, July 13 and they will pick up from where they left off.

St. Joseph scored a run in the first inning as Ramsey Scott had an RBI single that drove in Tony Maselli, but Sedalia took their first lead with a two-out, two-RBI double by Jonothan Ramon.

The Mustangs evened the game in the bottom of the third as Scott Braren hit a sacrifice fly to score Jackson Schnurbusch.

Preston Felgate was on the mound for St. Joe and he allowed two runs on five hits in his three innings of work.

The Mustangs are 11-1 this season and 9-1 in the MINK League and they’re back in action Saturday when they play a game against a group of Mustang Alumni.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joseph wins sixth straight with road victory against Branson

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs picked up their sixth consecutive win Tuesday night as they defeated the Branson Nationals 9-5 at Bolivar.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 11-1 this season and 9-1 in the MINK League.

For the first time this summer the Mustangs didn’t score first in a game, but they came right back and scored at least one run in each inning from the second through the seventh innings.

St. Joseph pounded out 13 hits in the game as Scott Braren led the way with four hits, two runs and two RBI.  Kyle Richards went 3-for-4 two runs and he drove in one run.  Ramsey Scott also stayed hot as he finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two runs batted in.

Miles Gulley picked up the win on the mound as he went 5.0 innings and he allowed three runs on three hits.  Gully struck out four and walked five batters.

The Mustangs are off on Wednesday and then return home Thursday for a league game against Sedalia.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and it’ll be broadcast on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.

Former Mustang Tanner Lubach drafted in 9th round by Angels

Lincoln – Nebraska senior catcher and former St. Joseph Mustang Tanner Lubach was picked by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the ninth round of the 2015 MLB Draft on Tuesday, marking the 37th straight year a Husker has been drafted.

A Lincoln native, Lubach is the highest drafted Husker since 2011, when Cody Asche was selected in the fourth round by the Philadelphia Phillies. Lubach is the 26th Husker taken in the top-10 rounds since 2000 and of those 26 players, only seven had been drafted before coming to Nebraska.

Lubach spent the entire 2012 season with the Mustangs and hit .281 with two home runs and 29 RBI.  He also played in nine games late in the 2014 season and he hit .294 with no home runs and six RBI.

Named second-team All-Big Ten this season, Lubach finished second on the team with a career-best .312 batting average. He tied for the team lead in home runs with four, hit 10 doubles, one triple and was third on the team with 26 RBIs. Lubach was even better at the plate during Big Ten play with a .369 batting average, while starting 23 of NU’s 24 league games.

A Johnny Bench Award candidate each of the last two seasons, Lubach was one of the best defensive catchers in the Big Ten during his three seasons at Nebraska. Lubach finished his career second in Husker history in runners caught stealing with 44, just two behind Cory Burleson’s school record of 46. He posted a .993 career fielding percentage, with only six errors in 918 chances. In 138 career starts, Lubach allowed just 13 passed balls, including only two in 2015.

Mustangs use eight-run sixth inning to blow out Nevada Sunday

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs won their fifth consecutive game Sunday night at Nevada as they beat the Griffons 14-5 inside Lyons Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 10-1 this season and 8-1 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs broke open a 3-1 game with an eight-run sixth inning as St. Joseph sent 12 men to the plate and had seven hits in the inning.

Nevada never got closer than seven runs the rest of the way and Mustangs’ first baseman Ramsey Scott capped off the scoring when he hit a three-run home run with two outs in the ninth.

Scott finished 2-for-5 with five RBI and he was one of five Mustangs that had a multi-hit game.

St. Joseph’s Josh Cassidy went 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI, while Jacob Richardson and Scott Braren each had two hits, and Francisco Alvarez added two hits and two runs scored.

Dixon Marble (2-0) earned the win as he went 5.1 innings and allowed eight hits and four runs.  Only one run was earned as St. Joseph committed four errors on the night.

The Mustangs are off Monday and then travel to Branson for a MINK League game Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.

St. Joseph stays hot with 5-2 win over Joplin

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs won their fourth consecutive game Saturday night as they defeated Joplin 5-2 inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 9-1 this season and they’re 7-1 in the MINK League.

Trent Hill and Jacob Richardson had RBI singles in the first and third inning, respectively, to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.

That held up until the sixth when Joplin tied the game despite not getting a hit in the inning.  St. Joseph starter Mitch Steinhoff walked three, hit one batter and there was an error by Tony Maselli to account for the two runs.

The Outlaws had only one hit in the game, but had chances throughout the night as Mustang pitchers walked seven and hit two.

St. Joe answered right back in the bottom of the sixth inning as Francisco Alvarez had an RBI single and Evan McDonald drove in two runs on a fielder’s choice.

Ross Juliana earned the win in relief, while Steve D’Amico picked up his second save in as many nights.

The Mustangs are back on the road Sunday as they travel to Nevada.  The first pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. and it’ll be broadcast on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.

Mustangs sweep doubleheader against Branson Friday

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs returned to Phil Welch Stadium Friday night and swept a doubleheader from the Branson Nationals, 6-1 and 6-4.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team has now won three straight as they improve to 8-1 this season and 6-1 in the MINK League.

In game one, the Mustangs scored single runs in each of the first three innings and broke the game open with a three-run fourth.

Orencio Fisher and Jerry Houston had two hits each, while Fisher scored two runs.  Tony Maselli had a triple and drove in three runs and Ramsey Scott hit his first home run of the season.

Preston Felgate earned the win as he is now 2-0 this summer.  He went five innings and allowed just one hit and no runs.  Felgate struck out six and walked two, and he hasn’t allowed a run in two starts this season.

In game two, St. Joe jumped out to an other quick start as they scored five runs in the first inning.

Jacob Richardson, Evan McDonald and Josh Cassidy had two hits each, while McDonald scored twice and Cassidy had two RBI.

Trent Kinney picked up his first win of the season as he allowed three runs and three hit in four innings.  Steve D’Amico picked up his first save, allowing one unearned run in the seventh inning.

The Mustangs are back at home Saturday as they host Joplin inside Phil Welch Stadium.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.
