St. Joseph rallies to defeat Ban Johnson All-Stars in 13 innings

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs needed extra innings Thursday night but they were able to outlast the Ban Johnson League All-Stars 3-2 in 13 innings at Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team was scheduled to play the U.S.A. Military All-Stars but they had to cancel their tour due to health reasons, so the Ban Johnson League in Kansas City put together an All-Star team to battle the Mustangs.

St. Joseph had to rally twice Thursday night from one-run deficits as the Ban Johnson All-Stars scored single runs in the third and eighth innings.  But the Mustangs were able to bounce back in the bottom halves of those innings to tie the game before eventually scoring in the 13th when Lucas Powers drove in Nick Sebastian with a 2-out single.

Zac Johnson and Trent Hill added an RBI each for the Mustangs as they improve to 23-10 this summer.  Powers, Johnson and Joe Koerper led the way as they each had two hits.

Blake Kolons earned the win in relief for St. Joe as he went 5.1 innings.  He allowed just one hit and no runs, while striking out nine and not issuing a walk.

Dixon Marble made the start as he allowed two runs on six hits in 7.2 innings of work.

The Mustangs are at home for the 4th of July as they host Sedalia at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Gully, Mustangs blank Spooner to snap 2-game skid

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs got back in the win column Wednesday night after back-to-back losses as they shutout the Spooner (WI) Bandits 6-0 in a non-league game at Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team broke a scoreless tie in the third inning as they scored four runs on six hits.  Kyle Richards and Hayden Steele had RBI doubles in the innings, while Trent Hill and Zac Johnson each drove in one run with a single.

That was more than enough for Mustangs’ starter Miles Gully.  The lefty from Angelo State improves to 2-2 this season as he allowed just two hits over seven innings.  Gully struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter.

St. Joseph added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings as Francisco Alvarez and Jeremiah Figueroa drove in one run each.

Richards, Johnson and Brandon Huske led the Mustangs with two hits each as eight of the nine starters registered at least one base hit.

St. Joe improves to 22-10 and they’re back at home Thursday night for a matchup against an All-Star team from the Ban Johnson League in Kansas City.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Mustangs’ rally comes up short at Clarinda Monday

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs suffered their second straight road loss Monday night as they fell at Clarinda, 2-1.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team drops to 21-10 and 13-9 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs had a chance to tie or take the lead in the ninth inning as Joe Koerper led off the inning with a single and Mike Sherburne added a double to put runners on second and third with no outs, but Clarinda closer Jason McDonald got out of the jam for his third save.

McDonald struck out Brandon Huske, got Zac Johnson to ground out to third and then Josh Cassidy popped out to second base.

St. Joseph only had four hits in the game as they other two were singles by Koerper and Trent Hill with two outs in the first inning.

The only Mustang run came in the seventh as Sherburne reach third base on an error and scored on a Nick Sebastian sacrafice fly.

Brandon Baker (3-2) suffered the loss as he went 7.1 innings and allowed just two runs on seven hits.  He struck out six and walked three.

Clarinda scored single runs in the first and fifth innings.

The Mustangs have Tuesday off before returning to Phil Welch Stadium Wednesday for a game with the Spooner Bandits.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ & here on StJosephPost.com.

St. Joseph loses at Nevada Sunday 4-3

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their two game winning streak snapped Sunday as they lost at Nevada 4-3.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team drops to 21-9 and 13-8 in the MINK League, but they are now 0-3 against the Griffons.

The Mustangs fell behind 1-0 in the second inning before they scored an unearned run in the fourth to tie the game and then Joe Koerper drove in two runs with double to give St. Joseph the lead.

The Griffons tied the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and then they broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the eighth inning off of Mustangs’ starter Ryker Fox.

Fox (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season as he allowed four runs on eight hits over 7.2 innings.

Koerper was the only Mustang with multiple hits as he finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.  Brandon Husker and Ryan Abernathy each scored a run for the St. Joe.

The Mustangs will be on the road again Monday as the play at Clarinda.  The first pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 AM & here on StJosephPost.com.

Jones dominates again, Mutangs roll past Ozark 11-0

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs picked up their second consecutive win Friday night as they rolled to an 11-0 victory over the Ozark Generals inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 21-8 and 13-7 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs scored seven runs in the fourth inning Saturday to break open a scoreless game.

That was more than enough for St. Joseph starter Jake Jones.

Jones, who threw a seven-inning no-hitter last week, was dominate again as he went eight innings, allowing just three hits and striking out nine.

Joe Koerper led the Mustangs offense as he finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored.

Kyle Richards and Francisco Alvarez added two hits each, while Lucas Powers and Zac Johnson each scored two runs.

St. Joe is back on the road Sunday as they play at Nevada.  The first pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.

St. Joseph snaps 2-game skid with 2-0 win against North Kansas City

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs snapped a two-game losing streak Friday night with a 2-0 victory over North Kansas City in a non-league game at Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team had been shut out the previous two games and the offense struggled again against North Kansas City, but two runs was all they needed.

The Mustangs got a 2-out RBI single from Mike Sherburne in the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie and then St. Joseph scored an unearned run on an error by NKC second baseman Patrick Burns.

Sherburne, Joe Koerper and Zac Johnson were the only Mustangs to get a hit with one single each.

Jeremiah Figueroa picked up the win as he went six innings and allowed just four hits.  He struck out four and walked three.

Redmond Floyd, Jayme Lovelace and Grant Gavin threw one inning each of relief to hold off North Kansas City.

St. Joe improves to 20-8 this season and they’re back at home Saturday against the Ozark Generals.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and it’ll air on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.

Mustangs lose at Joplin, shutout for second straight game

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs were shutout for the second consecutive game Thursday night as they lost at Joplin, 4-0.

It’s the second time this season that St. Joe’s summer college baseball team has dropped back-to-back games as they are now 19-8 and 12-7 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs had just five hits in the game and advanced a runner past first base only twice against the Outlaws.

Joplin broke through in the third and fourth innings as they scored two runs in each inning off St. Joseph starter Trent Kinney.

Kinney lasted just 3.2 innings as he allowed four runs on eight hits.  Dixon Marble threw well in relief as he went the final 4.1 innings and gave up only two hits.

The Mustangs return home to Phil Welch Stadium Friday night for a non-league game against North Kansas City.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.

St. Joseph gets blanked by Kansas City Monarchs

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their four-game winning streak snapped Wednesday night as they were shutout by the Kansas City Monarchs, 3-0, in a non-league game at Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team struggled offensively Wednesday as they no baserunner reached second base until the ninth inning and that was the only frame they had multiple runners on base.

Andrew Standifer and Mike Sherburne had singles in the first inning, but the Mustangs didn’t get another hit until the seventh.

Sherburne had two of the five Mustang hits in the game.

The Monarchs offense didn’t do much either as they had just three hits.  But the biggest hit came from former Mustang Jordan Hurtt as he led off the sixth with a triple and scored on a Morgan Johann sacrifice fly.

Kansas City added two more in the eighth inning without getting a hit.  The Monarchs were able to draw two walks in the inning and St. Joe committed an error.  The Monarchs they scored one run on a passed ball and another on a wild pitch.

Mustangs’ starter Miles Gully (2-2) was the tough luck loser as he went 7.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits.  Gully struck out two and walked one.

St. Joseph is now 19-7 this season and they get back into MINK League play Thursday as they play at Joplin.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.

St. Joseph’s game with U.S. Military All-Stars canceled; will now play Ban Johnson All-Stars

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs opponent for the Thursday, July 3rd game, has been changed. Previously, the Mustangs were set to face the U.S. Military All-Stars, as this had been an annual event. Due to health reasons, the U.S. Military All-Stars have canceled their entire 2014 summer tour.

The Mustangs will play on July 3rd at 7 pm against the Ban Johnson All-Stars. All Veterans and Active Military will get in free for this event, as it will include a special pregame ceremony honoring three of St. Joseph’s local heroes. Also taking place during the pregame ceremonies, Falcon Skydiving will jump into the stadium, and the Mustangs will have a special presentation featuring a bald eagle. The night will end with a patriotic Heartland Health Fireworks Spectacular.

Mustangs General Manager Ky Turner said, “We’ve had a lot of fun going up against the U.S. Military All-Stars the past couple of years. However, I’m very excited for what we have planned for the entire night. We are very honored to honor some of our local heroes before the game, and I know the Ban Johnson All-Stars will give our team a very exciting match up. We have the best fireworks show in Mustangs history planned following the game.”

Mustangs hold off Clarinda for fourth straight win

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs stayed hot Sunday night as they picked up their fourth consecutive victory with a 5-4 win at Clarinda.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team has now won 13 of their last 16 games as they improve to 19-6 and 12-6 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs started quick Sunday night with three runs in the first inning as they had four consecutive two-out base hits.  Mike Sherburne had an RBI double and Zac Johnson added a two-run single.

St. Joseph added one more in the second inning on a Ryan Abernathy ground out and it stayed that way until the Mustangs took a 5-0 lead in the seventh with an unearned run.

Clarinda then rallied in the eighth inning off St. Joe reliever Reed Morton.  Morton walked the bases loaded and the A’s scored two runs on an error by Joe Koerper.  They added two more runs on a Danny Matienzo two-run single before Austin Aspregren got two fly balls to right field and Clarinda left two men on base.

Brett Ash earned his 10th save in ten tries as he struck out two and walked one batter in the ninth inning to preserve the win for the Mustangs.

St. Joseph starter Brandon Baker improves to 3-1 with the win as he threw seven scoreless innings, allowing just six hits and striking out seven.

Abernathy and Sherburne each had two hits to lead the Mustangs nine-hit attack.

St. Joe is off until Wednesday when they return to Phil Welch Stadium for a non-league game with the Kansas City Monarchs.  First pitch is at 7:00 p.m.
