St. Joseph’s win streak ends with walk-off loss at Chillicothe

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their five-game win streak snapped Sunday night as they lost at Chillicothe 3-2.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team falls to 13-9 and 9-9 in the MINK League.

Chillicothe centerfielder Trevor Jones hit a two-out RBI single in the ninth inning off Mustang reliever Trey Gonsalez to break a 2-2 tie and win it for the Mudcats.

St. Joseph jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Lucas Powers hit a two-out RBI single, but Chillicothe answered rigth back with two runs to take the lead in the bottom half of the second.

The Mustangs tied the game in the fourth inning when Brandon Huske drove in Connor Foreman with a single, but St. Joe left the bases loaded.

They left the bases full twice in the game and also had a first-and-third, one-out situtation in the eight inning where St. Joseph failed to scored.

Foreman and Griff Gordon led the Mustangs with two hits each.

Colton Howell made his first start of the summer for St. Joe and he lasted sixth inning.  Howell gave up two runs and three hits, while walking five and striking out four.

The Mustangs are off until Thursday when they return home to host Joplin at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Baker, Mustangs blank Sedalia for fifth straight victory

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs extended their win streak to five games Saturday night at Phil Welch Stadium with an 8-0 shutout of the Sedalia Bombers.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 13-8 this season and they’re 9-8 in MINK league play.

Mustangs’ starter Aaron Baker earned the win as he went eight inning and allowed just seven hits.  Baker struck out 10 and walked two as he is now 3-1 and lowers his season ERA to 0.58.

St. Joseph got on the board in the fourth inning with a sacrafice fly from Griff Gordon and they didn’t get their first hit until the fifth.

The Mustangs broke the game open with a two-run sixth, three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth inning.

Gordon led the way with two hits and three RBI, while Zac Johnson drove in two runs.

St. Joe is on the road Sunday as they play at Chillicothe.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and can be heard on 680 KFEQ and here on stjosephpost.com.

St. Joe extends win streak to four with 6-4 win over Omaha

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs used a four-run eighth inning to rally past Omaha Friday night at Phil Welch Stadium and they defeated the Diamond Spirit 6-4.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team has now won a season-high four straight games as they improve to 12-8 and 8-8 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs fell behind early 3-0 and were down 4-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth inning.

St. Joseph had one runner on with two outs when the rally began for the Mustangs.  Omaha make things easier for St. Joe as they committed four errors in the inning and St. Joseph scored four runs with two outs and three were unearned.

Connor Foreman and Payton Scarbrough each had an RBI in the inning.

Jarrod Miller recorded the final out of the eighth inning to get the win, while Ethan Appleby picked up his third save as he worked a scoreless ninth.

Dixon Marble made the start and he last 7.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and four runs.  He struck out three and didn’t walk a batter.

Foreman, Scarbrough, Griff Gordon and Eric Swain had two hits each to lead the 11-hit attack for the Mustangs.

St. Joseph is back in action Saturday as they host Sedalia at 7:00 p.m.  The game will be broadcast live on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.

Mustangs get walk-off win in the 11th as they rally past Rossville

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs won their third straight game Thursday night as they rallied past Rossville in a non-league game and defeated the Rattlers, 5-4, in 11 innings.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 11-8 and they remain 7-8 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs’ Jeremy Monty hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning as St. Joseph scored two runs after Rossville took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 11th.

Benton graduate Lucas Powers hit a one-out single to start the rally and eventually scored on a sacrafice fly by Kyle Richards and that set up the game winner for Monty with two outs.

It was Monty’s first RBI of the summer.

St. Joe rallied from a 2-0 deficit as Eric Swain drove in a run in the fourth inning, Kris Koerper had an RBI single in the seventh and the Mustangs took the lead in the eighth with another RBI single from Koerper.

Rossville tied the game in the ninth inning as Kyle Simpson made a throwing error that allowed a run to score.

Jace Anderson earned the win in relief as he went three innings and allowed three hits and one earned run.

Jared Hawkins started for St. Joseph and lasted five innings.  He gave up two runs on five hits, while striking out five batters.

Koerper and Griff Gordon led the Mustangs with two hits each.

St. Joe is back in action Friday as they host Omaha at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joseph crushes the Kansas City Monarchs, 16-2

riggertMustangsAfter a two-day layoff the St. Joseph Mustangs returned to Phil Welch Stadium Wednesday night and crushed the Kansas City Monarchs, 16-2, in a non-league game.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improve to 10-8 this season and they remain 7-8 in MINK League play.

The Mustangs fell behind 1-0 in the first inning, but then scored 16 unanswered runs.

St. Joseph used an eight run third inning to take the lead and they added three more runs in the fifth and five in the sixth inning.

Zac Johnson hit a two-run home run and finished with three hits.  He drove in three runs and stole home in the third inning.

Kris Koerper added a three-run home run in the game as all nine positions players for the Mustangs had at least one hit.

Jonathan McCann picked up his first win of the season as he went six innings and allowed one run on six hits.

St. Joe is back at Phil Welch Stadium Thursday night as they host Rossville in another non-league game at 7:00 PM.  The game will air live on 680 KFEQ and here on stjosephpost.com.

Mustangs snap three-game skid with extra inning win at Nevada

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs snapped a three-game losing streak Sunday night as they rallied to win at Nevada, 9-7, in 10 innings.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 9-8 this season and 7-8 in the MINK League.

Joe Koerper had a big night for the Mustangs as he helped St. Joseph get off to a quick start with an RBI single in a three-run first inning and then he provided some heroics late.

With St. Joe trailing 7-6 in the ninth inning, Koerper hit a double to drive in pinch runner Jeremy Monty to tie the game and send it to extra innings.

In the 10th, Zac Johnson got on base with a one-out single and eventually scored on an error by the catcher.  Koerper added some insurance with an RBI single that drove in Kyle Simpson.

Koerper finished 3-for-5 with three RBI, while Simpson went 4-for-5 with one run batter in and three runs scored.

Johnson and Kris Koerper added three hits each as the Mustangs pounded out 16 in the win.

Brandon Simmons made the start for St. Joseph as he went 6.1 innings and allowed three earned runs and 11 hits.

Trey Gonsalez earned the win in relief, while Ethan Appleby picked up his second save with a perfect 10th inning.

The Mustangs now have two days off as they return to action Wednesday for a non-league game at Phil Welch Stadium against the Kansas City Monarchs.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs win exhibition game against Missouri Western alumni, 5-1

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs got back in the win column Saturday night as they played an exhibition game against the Missouri Wetsern alumni and won 5-1 in a rain shortened game.

The game was called in the bottom of the eighth inning because of rain.

The win won’t count in the standings for St. Joe’s summer college baseball team, but it was much needed after three straight losses.

The Mustangs got on the board quickly as Joe Koerper hit a three-run home run in the first innings and then Kyle Richards hit a two-run home run in the third.

That was all Stanten Jones would need on the mound as St. Joe’s starter went eight innings and allowed one run on six hits.  He struck out 10 and didn’t walk a batter.

Koerper and Zac Johnson each had two hits to lead the Mustangs’ nine-hit attack.

St. Joseph (8-8, 6-8 MINK) is back into league play Sunday as they travel to Nevada for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch.

Mustangs drop season-high third straight as they lose to Nevada

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs lost to Nevada Friday night, 7-4, as St. Joe’s summer college baseball team has dropped three straight games for the first time this season.

The Mustangs fell behind 2-0 after four innings, but St. Joe got one run back in the sixth when Kyle Simpson scored on a double steal to make it 2-1.

The game stayed that way until the ninth inning when Nevada finally got to Mustangs’ starter Aaron Baker.

The Griffons scored five unearned runs to extend their lead to 7-1.

St. Joseph finally broke through in the bottom of the ninth with three runs, but they fell short and dropped to 8-8 on the season and 6-8 in the MINK League.

Baker threw a complete game and allowed nine hits and two earned runs.  He struck out five and didn’t walk a batter as he is now 2-1 this summer.

Connor Foreman drove in two of the four Mustangs’ runs.  Eric Swain and Kyle Richards had two hits each to lead St. Joe.

The Mustangs will play an exhibition game Saturday as they host the Missouri Western Alumni at Phil Welch Stadium.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and can be heard on 680 KFEQ and 680KFEQ.com

St. Joseph loses second straight as they fall at home to Clarinda

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs lost their second consecutive game Thursday night as they fell at home to Clarinda, 10-8.

It’s the third time this season that St. Joe’s summer college baseball team has dropped back-to-back games as they are now 8-7 this season and 6-7 in the MINK League.

Clarinda broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning with three runs and then took a 6-2 lead in the sixth inning before the Mustangs made their comeback.

Kris Koerper hit a sacrafice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it a 6-3 game and then Zac Johnson hit a two-out, three-run home run in the seventh to tie the game.

The A’s then used a two-out rally in the eighth inning to regain the lead as they scored four two out runs to take a 10-6 advantage.

St. Joe got an RBI ground out in the eighth by Shane O’Connell and a solo home run from Eric Swain in the ninth inning, but Koerper flew out to left field with two runners on base to end the game.

Johnson led the Mustangs offense as he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.  Koerper had two sac flys and Swain drove in two and scored twice.

Jared Hawkins started for St. Joseph and went 5.1 innings.  He allowed six runs on 10 hits and struck out two.

Trey Gonsalez suffered the loss in relief as he gave up two runs on two hits in 2.1 innings of work.

Clarinda improves to 8-1 with the win and 6-1 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs are back at home Friday as they entertain Nevada for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch.

St. Joseph drops 9-2 game to Chillicothe Wednesday

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs returned home Wednesday night after a three-game road trip and struggled against Chillicothe as they suffered a 9-2 loss to the Mudcats.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team drops to 8-6 this season and 6-6 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning after an RBI single by Payton Scarbrough, but Chillicothe scored three two-out runs in the next two innings to take a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, St. Joseph DH Kris Koerper hit a solo home run to make it 3-2, but the Mudcats broke the game open with a six-run sixth inning and went on to the 9-2 win.

Simpson, Emilio Villanueva and Jeremy Monty had two hits each for the Mustangs.

St. Joe starter Dixon Marble fell to 2-1 this season as he went five innings and allowed seven hits and six runs.  He struck out five and walked three.

The Mustangs are back at home Thursday as they host Clarinda inside Phil Welch Stadium at 7:00 p.m.  The game will air live on ESPN 1550 AM and www.1550espn.com.
