Mustangs rally past Joplin to win series finale

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs wrapped up their three-game series at Joplin Tuesday night with an 8-5 victory over the Outlaws.

It’s the second straight win for St. Joe’s summer college baseball team as they took two-of-three from Joplin and are 4-2 against the Outlaws this season.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and led 4-1 after two, but Joplin tied the game with three runs in the third inning and they took the lead 5-4 after five.

St. Joseph regained the lead for good in the seventh inning as Kris Koerper had an RBI single and Kyle Simpson drove in a run with a ground out.

The Mustangs added two insurance runs in the eighth inning as Emilio Villanueva and Connor Foreman drove in one run each.

Foreman finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Simpson drove in three runs.

St. Joe’s Redmond Floyd picked up his first win of the summer has he went six innings and allowed five runs on three hits.  He struck out three and walked three batters.

Jace Anderson earned the save as he threw three scoreless innings of relief.  Anderson gave up just one run and he struck out five.

The Mustangs improve to 8-5 this season and 6-5 in the MINK League.

St. Joseph returns home Wednesday to host Chillicothe at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.  The game will air live on 680 KFEQ and 680KFEQ.com.

St. Joseph splits doubleheader at Joplin

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs split a doubleheader Monday night at Joplin as they lost game one, 13-3, and came back to win game two, 10-7.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 7-5 this season and 5-5 in the MINK League.

In game one, the Mustangs scored the first inning, but Joplin answered right back as they scored five in the second inning and four more in the third off of St. Joseph starter Jonathan McCann.

McCann suffered his first loss of the summer as he lasted just 2.2 innings and allowed nine runs on nine hits.

Kris Koeper led the Mustangs with three hits and an RBI, while Payton Scarbrough and Kyle Richard each went 2-for-4.

In game two, St. Joseph scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to grab a 6-4 lead, but Joplin answered right back with three of their own and grab a 7-6 lead after six.

The game was a seven inning game so the Mustangs were down to their final three outs, but Keegan Smith led off with a single, Shane O’Connell was hit by a pitch and Emilio Villanueva walked to load the bases.  Michael Schulze was 0-for-4 as he came to the plate, but he hit his first career gland slam and his second home run of the season to put St. Joe back in front.

Ethan Appleby came on and struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to earn the save.

Zac Johnson, Kris Koerper, Kyle Simpson and Keegan Smith all had two hits for the Mustangs, while Johnson and Villanueva scored two runs each.

The Mustangs and Outlaws play again Tuesday night in Joplin as the first pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs’ doubleheader at Clarinda postponed Sunday

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their doubleheader at Clarinda postponed Sunday night because of rain in Iowa.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team will make the games up against the A’s on July 8 and July 15 in Clarinda.

The Mustangs are 6-4 this season and 4-4 in the MINK League.

St. Joseph is back on the road for a three-game series at Joplin.  The two teams just wrapped up a three-game series at Phil Welch Stadium Friday and Saturday as the Mustangs won two of the three games.

St. Joe and Joplin will play a doubleheader Monday night beginning at 5:00 p.m. and play a single game Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.

St. Joseph’s winning streak snapped Saturday by Joplin

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their three-game winning streak snapped Saturday night as they lost at home to the Joplin Outlaws, 9-8.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team jumped out to a 5-1 lead after four innings, but Joplin scored three runs in the fifth and five in the sixth inning to take the lead for good.

The Mustangs rallied for two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh inning, but fell one-run short.

Michael Schulze and Joe Koerper led the offense as they both went 4-for-5 with one RBI.  Schulze scored three runs and Koeper scored twice.

Jeremy Monty was the only other Mustang with a mulit-hit game as he finished 2-for-5.

Jace Anderson suffered the loss in relief for St. Joseph.  Anderson failed to retire a batter in the sixth inning as he allowed four runs on two hits and two walks.

Stanton Jones made the start and lasted five innings.  He gave up five runs on eight hits, while stricking out four and walking two.

The Mustangs fall to 6-4 this season and 4-4 in the MINK League.

St. Joe returns to the road Sunday as they play a doubleheader at Clarinda starting at 6:00 p.m.  Both games can be heard on 680 KFEQ and 680KFEQ.com.

Mustangs sweep doubleheader from Joplin with two shutouts

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs swept Joplin Friday night in a doubleheader at Phil Welch Stadium as St. Joe’s summer college baseball team shutout the Outlaws both games, 16-0 and 4-0.

In game one, the Mustangs scored all 16 runs in the first four innings, including eight in the fourth.

Michael Schulze finished 2-for-4 with four RBI, while Kris Koerper homered and drove in three, and Lucas Powers also had three RBI.  Grank Fink went 3-for-3 and he scored three runs.

St. Joseph starter Aaron Baker threw a complete game Friday as he allowed just four hits.  Baker struck out six and walked just one as he improves to 2-0 this summer.

In game two, Koerper broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with a two RBI double and he added a run scoring single in the fifth inning.  Grant Fink had the other RBI with a bases loaded walk in the fifth.

Jerad Hawkins also threw a complete game in his first start of the season.  He struck out four, didn’t walk a batter and Hakwins allowed only five hits.

The Mustangs have won three straight and are now 6-3 this season and they’re 4-3 in the MINK League.

St. Joe will play Joplin again Saturday as they host the Outlaws at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joseph rolls to 11-1 victory over North Kansas City

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs snapped their two-game losing streak Thursday night with an 11-1 non-league victory over North Kansas City inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 4-3 this season.

The Mustangs scored all 11 runs in the first four innings and broke the game open with a six-run third inning.

Kyle Simpson, Kris Koerper, Zac Johnson and Kyle Richards had two hits each, while Johnson and Emilio Villanueava drove in two runs a piece.

Koeper hit his first home run of the season in the fourth inning.

Dixon Marble made his first start of the season for St. Joseph and he earned his first win by going eight innings and allowing just one run on seven hits.  Marble struck out three and didn’t walk a batter.

The Mustangs are back at home Friday night for a doubleheader with Joplin.  The first pitch of game one is at 6:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Mustangs’ game at Clarinda postponed Wednesday

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their game at Clarinda postponed Wednesday night because of rain.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team will make the game up this Sunday.  The two teams were scheduled to play that day and now they’ll play a doubleheader beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The Mustangs are 3-3 and 2-3 in MINK League play after losing back-to-back games to Ozark and Omaha on the road.

St. Joseph returns home Thursday for a non-league game against North Kansas City.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joseph drops second straight as they lose 2-1 at Omaha

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs suffered their second consecutive loss as they fell on the road at Omaha Tuesday night, 2-1.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 3-3 this season and 2-3 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs offense struggled as the only run they scored came in the second inning when Shane Segovia scored on a wild pitch.

St. Joseph had only seven hits, all singles, and left ten runners on base. No Mustang had more than one hit in the game.

St. Joe starter Redmond Floyd suffered the loss as he went six innings and allowed just two hits and two runs.  Floyd struck out eight batters, but he also walked seven.

Jarrod Miller and Blake Kolons threw well out of the bullpen as they combined for two scoreless innings and allowed just one hit.

The Mustangs close out their five-game road trip Wednesday night as they play at Clarinda.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs split doubleheader at Ozark Monday

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs split a doubleheader in Springfield Monday night as they defeated Ozark in game one, 7-3, before falling in the nightcap, 6-3.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 3-2 and 2-2 in the MINK League.

In game one, the Mustangs jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as Michael Schulze led the game off with a home run before the Generals took the lead with two runs in the third.

St. Joseph regained the lead in the fourth inning as Grant Fink hit a solo home run and Payton Scarbrough drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Ozark tied the game in the bottom of the fourth and the two teams stayed that way until the ninth inning.

The Generals fell apart in the ninth defensively as they committed four errors and St. Joe scored four unearned runs.

Shane Segovia had three hits to lead the Mustangs, while Schulze and Fink added two hits each.

Trey Gonsalez earned the win in relief as he threw 3.1 scoreless innings and allowed just one hit.  Jonathan McCann started the game and gave up three runs and seven hits in 5.2 innings pitched.

In game two, St. Joseph starter Patrick Brady took the loss as he struggled and allowed six runs and seven hits in just 2.2 innings of work.

Jace Anderson kept the Mustangs in the game with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.  He allowed just three hits and struck out six batters.

St. Joe scored single runs in the first, second and fifth innings, but had only six hits in the nightcap.

Shane Segovia, Eric Swain and Kyle Simpson drove in one run each.

The Mustangs continue their five-game road trip Tuesday as they travel to Omaha for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch with the Diamond Spirit.

Mustangs suffer first loss of season at Nevada

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs suffered their first loss of the season Sunday night as they were fell at Nevada, 5-4.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team drops to 2-1 this season and 1-1 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI ground out by Michael Schulze, but the Griffons answered back with two runs off St. Joseph starter Stanton Jones in the bottom of the third and they would never trail again.

St. Joe did tie the game 2-2 in the fifth as Schulze scored on a wild pitch, but Nevada answered right back in the bottom of the fith and they scored three runs.

The Mustangs got one run back in the seventh on an RBI groundout from Kyle Simpson and then Payton Scarbrough hit a solo home run in the ninth inning, but St. Joe’s rally fell short.

Schulze finished with two of the Mustangs five hits, while Simpson, Scarbrough and Keegan Smith each had one.

Jones suffered the loss for St. Joseph as he lasted just 4.1 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits.  He struck out eight, while walking three batters.

Jerad Hawkins kept the Mustangs in the game as he three 3.2 scoreless innings of relief and he gave up just two hits.

St. Joe is back on the road Monday as they play a doubleheader at Ozark beginning at 5:00 p.m.
