Mustangs fall apart late in loss to Omaha

The St. Joseph Mustangs gave up two unearned runs in the ninth inning Wednesday against Omaha and they lost to the Diamond Spirit, 5-3.

On Tuesday, St. Joe scored on a sac fly by Spiker Helms to break a 2-2 tie and win in Omaha, but the Diamond Spirit turned the tables at Phil Welch Stadium as they broke a 3-3 tie in the ninth.

Helms and Patrick Burkhart both committed errors in the ninth inning and that spoiled the debut of relief pitch Jordan Clark.  Clark made his first appearance in a Mustang uniform and took the loss as he struck out two and allowed just two hits.

Cody Cunningham started the game for St. Joseph and went 6.1 innings.  He allowed seven hits and three runs, while striking out six and walking just one.

Mustang 3B Brent Siefert led the way offensively as he finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and Burkhart added two hits.

Both teams scored one run in the fourth inning and both added two runs in the seventh before Omaha won the game in the ninth inning.

St. Joseph drops to 14-3 this season and 11-3 in the MINK League.  They’ll play a non-league game Thursday night at Phil Welch Stadium against Mac-N-Seitz.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and can be heard on 680 KFEQ.

Mustangs score in ninth to win at Omaha

The St. Joseph Mustangs won their fourth consecutive game Tuesday afternoon as they scored a run in the top of the ninth inning to beat the Omaha Diamond Spirit, 3-2.

Cameron Bentley walked to lead off the ninth inning, advanced to second and to third on passed balls, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Spiker Helms.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 14-2 this season and 11-2 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs took the lead in the second inning as Will Mulligan had an RBI single and Jake Kretzer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Omaha rallied to tie the game with two two-out doubles in the fourth inning off St. Joseph starter Andrew Polly.

Both Polly and Omaha Starter Ben Heairet lasted six innings and the bullpens put zeros on the board until the Mustangs broke the tie in the ninth.

Polly allowed seven runs and he struck out one in his six innings of work.  Ryan Price, Mark Robinette and Doug Shields each pitched one scoreless inning of relief as Robinette earned the win and Shields the save.

Brock Chaffin finished the game 2-for-5 as St. Joe scattered only six hits on the afternoon.

The Mustangs return home Wednesday night as they entertain Omaha at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Mustangs beat Chillicothe for third straight win

The St. Joseph Mustangs won their third consecutive game Sunday night as they went to Chillicothe and defeated the Mudcats, 7-2.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 13-2 this season and 10-2 in the MINK League.

Just like the previous two games, the Mustangs struck early as the first four batters reached base and St. Joseph led 2-0 after the first innings on RBI base hits by Spiker Helms and Brent Seifert.

Chillicothe closed to within one run two different times as they trailed 2-1 after three innings and 3-2 after six, but St. Joe broke it open in the seventh inning Sunday.

The Mustangs scored three runs in the seventh to get separation from the Mudcats, capped off by a two-out RBI double from Kris Koerper and a two-out RBI single by Jordan Guida.

Cameron Bentley jump started the St. Joseph offense for the second straight night.  The Kansas City native went 4-for-4 with two runs scored in first first game with the team Saturday.  Then Sunday, he finished 4-for-5 with three runs and two stolen bases.

Spiker Helms added a triple and two RBI, while Guida had two base hits and drove in one run.

Cody Lane earned the win on the mound as he improves to 2-0 this summer.  He allowed just two runs on six hits in six innings of work.  Lane struck out three and walked three.

The Mustangs have a day off Monday and then travel to Omaha on Tuesday for a doubleheader that begins at 2:00 p.m.

Mustangs return home and get revenge vs. Nevada

The St. Joseph Mustangs avenged two earlier losses this week to Nevada as they returned to Phil Welch Stadium Saturday night and beat the Griffons, 8-3.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings and then broke open a 4-2 game with a three-run eighth inning.

Cameron Bentley made his Mustang debut Saturday night and the Arkansas-Little Rock product went 4-for-4 with two runs scored.  Brock Chaffin added three hits and an RBI as St. Joseph finished with 12 hits against Nevada.

Northwest Missouri State graduate Jayson Huett earned the win as he went 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits.  He also struck out six and walked just one.

St. Joseph improves to 12-2 this season and 9-2 in the MINK League.  They’re back on the road Sunday at Chillicothe.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and you can hear the game on ESPN 1550.

Mustangs bounce back again to defeat Sedalia

For the second time this week, the St. Joseph Mustangs bounced back from a loss at Nevada by going back on the road and defeating a MINK League team convincingly.

Friday, St. Joe’s summer college baseball team took down the defending South Division Champion Sedalia, 5-1.

The Mustangs grabbed an early lead with two runs in the first inning and they added three more in the fourth.

That was more than enough offense for starting pitcher Adam Maddox as he allowed just one run on four hits in six innings of work.  It was the first start of the season for the Mustangs’ Pitcher of the Year in 2010.

St. Joseph had seven different players with one hit each.  Spiker Helms led the way with three RBI and one runs scored, while Mark Robinette drove in a run as well.

The Mustangs improve to 11-2 this season and 8-2 in the MINK League.  They return home Saturday night as they entertain Nevada inside Phil Welch Stadium.  The first pitch is schedule for 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs lose second straight at Nevada

The St. Joseph Mustangs lost for the second time in three games Thursday as they fell at Nevada, 8-1.  Both losses were in Nevada as St. Joe’s summer college baseball team falls to 10-2 and 7-2 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs fell behind 1-0 after the first inning and then the Griffons added five more in the third, including three unearned runs after an error on St. Joe first baseman Kris Koerper.

St. Joseph didn’t get its first hit until a Spiker Helms single in the fourth inning and only had two hits against Nevada starter Steve Kuligowski during his six innings of work.

The only run for the Mustangs came in the seventh when Koerper his a solo home run, his third of the season.

St. Joe was outhit 11-5 in the game and eight runs was the most allowed this season.

Kyle Jackson (1-1) took the loss as he made his second start of the season.  He went five innings and allowed seven hits and three earned runs, while striking out five and walking two.

Mustangs’ manager Matt Johnson, pitching coach Matt Wilson, DH Brock Chaffin and 2B Patrick Burkhart were all ejected Tuesday night after arguing balls and strike with the home plate umpire.  Johnson and Chaffin were thrown out in the eighth inning, while Wilson and Burkhart were tossed in the ninth.

St. Joseph is back on the road Friday night as they play at Sedalia.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs bounce back with win at Joplin

The St. Joseph Mustangs bounced back from their first loss of the season Tuesday with a 10-3 win at Joplin Wednesday night.

There were no statistics available but St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 10-1 this season and 7-1 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs are back on the road Thursday at Nevada.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and you can hear the game live on 680 KFEQ.

Mustangs fall to Nevada for first loss of season

The St. Joseph Mustangs suffered their first loss of the season Tuesday night as they fell at Nevada, 6-5.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team gave up three runs in the first innings and two more in the third innings before finally scoring two runs in the fifth.

The Mustangs trailed 6-2 entering the ninth inning and scratched across three runs but fell just short.

St. Joseph drops to 9-1 this season and 6-1 in the MINK League.

Benton graduate Jake Kretzer hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning and Central grad Landinn Eckhardt drove in three runs to lead the Mustangs offense. Jordan Guida added two hits.

Andrew Polly suffered the loss as he drops to 1-1. He allowed four earned runs in six innings of work while striking out two and walking one.

St. Joe is back on the road Wednesday as they play at Joplin. The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.
