Low oxygen smothers fish at Branson trout hatchery

branson fish hatcherySPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A large fish kill has been reported a southwest Missouri hatchery.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that foul-smelling water coming out of Table Rock Lake dam killed scores of trout at the Shepherd of the Hills Hatchery. The state conservation department says the fish kill can be traced to heavy rains, hot weather and an algae die-off that depleted water quality.

The hatchery is located near the base of the dam and is Missouri’s largest trout hatchery, producing 1.25 million fish a year. Most of the fish are stocked into Lake Taneycomo downstream from the hatchery.

Hatchery officials are working to determine how many fish died.

Hatchery staff members have been moving some of the surviving fish to other hatchery areas with better water quality.

Missouri would likely be alone with 10 percent black faculty

Mizzoui campus3BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — If the University of Missouri succeeds in meeting a student demand for a faculty that’s 10 percent black in two years, it will likely be alone among its peers.

An Associated Press analysis of 2013 federal data found that no state’s “flagship” public university campus had a black faculty population approaching that level, and only a handful topped even the 5 percent mark.

The data shows the norm on most of the campuses is a faculty that’s between 2 percent and 4 percent black.

Administrators say they’re well aware that staff and student bodies often don’t match, and some systems, including the State University of New York, have launched initiatives to try to change that.

Students say they learn better from instructors who seem to understand them and their experiences.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A Nigeria native living in St. Louis faces possible deportation now that he’s admitted in federal court that he’s stolen $734,000 in government funds by filing more than 50 bogus tax returns.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 30-year-old Olufunsho Adeshina pleaded guilty Tuesday in St. Louis.

Prosecutors say that from January 2013 until last May, Adeshina used personal information belonging to others to file the false tax returns.

Adeshina faces roughly five years or more in prison and will have to repay the money. But U.S. District Judge Rodney Sippel warned Adeshina on Tuesday there was a “significant likelihood if not certainty” that he would be deported because of the conviction.

Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 26.
