Wainwright, Cardinals hand Cubs 3-0 loss in MLB opener

riggertCardinalsCHICAGO (AP) — Same ol’ Cubbies. Same old Cardinals, too.

At least for one game.

Adam Wainwright threw six sharp innings to outpitch Jon Lester, and St. Louis handed new Chicago manager Joe Maddon a 3-0 loss Sunday night in the major league opener.

Jason Heyward had three hits in his St. Louis debut and Matt Holliday drove in two runs for the NL Central champions. Throw in Matt Carpenter’s two hits at new-look Wrigley Field, and the top third of the Cardinals’ lineup went 7 for 14 with three RBIs.

Playing their most anticipated opener in years, the Cubs went 0 for 13 with runners in scoring position.

Lester was pulled with one out in the fifth inning on a chilly evening. The ace left-hander, who got a $155 million, six-year contract from Chicago during free agency, allowed three runs and eight hits in his fifth straight opening day start.

The addition of Lester and Maddon ramped up the expectations for Chicago after five straight losing seasons. But it was more of the same in their first game.

The biggest difference for the home team was a giant videoboard in left field, part of a major renovation for the iconic neighborhood ballpark. The closed bleachers were covered by pictures of Hall of Fame slugger Ernie Banks, who played for Chicago for 19 seasons and died in January at age 83.

The Cubs honored Banks with a pregame moment of silence, and his sons Jerry and Joey Banks each threw out a ceremonial first pitch. The club also extended its condolences to the Cardinals for Oscar Taveras, an outfield prospect who died in a car crash in his native Dominican Republic last October.

Heyward got the majors’ first hit of the season when he doubled and scored on Holliday’s single in the first. Holliday had another RBI single in the fifth.

It was more than enough for Wainwright, who was slowed by an abdominal injury early in spring training, but looked just fine in his fourth opening-day start. The 6-foot-7 right-hander made the most of umpire Mike Winters’ wide strike zone, striking out six with no walks. He gave up all five Cubs hits.

Carlos Martinez, who won the fifth starter job in training camp, then worked the seventh for St. Louis. Jordan Walden got three outs before Trevor Rosenthal struck out the side for the save.

The shutout was sure to have some Cubs fans clamoring for Kris Bryant, the power-hitting prospect who recently was sent to the minors for more seasoning.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Cardinals: LHP Jaime Garcia (shoulder inflammation) is expected to begin a throwing program in the next week or so, and general manager John Mozeliak said OF Tommy Pham (strained left quad) is scheduled to see a specialist on Monday. Garcia was competing for the fifth starter job before the injury. “I would say in the next week to two weeks we’ll have a better idea of perhaps expected return or perhaps what a rehab assignment might look like,” Mozeliak said. “But I would say it’s still about 10 to 14 days away before we make that decision.”

Cubs: OF Chris Denorfia (mild left hamstring strain), RHP Jacob Turner (right shoulder inflammation), RHP Dallas Beeler (right shoulder inflammation) and LHP Tsuyoshi Wada (mild left groin strain) were placed on the disabled list before the game. Each of the DL stints is retroactive to March 27.

UP NEXT

Following an off day on Monday, Cubs RHP Jake Arrieta gets the ball on Tuesday against Cardinals RHP Lance Lynn. Arrieta went 10-5 with a 2.53 ERA in 25 starts last year, and Lynn has won at least 15 games in each of the last three seasons.

Royals beat Astros 3-1 in exhibition finale

riggertRoyalsHOUSTON (AP) — Kansas City’s Jason Vargas and Houston’s Collin McHugh both ended the spring with solid starts as the Royals beat the Astros 3-1 in the exhibition finale for both teams on Saturday.

Vargas didn’t allow a hit and struck out three in four innings in his best outing of the spring.

“He really did a nice job of commanding his pitches,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “His changeup was really, really good.”

It was a bounce-back performance from his last start when he yielded seven hits and five runs with four home runs in five innings. Vargas was good for the Royals last season, posting a career-best 3.71 ERA.

Vargas was happy to end the spring on a high note.

“It went well,” he said. “I got away with a few things, but anytime you can keep them off base it’s good. It’s always good for a positive mindset going into the season.”

McHugh allowed one hit and struck out three in four scoreless innings. He’s is coming off a solid season in which he went 11-9 and had a career-low 2.73 ERA.

“They had a pretty good mix of righties and lefties so I was able to throw all my pitches to both sides of the plate and work on some stuff,” McHugh said.

McHugh has worked this spring on developing his changeup and is happy with the results.

“It’s coming along,” he said. “I threw probably seven or eight of them, some good ones, some bad ones, but I think for the most part I’m getting a better feel for it.”

Christian Colon, the fourth overall pick in the 2010 draft who played 21 games for Kansas City as a rookie last season, tripled to start the eighth inning and scored on a single by Gabriel Noriega that made it 2-1. The Royals tacked on another run in that inning on an error.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Houston pitchers Brad Peacock, Josh Fields and Brett Oberholtzer will all start the season on the disabled list, but are making progress in their recoveries.

Peacock, who had hip surgery this offseason, will throw in a simulated game early next week in Florida before joining one of Houston’s affiliates for a start. Fields, who has a groin injury, will also throw in Florida before heading out on a rehabilitation assignment.

Oberholtzer is getting better, but still can’t throw because of a blister on his left index finger and is listed as day to day.

PRAISE FOR CORREA

Carlos Correa was reassigned to minor league camp last week, but the Astros still brought the No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft to Houston for this weekend’s exhibition games. The 20-year-old shortstop rated as Houston’s top prospect will start the season at Double-A Corpus Christi. Though he isn’t quite ready for the majors, manager A.J. Hinch was impressed with his work with the big league club this spring.

“He had a great spring both in what he did on the field and how he interacted with the older players,” Hinch said. “He can’t go anywhere without being known and without the bull’s-eye on his chest as the No. 1 pick overall and a top prospect in the game. But he doesn’t let that deter him from his preparation and how he goes about his business. He’s a mature kid that has a ton of talent and a bright future ahead.”

UP NEXT

Royals: Work out Sunday in Kansas City before opening the season at home against the White Sox on Monday. Yordano Ventura, who signed a five-year, $23 million contract on Saturday, will oppose Jeff Samardzija in the opener.

Astros: Off on Sunday before hosting the Indians on Monday. Left-hander Dallas Keuchel will get his first career opening day start against 2014 AL Cy Young winner Corey Kluber.

Griffons lose two games to Fort Hays Friday via walk-off hits

riggertMissouriWesternHAYS, Kan. – The Missouri Western baseball team came up on the short end of two offensive explosions Friday at Fort Hays State.  The Tigers swept a doubleheader on day one of the series, winning both games in walk-off fashion.

GAME 1: Fort Hays 10, MWSU 9

The Tigers came out on top of a back and forth game that saw both teams come back from three runs down, Fort Hays accomplishing it twice. Fort Hays tied the game at nine on a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh, then won the game with a bases loaded sacrifice fly.

The Griffons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first with an RBI single from Mitch Thorman and a two-run home run from David Glaude. Fort Hays jumped ahead 5-3 with five runs in the second. MWSU got one in the third, then hit three home runs in a four-run fourth inning to take an 8-5 lead. Trevor LaHonta led off the inning with solo shot down the left field line. Cosimo Cannella hit a two-run shot to center and Glaude followed with his second of the game. Hays got within two with a solo home run in the bottom half of the fourth but the Griffons made it a three-run lead with Glaude’s fourth RBI of the game making the score 9-6.

Glaude finished game one 3-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Ryan Degner was 3-5, hitting a double and a triple and scoring two runs. Dylon Koch and Cannella each had two hits. Mike Calimeno was tagged with the loss. He pitched two thirds of an inning in relief of starter Banks Born. Calimeno gave up two runs on three hits. Born went six innings, allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits.

GAME 2: Fort Hays 17, MWSU 16

Runs, runs and more runs was the theme of game two. Fort Hays scored in every inning except the fourth and the Griffons scored in all but the third, sixth and ninth innings. An RBI single up the middle brought the winning run home with two out in the bottom of the ninth.

This one was really about offense and not much else. The Griffons had 18 hits, which included four home runs, two triples and a double. On the other side, Fort Hays matched MWSU’s home run total and added two doubles with no triples. MWSU used five pitchers, including game one starter Banks Born. Born took the loss, his first of the season, going two thirds of an inning.

Glaude hit his third home run of the day in the eighth. His solo shot to left tied the game at 15. The next batter, Cody Childs hit his own solo homer to left that put the Griffons up by one. Fort Hays tied the game in the bottom half of the inning and won it on the single in the ninth.

Missouri Western led by five, 12-7, after scoring six in the top of the fifth. Down by one going into the fourth, LaHonta hit his second home run of the day, Childs added an RBI single, Corbin Duffy drove in two with a single and Ryan Degner hit a three-run home run down the left field line to give MWSU a brief five-run advantage.

Mitch Thorman, Duffy and LaHonta all had three hits. Degner went 2-6 with three RBIs and two scored. Orencio Fisher was 2-6 with four RBIs and a runs scored. Childs drove in two and scored two. Duffy drove in three and scored three times. Starter Josh Lansangan gave up seven runs on six hits in two and a third innings of work. All five Griffon pitchers surrendered at least one run.

No. 14 Missouri Western softball splits doubleheader at Fort Hays State

riggertMissouriWesternHAYS, Kan. – Two valiant comeback efforts ran out of time in Hays Friday afternoon as the Missouri Western softball team split a doubleheader with Fort Hays State Friday. The Tigers nearly came back from seven down in game one and the Griffons came up one run short of completing a seven run comeback themselves in game two.

GAME 1: #14 MWSU 7, Fort Hays 5

Missouri Western held off a late charge by Fort Hays to pick up the victory in game one. The Tigers scored five runs in the last two innings and brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh.

The Griffons jumped out to a 7-0 lead after five and a half innings. The Tigers picked up three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to make it interesting. Kailey Green hit a three-run, two out home run in the first to put MWSU on the board. Green scored the team’s fourth run of the game in the fourth when she scored on Shelbie Atwell’s ground out. MWSU got three more two-out runs in the sixth. Tiffany Gillaspy drove in two with a doubled down the left field line and Sydney Washington made it 7-0 with a single up the middle that brought Gillaspy home.

Janie Smith hung on for the win, going all seven innings and allowing three earned runs on seven hits. She struck out four and walked three. Smith improved her record to 13-5 on the year. Green went 2-4 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. Atwell and Megan Korgie both went 2-3, as did Washington.

GAME 2: Fort Hays 8, #14 MWSU 7

A similar script with a role reversal from game one saw Fort Hays jump out to a 7-0 lead after the first two innings. After one run in each in the third and fourth innings, the Griffons scored three in the fifth and two in the sixth to have a chance headed to the seventh.

After two straight one-hit shutouts, Shyanne Saladino had her scoreless innings streak snapped when she gave up a three-run home run in the first. Then she gave up another in the second that chased her from the game, or so it seemed. Taylor Schaben gave up a two-run home run to the first batter she faced in relief. Two batters later it became a 7-0 lead for the Tigers.

Sydney Washington put MWSU on the board in the top of the third with an RBI single and Kailey Green’s second home run of the day pulled the Griffon within five in the fourth. After an error and a single put two Fort Hays runners on in the fourth, Saladino reentered. She surrendered an RBI-single that put Fort Hays up 8-2 before recording the final out of the inning. An RBI single from Katie Klosterman and a two-RBI single from Shelbie Atwell pulled the Griffons within three in the fifth. MWSU added two more in the sixth with a run scoring when Gillaspy reached on an error and an RBI double from Green. Saladino retired the Tigers in order in the bottom of the inning to set up the last chance for MWSU. Atwell led off the top of the seventh with a walk before Brooke Schaben popped up to the shortstop. Rebekah Mueller reached on a fielder’s choice that took Atwell off the bases and another pop up to short by Rathmann ended the game.

Green finished game two 2-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. On the day, she was 4-7 with five RBIs and four runs scored. Klosterman also had two hits in game two, going 2-3.

The split left the team’s record at 27-11, 11-3 in the MIAA. MWSU plays at Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday.
