TOPEKA—Tax collections show a continuation of the revenue stability displayed last fiscal year, with total taxes more than 10 percent above last July, according to the latest monthly revenue report released Wednesday, from the Kansas Department of Revenue.

July tax collections total $499.04 million, which is 10.03 percent over last year, and 2.33 percent, or $11.35 million over revised estimates.

“Fiscal year 2019 is starting much like we saw in the 12 months of fiscal year 2018, with collections above estimates, and above the previous year’s intake,” Revenue Secretary Sam Williams said. “We anticipate we will keep seeing this trend in the coming months.”

Because it’s the first month of the fiscal year, July is the only report where the numbers for the month and the fiscal year are the same. Individual income tax collections were $227.69 million, or $39.21 million above last year, exceeding estimates by $7.69 million.

Sales tax collections totaled $205.75 million, which is growth $2.25 million over last year and $753,000 above estimates.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Kansas City, Kansas, police say a man is in stable condition after being shot by officers.

Police say the incident began when officers were called Tuesday night to the scene of an attempted car burglary.

KCTV reports when the car’s owner confronted the suspect, he fired several shots into the air and rode away on a bicycle.

Officers found the man about a block away. Police say when he came out of a secluded area, the suspect was armed. Officers fired and hit him in the arm and leg.

The man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. No officers were hurt.

The police department’s major case unit is investigating the shooting.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A 19-year-old Kansas City man is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of a man after a minor traffic accident.

Prosecutors charged Trevyon Shepheard Tuesday in the death of 57-year-old Leonard Joyner III.

Charging documents in the case indicate Shepheard and Joyner had a minor car crash on Sunday afternoon.

Witnesses said Joyner appeared to offer Shepheard cash after the accident. Instead of accepting the cash, police say Shepheard got a gun from his car and fired several shots at Joyner. Witnesses said Joyner was shot several times after he was on the ground.

Prosecutors also charged 18-year-old Rafeasia Kirkland with tampering with evidence. They allege she was in the car and drove Shepheard away from the scene.

OSAWATOMIE, Kan. (AP) — The state has appointed a new interim superintendent at Osawatomie State Hospital.

A state official said Tuesday that Wes Cole, a retired psychiatric hospital employee, was named interim superintendent at the hospital. The appointment was approved July 24.

Cole replaces Clayton Bledsoe, who was named interim superintendent in April.

Cole was a member of the governor’s behavioral health advisory council and has an extensive background in the field.

Bledsoe was hired in May 2017 as nursing director at the hospital.

Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services officials didn’t release a reason for Bledsoe’s departure.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – Independent candidate Craig O’Dear’s campaign says it has submitted more than enough signatures to get on the November ballot in the hotly contested U.S. Senate race in Missouri.

Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley, a Republican, is trying to unseat Democratic U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill in a state President Donald Trump won by nearly 19 points. It remains to be seen what effect of the addition of an independent candidate will have in that close contest.

O’Dear says in a statement that Missouri voters will have the choice to pick a candidate committed to leading away from hyper-partisan warfare and gridlock and toward common sense problem solving.

O’Dear’s campaign says it submitted 22,000 signatures to the Missouri secretary of state’s office, more than twice the required signatures.

LACLEDE COUNTY — One person died in an accident just after 4p.m. Tuesday in Laclede County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 1999 Jeep Cherokee driven by Jessica M. Hobbs, 38, Lebanon, was eastbound on Highway 64 three miles west of Lebanon.

The Jeep traveled off the right side of the road, returned to the road and crossed the center line. The driver overcorrected and the Jeep traveled off the right side of the road again, hit a utility pole overturned and ejected the driver.

Hobbs was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Shadel’s Colonial Chapel. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congressional auditors say about 30 million people — 21 percent of U.S. taxpayers — will have to come up with more money to pay their taxes next year because their employers withheld too little from their paychecks under government tables keyed to the new tax law.

New tax withholding tables for employers were put together by the government early this year. About 30 million workers received pay that was “under-withheld” — making their paychecks bigger this year but bringing a larger bill at tax time next spring, according to the Government Accountability Office’s report.

About 27 million taxpayers would have been affected even if the new law hadn’t been enacted. The changes, however, added 3 million to that number.

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) — A 36-year-old Kansas man remains hospitalized with a head injury he suffered three weeks ago when a Joplin police officer used a stun gun on him.

Police say James Wary, of Pittsburg, Kansas, was recently moved to a transitional care unit and is listed in stable condition at Freeman Hospital West.

Wary fell July 9 and hit his head on pavement at a Walmart store after an officer used the stun gun to stop him from fleeing. Wary had previously been banned from the store.

Capt. Trevor Duncan said when Wary ran, officer Isaac Costley used his stun gun. Duncan Wary became unresponsive after falling and striking his head. He became unresponsive.

Duncan said an internal police review board cleared the officer of any wrongdoing.
