LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Police say a 10-year- boy brought a gun to a science camp in Kansas and accidently discharged it.
No one was injured but the incident caused the evacuation Tuesday of the room at the New Century Fieldhouse in Johnson County where the camp was being held.
Capt. Rob Weber of the Johnson County Parks and Recreation Department Police says about nine to 10 children were in the room.
Police say the boy brought the gun from home in his backpack to “show it around” at the camp. The child later thought better of that plan and kept the gun in the backpack. He accidently hit the gun’s trigger when he reached into the backpack to get something out. The single round shot into the floor.

An open house will be held this week to celebrate the completion of the new fire station 11.
The fire station is located at 2316 South 22nd Street, just south of 36 Highway.
The open house will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
According to a press release from the City of St. Joseph, fire crews will conduct tours of the station and refreshments will be provided. Fire department staff will also be available to answer questions and provide information on the construction of station 11. Funding for the construction of the new fire station 11 was provided through the 2013 Capital Improvements Program (CIP) half-cent sales tax.
The construction of the new fire station 9 is nearing completion and an open house will be held in the near future.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A 17-year-old from Kansas City who is already facing murder charges will stand trial as an adult in the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old during a gun sale.

Andrew Rodriquez is charged with second-degree murder and five other counts in the April death of Jesus Reyes. Reyes and another teenager were found shot by police who happened to be in the area. Reyes was dead at the scene. The other teen survived.
According to a probable cause statement, the teenager who survived told police he planned to buy a gun from Rodriquez, who he knew from school. He said when he gave Rodriquez and another person cash for the gun, Rodriquez shot the two victims.
Police later recovered several guns from Rodriquez’s home.
On Monday, Rodriquez was certified to stand trial as an adult.
TOPEKA –The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is reporting two cases of neuroinvasive West Nile virus (WNV) disease in individuals who reside in Johnson County. Four regions of the state remain under a high-risk warning for WNV, including north central, south central, northwest, and southwest Kansas. Northeast and southeast regions are at moderate risk for WNV infections.

WNV can be spread to people through mosquito bites, but it is not spread from person to person. About one in five people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms. Roughly one out of 150 infected people develop the more severe version of the disease, neuroinvasive disease, which includes swelling of the brain or brain tissue and, in some cases, death. There are no vaccines or medications to treat WNV. People who have had WNV before are considered immune.
“Although for most people West Nile virus may not cause a great deal of concern, we encourage residents, especially our vulnerable populations, to take steps to prevent infection because of the potential for complications,” said Dr. Greg Lakin, Chief Medical Officer, KDHE.
KDHE recommends you know your risk of WNV and take action to prevent mosquito bites and protect yourself against WNV.
But specifics in state and local tax incentives remain to be settled. To help lure the project, officials have offered tax breaks they didn’t make public at a press conference about the expansion.
“There is a small amount of incentives that come from the state,” Gov. Jeff Colyer said. “Those are being finished up right now, we don’t have the final details. …We’re still in negotiation on that.”

Colyer said Overland Park has also put incentives into a package for Shamrock.
The $250 million project will redevelop the 30-acre property on the northeast corner of the major intersection, which housed a K-Mart before it closed in 2013. But the property was once known for the French Market, which Colyer said he and his family often traveled to visit from Hays, Kansas, when he was a kid.
“It was a shame to see it die and wilt right here,” Colyer said. “But now it has life, and it has life because of Shamrock. They are really showing what we can do.”
The 32-year-old family-owned transportation logistics and financial services business bought the two towers, then empty and rundown, on the northwest corner of 95th and Metcalf in 2012, bringing 700 jobs. As it expanded, CEO Bill Ryan said the company had a choice to either build a third tower, or expand across the street. Earlier this month, it purchased the 30-acre property across Metcalf.
Overland Park Mayor Carl Gerlach said the expansion is the sort of project imagined in ‘Vision Metcalf’ — a redevelopment plan adopted by Overland Park City Council in 2008 to revitalize the Metcalf corridor from Interstate 35 South to 123rd Street, which has seen $570 million of private investment, and an additional $270 million within five designated areas, including the 95th Street intersection.
“Other retail commercial development in this area are up for sale right now, so we’re going to see more redevelopment along Metcalf shortly,” Gerlach said. “That’s the spine of Johnson County — Metcalf Avenue.”
With unemployment rates in Kansas already at a low of 3.4 percent as of March, Colyer — who is running for a full term as governor — said he hopes these jobs will attract candidates residing outside of Kansas.
CRAWFORD COUNTY — One person died in an accident just before 2a.m. Tuesday in Crawford County.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Honda Civic driven by Brandon D. Santonge, 17, Cuba, was northbound on Highway DD one mile north of Cuba.
The driver swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle and lost control of the Honda. It traveled off the road and overturned.
A passenger Colten Z. Santonge, 15, Cuba, was transported by air to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis where he died. Another passenger Dakota M. McMullin, 15, Cuba, was transported to Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan.
Brandon Sontonge was wearing a seat belt and not injured. The passengers were not wearing seat belts, according to the MSHP.
Two people were injured in a three vehicle crash Monday afternoon in Grundy County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, at 2:45 p.m., 25-year-old Drew A. Kelly of Trenton was driving a Ford Fusion east on MO 6 about three miles west of Trenton when his vehicle crossed the center line and hit the trailer unit of a semi. Kelly’s vehicle continued into the westbound lane and hit the front of a Ford Explorer.
Kelly was transported to Wright Memorial Hospital in Trenton for treatment of moderate injuries. The driver of the Ford Explorer, 70-year-old Herbert G. Lamb of Cleveland, Georgia, was transported to Wright Memorial for treatment of serious injuries.
The driver of the semi was not injured. Both Kelly and Lamb were wearing seatbelts.

A second lawsuit has been filed by members of an Indiana family who lost nine relatives when a tourist boat sank this month in Missouri.
The federal lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Missouri on behalf of the estates of 45-year-old Angela Coleman and 68-year-old Belinda Coleman.
The women and seven relatives died in the July 19 sinking at Table Rock Lake near Branson that killed 17 people. The suit seeking unspecified damages comes after a lawsuit seeking $100 million in damages was filed Sunday on behalf of the estates of 76-year-old Ervin Coleman and 2-year-old Maxwell Ly.
Both suits allege that the owners and operators of the tourist boat put profits over people’s safety when they decided to put the Ride the Ducks boat on a lake despite design problems and severe weather warnings.
OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — The owner of an Olathe barbeque restaurant has denied using a customer’s credit card for a spending spree.

Matthew Sander, owner of Smokin’ Joe’s Bar-B-Q, was ordered Monday to stand trial on 24 felony and misdemeanor financial charges.
An attorney for Sander entered not guilty pleas for him.
Sander is charged in four cases with several counts of identity theft, criminal use of a credit card, felony theft and misdemeanor theft.
Most of the charges stem from an incident in January when a customer left a credit card at the restaurant. The customer canceled the card but when he got his next statement, more than $7,300 had been charged on it.
Olathe detectives obtained video that allegedly showed Sander using the card.
BOLIVAR, Mo. (AP) – A Bolivar woman accused of causing the death of her 15 year-old son is no longer facing a murder charge.

A Polk County authorities dropped a second-degree murder charge against 41-year-old Danielle Baker, a registered nurse who was accused of supplying liquid morphine and other controlled substances to her 15 year-old son. He died of an overdose March 20 at the family’s home.
The morphine was traced to a patient who died at Citizens Memorial Healthcare Facility where Baker worked.
The charge was dropped under a law that allows someone to call for medical help for a person who is overdosing without fear of facing charges. Baker called 911 to report her son’s emergency.
Baker is still charged with stealing a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence and endangerment of a child.
