Senate Candidate Sarah Steelman Visits St Joseph

Sam Steelman, poses with his mother, Sarah Steelman after joining KFEQ on the Hotline Thursday. Sam is helping on the campaign trail for U.S. Senate

Sarah Steelman will join the Northwest Missouri Republicans club Friday morning.

She’s campaigning in St Joseph this week in the Republican Primary to challenge Senator Claire McCaskill in 2012.

Steelman will join the club at 9:00 a.m. Friday morning in the Kimberly Room of the Stoney Creek Inn for a continental breakfast.

Steelman is from Rolla.  She’s a graduate if the University of Missouri in Columbia.  She served as State Treasurer of Missouri from 2004 until 2008.

“People are just really worried about what’s going on in this country, and for good reason,” Steelman said.  “We need to put in place what I call pro-growth economic policies.”

Steelman holds a masters degree in economics.

“What they’re doing is not working,” she said. “I think we need to eliminate all of the loopholes and flatten the tax rate for people.”

Steelman will face U.S. Rep. Todd Akin of St Louis in the republican primary.  In May, Steelman called U.S. House republicans, including her opponent Akin, “toothless dragons.”

“A lot of people like to take different little shots in politics and maybe one of the things to do just to get to the bottom of it; you want to talk about different issues? Let’s just have a debate,” Akin responded to the comments while campaigning in St Joseph on May 19th.

Asked about the comments from Akin, Steelman agreed.

“We could do it right here in St Joe,” Steelman said.

(VIDEO) Player’s Cellphone Interrupts Tennis Match

Your cellphone going off at work or is never good.  It’s also embarrassing when your phone goes off in a quiet environment, like a tennis match.  So it must be really embarrassing when your phone goes off while your playing a tennis match against the worlds number-one at match point.

That’s exactly what happened to Alize Cornet, during her first-round loss to Caroline Wozniacki in the Swedish Open.  She had to silence the phone which was left in her bag on the court.  Watch below.

(UPDATE)Fire Officials say a Mobile Home Burned in Agency

Investigators are not yet sure of the cause of a mobile home fire south of Agency that happened overnight.

The fire was originally reported as an explosion, Buchanan County Sheriff Mike Strong confirmed that Wednesday but fire officials say otherwise.

A Sergeant with the Sheriff’s Department called to notify the Sheriff of the explosion overnight.  A fire inspector is said to be on the scene today, he said.

The north end of the structure was on fire when fire crews arrived, South Central Buchanan County Fire Chief Dennis Johnson said.

“Were talking about a double wide mobile home that had a gable roof on top of it of so you had literally two roofs and fire being in-between made it challenging to put out,” He said

It was reported just after 6:30 Tuesday evening at 6447 South East Tillery Road.

Some rumors circulated that it may be drug related.  The Drug Strike Task Force is aware of the explosion but knew no other details as of Wednesday afternoon, officials there said.

Railroad Official Doubts Train Passed Over Drunk Iowa Teen

An Iowa Interstate Railroad official doubts a train passed over a teenager in downtown Des Moines who was passed out between the rails, leaving him with only minor injuries.

Mick Burkart, the railroad’s chief operating officer, says there is about 10 inches of clearance between a locomotive and railroad ties. That’s little space for someone to lie safely beneath the rails

However, 17-year-old Christian Michael Latshaw told police that’s what happened Sunday night. He says he was drunk and passed out, only to awake under the train.

Train engineers saw someone on the tracks but couldn’t see what happened. The engine and first car allegedly rolled over the teen before the train came to a stop.

Burkart told The Des Moines Register on Tuesday it’s more likely Latshaw stood up and was knocked clear of the train.

Latshaw was treated for head cuts and a thigh bruise.

He may have escaped serious injury — but he hasn’t escaped a trespassing charge.

The cloud covered the area and shutdown the airport near Phoenix as it pushed through and also left thousands without power.

The storm brought a gritty substance and looked like a large rolling cloud as it blew into the town. If you wonder what it might look like, watch the video report below from the Phoenix area NBC affiliate, News 12. It looks similar to what blizzard conditions are like in the Midwest.

Cheating Charge Filed Against Bass Tourney Entrant

By Bill Graham, Missouri Department of Conservation.

A Warsaw man faces a felony charge of attempt to steal by deceit for allegedly trying to weigh in fish at a bass tournament that he caught before the tournament began.

David R. Gann, 72, was entered in a family-style bass tournament on Truman Lake on June 4 when the alleged violation occurred, said Mike Burton, a Protection District Supervisor for the Missouri Department of Conservation.

A few days prior, anglers looking for a place on the lake to set trot lines came across a rope tied to a wire box in the water that contained three largemouth bass. They notified conservation agents.

Burton, Conservation Agent Rob Farr, and Protection District Supervisor Dan Love used the information to locate the fish box. Inside they found one bass weighing more than five pounds, which had died due to stress, and two live bass topping two and three pounds respectively. The agents clipped fins on the live bass and took photos for later identification, Burton said.

On the day of the tournament, the agents watched the site. They saw Gann fishing in a boat by himself near the site, Burton said, and they watched him remove fish from the box. They saw him throw away the five-pound bass that was dead and put the other two bass in his boat’s live well.

The tournament weigh-in was at Osage Bluff Marina. After Gann’s catch was weighed, conservation agents and Missouri Water Patrol officers took possession of the fish. They found fish with fins clipped by agents before the tourney began. Gann was questioned and taken into custody by Water Patrol officers.

Conservation agents issued misdemeanor citations to Gann, one for wanton waste of fish and another for having an unlabeled live box in the water.

On June 21, Prosecutor Karen Woodley filed an attempt to steal by deceit charge against Gann in Benton County Circuit Court. Gann was arraigned on June 28 and entered a not guilty plea. A hearing is set for Aug. 2.

The misdemeanor charges are punishable by up to one year in jail and fines of up to $1,000. The Class D felony charge is punishable by up to four years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Anyone spotting a possible fish and wildlife code violation can contact Operation Game Thief at 1-800-392-1111. The telephone line is answered 24 hours a day. Callers may remain anonymous, or they may ask to be considered for a reward of $50 to $1,000 if the information leads to an arrest.

Holt County Funds Going Dry

Photo by Jamie Barnes of Barnes Realty

As the people of Holt County continue to fight flood waters near towns in the western side of the county, the county budget is taking a strain after four floods in the last five years.

They started this year with the lowest cash-balance County Clerk Kathy Kunkel has seen since she was elected.

“We are really behind the eight ball on this,” Kunkel said.

Last years flooding was historic, as was 1993, but Kunkel fears this years flood is the worst.  Waters continue to soak Big Lake and creep up on several other communities.  Big Lake has more than eight feet of water in some places, maybe more, Kunkel said.

Many buildings and  homes will likely need to be bulldozed in and rebuilt.  That is, if the people decide to come back.

County officials are hoping for state and federal assistance to help fight the flood, and rebuild once the waters recede sometime this fall.

“It’s absoluty the only lifeline we have left,” Kunkel said.

The county has several blows to it’s economy from the flooding.  More than 160,000 acre’s of farmland are underwater, Big Lake State Park and the Big Lake Village are closed leaving a budget gap from tourism and the Interstate north of Holt County is closed.

“There is no summer traffic what so ever,” Kunkel said.  “So all of my sales tax is going away at the same time.”

Above all, there’s one thing Kunkel said Holt County needs now more than anything.

“Prayers,” she laughed.  “Send them our way.”
