RaeLynn talks with Qcountry’s Travis Dodge ahead of LakeFest 2016 (Audio)

Qcountry 92.7 talked to country singer ReaLynn Thursday ahead of LakeFest 2016.

“I wrote ‘God Made Girls’ with a couple of my friends,” ReaLynn said. “We all got in a room together and we started talking about all the things that boys couldn’t do without girls and you get four independent women talking about that and you’re going to write a song like ‘God Made Girls’ and we wrote it fast.  We wrote it in like an hour and a half.”

ReaLynn and Frankie Ballard will preform with headliner Tyler Farr Friday, July 15th at Warnock Lake.

“I have a new single coming out.  It’s a song I actually wrote when I was 17 or 18,” ReaLynn said. “I wrote this song called ‘Love Triangle’…When a song still stands out to you four years later you know it’s a special song.  I wrote this song about being a kid stuck in-between my parents.  My parents got a divorce when I was 3-years-old I was always that kid relaying information back and forth and always walking on eggshells not knowing what to say.”

LakeFest is the kick-off for the annual Amelia Earhart Festival in Atchison.  The Atchison Chamber said the festival also includes a downtown fair, education and research events, children’s events, and a fireworks show on the banks of the Missouri River drawing in tens of thousands of visitors every year.

Qcountry plans to catch up with Frankie Ballard Tuesday and Tyler Farr on Wednesday.  CLICK HERE for more on LakeFest 2016.

Agency asking for SOS volunteers

SOS volunteers are needed by the United Way of Greater St. Joseph.

“United Way SOS is a drive that will be collecting new athletic shoes or socks and we are collecting those to distribute through Community Service’s Soles for Christ program,” said Kylee Strough, United Way President.

She said SOS stands for Socks or Shoes. Strough said while the AFL-CIO’s Soles for Christ program gives school age children in need a new pair of shoes, sometimes those kids only have one pair of socks.

“Through Community Services they’ve had enough shoes for the children but each child only gets one pair of socks and that’s mainly so they have a pair to try on shoes with,” Strough said. “They found out from some families that that’s really all the socks they have at home is just that one pair.”

The SOS drive will be held July 30 and 31 at the East Hills Shopping Center. Strough said volunteers are needed to help collect the donated socks and shoes.

“We are looking for volunteers to work in pairs of two or three at a couple of different entrances and one set of volunteers to work in the center court area collecting items,” she said.

Individuals who want to sign up to help with the drive can call United Way at (816) 364-2381 or CLICK HERE.

The AFL-CIO Community Services will hold its Soles for Christ distribution Aug. 8 and 9 at its location on 1203 N. 6th St.

Additional charges have been filed against a man accused of intentionally setting fire to a home in Midtown after his girlfriend broke-up with him.

As we previously reported, Khayree Darton, 36 was charged in April with second-degree arson. The Buchanan County Prosecutor’s Office filed new felony charges Wednesday in connection with the April investigation including first-degree arson, tamper or attempt to tamper with a victim in a felony prosecution, and third-degree domestic assault.

According to court documents, Darton while in custody in reference to domestic assault has called the victim repeatedly trying to influence her and change her statement.

As we reported previously, on April 7 shortly after midnight in the 1600 block of S 17th St Darton is accused to intentionally setting fire to the home displacing a family of four.

“Told Darton she did not want to be in a relationship with him and started to leave the residence when Darton wanted her to stay,” said Officer Eric Powell with the St. Joseph Police Dept. “As (she) was leaving Darton said ‘that’s why I caught your house on fire.’”

Powell said the woman left the residence and returned about seven minutes later to find the house engulfed in flames.

The family was found safely evacuated.

Darton had been scheduled for a jury trial for February of 2017.  A court date on the new charges has not been set.  Darton remains behind bars in the Buchanan County Jail without bail.

Authorities continue to investigate Fourth of July stabbings

Buchanan county sheriffThe Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating after two men were stabbed at a large Fourth of July party.

Monday around 2:45 a.m. authorities responded to the area of 6400 block of Possum Holler Road near Agency in reference to a large fight with weapons.

“Prior to arrival deputies were advised that two males were being transported with stab wounds,” Col. Bill Puett said.

A 20-year-old from St. Joseph was taken to Mosaic Life Care with what was described as serious but non-life threatening stab wounds and a 19-year-old from Faucett was also transported with non-life threatening wounds.  Puett said the attack was believed to have been targeted.

He said the investigation could be a lengthy process due to the number of people believed to be involved in the fight which at one point was described as around 50 people. Around 150 to 200 people were believed to be in attendance at the party.

“We’ve heard ages including everything from kids from all four local high schools, Missouri Western age students, and people in their 20s,” Puett said. “Because of the shear magnitude of the people there, we’re still trying to sort it all out and identify people.”

He said individuals in attendance came from all over including, Faucett, St. Joseph, Mound City, Iowa, Oregon and other locations.

“Investigators are still trying to sort through all the information,” Puett said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact authorities.

Blown transformer moves up Mustangs game

Thunderstorms have caused some issued for the St. Joseph Mustangs forcing the team to move up its Wednesday start time.

The Nevada Griffons will take on the St. Joe Mustangs tonight at Phil Welch Stadium at 5:30 p.m. instead of the regular 7 p.m. start time. Ky Turner, General Manager for the Mustangs said the game time was moved up due to a blown transformer to stadium lights.  Gates will open at 4:30 p.m.

Turner said the issue was discovered early this morning after storms blew through the area.

“The rest of the stadium is fine and operating as normal it’s just the stadium lights,” Turner said. “There is a chance the stadium lights could be repaired by then but just in case.”

He said crews from Kansas City Power and Light and the City Parks Department are working on the issue.  But in case the lights are not restored in time for the evening game they went ahead and made the decision to move the game time up.

The Mustangs said they plan to send University of Rhode Island pitcher Jason Blanchard to the mound as the team goes for its eighth win in a row.

Former car dealership employee accused of stealing more than $42,000

Cynthia Carson
Cynthia Carson

A former employee of Summers Motors in St. Joseph is accused of appropriating thousands of dollars.

Cynthia Carson, 40 is charged in Buchanan County with a class C felony of stealing.

According to court documents, in April, David Summers the owner of Summers Motors reported to police that former employee Carson appropriated $42,076.65 from his business by issuing false receipts to customers, using the credit cards of customers to pay on accounts to cover the taking of funds, and issuing false/forged lien releases on sold vehicles belonging to Summers Motors.

Detective Richard Shelton with the St. Joseph Police Department said in court documents that Carson appropriated $3,420 from a customer by intercepting the cash payments and made false statements in the computer saying that customer was sick and unable to pay for her vehicle payments.

“Summers was made to believe by Carson that (the customer) was sick and unable to pay for her vehicle payments and wrote the account off when (the customer) was making the payments to Summers Motors,” Shelton said.

Shelton said on June 16 Summers Motors provided an audit of accounts showing 31 customers accounts had been used by Carson so she could appropriate funds from the business.

“Cynthia Carson, aka Cynthia Baker has moved out of Buchanan County and is now employed at another vehicle car dealer’s business in Liberty,” Shelton said.

Carson is being held in the Buchanan County Jail on $10,000 cash bail.  An arraignment is set for Friday.

Voter registration deadline nears for August primary

VoteThe deadline to register to vote in the August election is just a few days away.

Buchanan County Clerk Mary Baack-Garvey said Wednesday, July 6th is the last day to register to vote in the Aug. 2 primary election.

“The best thing they can do is come straight to our office and do that in person so they know the paperwork has been done and filed in our office,” Baack-Garvey said. “They can also go to the department of motor-vehicle and the libraries all over town have registrars there as well but I just recommend they come here in person just so we know they got their registration and information turned into us.”

She said voters who think they are registered but haven’t cast a ballot in some time should call the office to double-check their registration.

“A lot of people assume that they are registered but they really aren’t due to inactivity,” she said.

A low voter turnout is anticipated for the Aug. primary.

“There’s just not a lot of heated races at this moment.  A lot of our people either don’t have a primary or they’re uncontested all together.  We have a couple,” Baack-Garvey said. “I would think that we would probably hit 25-percent that that’s probably overshooting a little bit.”

Around 47,000 people are registered to vote in Buchanan County.  Baack-Garvey said a big push for voter registration will be made ahead of the Nov. Presidential Election.

“We have about 15,000 deleted voters and we’re hoping to find where they’re at,” Baack-Garvey said. “We do a mailer by statute every two years to our registered voters but this is going to be a different kind of mailer.  This is going to go to residents.”
