Griffon women’s golf team finishes 3rd at Upper Iowa Invite

riggertMissouriWesternThe Missouri Western women’s golf team finished 3rd at the Upper Iowa Invitational firing a two round total of 631 (311-320) at the Preserve Golf Course on Rathbun Lake. The Griffons finished behind Augustana (S.D.) and Concordia St. Paul.

The Griffons were led by freshman Amber Chivington with a two round total of 156 (76-80) while Natalie Bird finished with a 157 (76-81). Callie Willson fired a 158 (80-78) whle Anna Kloeppel finished with 161 (79-82). Casi Webb rounded out the scoring with a 162 (81-81).

The Griffons take part in the Green and Gold Classic on Sunday, April 14 and Monday, April 15. The teams will play the first round at the St. Joseph Country Club while the second round will be played at Mozingo Lake Golf Club in Maryville, Mo.

MWSU tennis falls to William Jewell

riggertMissouriWesternThe Missouri Western tennis team fell 8-1 in non-conference action against the William Jewell Cardinals on Monday afternoon at the Noyes Tennis Courts. The Griffons fall to 6-14 with the loss.

The Griffons picked up one victory on the day with Ceara Boldridge winning at No. 4 singles over Loree Hazelrigg by scores of 6-3, 6-2. Boldridge has now won six of her last seven singles matches which include her last three. The Griffons had a couple other close matches but were unable to come away with the victories.

Kayla Dysart fell 6-2, 6-4 in No. 3 singles against Katy Lehenbauer while Boldridge and Lindsay Beger fell 8-6 against Savannah Drew and Jaimie Baker in No. 3 doubles.

The Cardinals improve to 15-5 with the victory.

The Griffons return to action on Wednesday, April 10 with a non-conference match against Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan. Match time is set for 2:00 pm.

Weather postpones Missouri Western baseball & softball

riggertMissouriWesternThe Missouri Western baseball double header scheduled for Tuesday, April 9 with Nebraska-Kearney in Kearney, Neb. has been postponed due to the weather and poor field conditions. The games may be rescheduled for Thursday, April 10 but that decision will be made on Wednesday.

Due to the weather in the St. Joseph area the Missouri Western softball double header scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, April 9 with the Lincoln Blue Tigers has been moved to Wednesday, Arpil 17. Game time is still scheduled for 5/7 pm from the Griffon Softball Field at the Spring Sports Complex. The double header that was scheduled for next Wendesday in Quincy, Ill. with the Quincy Hawks has not been rescheduled at this time.

Missouri Western loses series finale at Pitt State; win streak ends at nine

riggertMissouriWesternPittsburg State pitcher Matt Stalcup limited the No. 12 Missouri Western baseball team to four hits in seven innings of work and Pittsburg State snapped the Griffons nine-game winning streak with a 5-1 victory Sunday at Al Ortolani Field. The Griffons drop to 27-5 overall and 21-2 in MIAA play.

Stalcup (4-2) walked two batters and registered nine strikeouts, before leaving the game after the seventh inning with a 4-0 lead. Ryan McKay got the final six outs to lock down the win for the Gorillas.

Pitt State scored a run in the first and two more in the second to grab an early 3-0 lead against the Western.

Ryan Bilovesky had an RBI single in the first inning, while Cody Ball belted a solo home run in the second and Evan Thomas drove in the third run with an infield hit.

Ball, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, added a sacrifice fly in the sixth and a run-scoring single in the eighth.

Missouri Western had five hits in the game with Spencer Shockley going 3-for-4 with one RBI. Ethan Ward got the loss going going 5.2 inning giving up 10 hits and four earned runs. He falls to 2-2 with the loss.

The win helped the Gorillas improve to 19-13 overall and 16-12 in MIAA play.

The Griffons return to action on Tuesday, April 9 with a double header in Kearney, Neb. against the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.

Western women sit in 3rd after first round of Upper Iowa Invite

riggertMissouriWesternAfter day one of the Upper Iowa University Invitational the Missouri Western women’s golf team sits in 3rd place after firing a record low round 311. The event is being played at the Preserve Golf Course on Rathbun Lake.

The Griffons low rounds came from Natalie Bird and Amber Chivington both shooting 76 while Anna Kloeppel fired a 79. Callie Wilson and Casi Webb rounded out the scoring with 80 and 81 respectively.

The final round of the invite will be played Monday.

Griffons blast 10 home runs in doubleheader sweep at Pitt State

riggertMissouriWesternThe Missouri Western baseball team hit 10 home runs in a doubleheader sweep over the Pittsburg State Gorillas on Saturday afternoon. The Griffons won both games 12-5 improving to 27-5 overall and 21-1 in MIAA action.

Game 1
MWSU 12, PSU 5

The Griffons got another solid pitching performance from Brandon Simmons as he remains undefeated on the season. He went five innings giving up eight hits and two earned runs while striking out two. His two strikeouts puts him in 5th on the all-time list for the Griffons with 204. He is 7-0 on the season.

The Griffons got on the board in the second inning getting four runs on six hits. Grant Fink led off the inning with a double and scored on a Jimmy Smelcer single to center field. Michael Schulze got the Griffons first homer of the day while Kyle Simpson got an RBI single.

Things continued to go well for the Griffons in the third when they got five more hits and six more runs. Fink hit his 12th homer of the season leading off the inning while Bubba Dotson hit his 9th homer and third grand slam of the season. Nate Ramler hit the final homer in the inning giving MWSU the 10-0 lead after three.

In the fourth Jake Schrader hit a homer and Schulze hit his second of the game and fifth of the season giving MWSU the 12-0 lead.

The Gorillas scored five late runs but it would be to little to late in game one.

The Griffons has 18 hits with Jimmy Smelcer getting three hits while seven other Griffons had two hits.

The Gorialls had 12 hits with five players getting two hits. Jake Stevenson got the loss going 2.2 innnings giving up 12 hits and 10 earned runs. He falls to 2-3 with the loss.

Game 2
MWSU 12, PSU 5

In game two the Griffon bats continued to stay red hot pounding out 14 more hits and four more home runs. The Griffons opened up the scoring in the first hitting three straight doubles and then Spencer Shockley connecting with his second homer of the season giving MWSU the 4-0 lead.

In the second inning Shawn Egge hit his third homer of the season and Dotson connected on his 10th homer giving MWSU a 7-0 lead after two.

The Gorillas battled back scoring the next three runs cutting MWSU’s lead to 7-3 after four. The game stayed that way until the 7th when the Griffons put two more on the board. Shockley got two more RBI with a two run double giving the Griffons the 9-3 lead.

In the eighth Nate Ramler hit another home run putting MWSU up 12-3. That would be all they would need in the victory.

The Griffons were led by Dotson and Shockley as they both had three hits. Dotson scored four runs and had two RBI while Schockley had four RBI. Banks Born go the win going four innings giving up five hits and two earned runs. He improves to 4-0 with the victory.

Pittsburg State had 13 hits with Austin Lastimado getting three. They fall to 18-13 overall and 15-12 in MIAA play.

The two teams play the final game of the series on Sunday, April 7. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.

Western softball bounces back and sweeps Nebraska-Kearney

riggertMissouriWesternThe 24th ranked Missouri Western softball team got back on  track sweeping a doubleheader against the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers on  Saturday afternoon. The Griffons got strong pitching performances from Jackie Bishop and Janie Smith improving to 26-10 overall and 10-4 in MIAA play.

Game 1
MWSU 7, UNK 1

In game one the Griffons used two big innings and a strong pitching performance by Bishop earning a 7-1 victory. The Griffons had 12 hits in the contest with four players getting two hits.

The Griffons broke the game open in the third inning scoring four runs on five hits with two out. The Griffons got five hits in a row with Kandall Sorensen and Taylor Anding each getting two RBI doubles giving MWSU the 4-0 lead after three.

The Griffons tacked on three more in the top of the fifth getting four more hits with Kat Steponovich getting a two RBI on a single to center field. After the fifth the Griffons led 7-0.

Bishop went six innings giving up just three hits while striking out six and walking just two. She improves to 13-4 with the victory.

The Lopers had four hits with four different players getting hits. Taryn Trosper got the loss going 2.2 innings giving up seven hits and four earned runs. She falls to 1-4 on the season.

Game 2
MWSU 8, UNK 5 (10 innings)

In game two the Griffons came from behind picking up the big road victory. MWSU got 13 hits with Gillaspy going 3-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored.

Gilaspy opened up the game getting her 7th homer of the season in the top of the first giving MWSU the 2-0 lead. The Lopers responded getting two runs in both the first and second inning taking a 4-2 lead after two.

The Griffons got one back in the top of the third on a double from Keri Lorbert and an RBI single from Gillaspy cutting the Loper lead to 4-3 after three.

Janie Smith settled down nicely holding the Lopers to no runs for three straight innings, but in the bottom of the sixth the Lopers got another run giving them the 5-3 lead after six.

In the seventh Brooke Schaben led off the innning with a double and then Bre Fleschner got on by an error by the second baseman. Fleschner would steal second and Gillaspy singled in both runners tying the score at five.

Smith held the Lopers scoreless the rest of the way and finally in the 10th the Griffons broke the tie. Gillaspy started at second due to the international tie-breaker rule and scored on a passed ball. Maegan Roemmich hit her 6th homer of the season later in the inning giving the Griffons the 8-5 lead.

Smith picked up her 13th victory of the season going all 10 innings. She gave up 11 hits while striking out a season high eight. Keri Lorbert, Michelle Stevenson, Roemmich and Anding all had two hits in the game.

The Lopers fall to 7-21 on the season and 2-10 in MIAA play. Mallory Noakes, Jen Kramer and Kenzie Helmink all had two hits while Bailey Backhuus got the loss going 3.2 innings giving up three hits and two earned runs while striking out wo.

The Griffons return to MIAA action with a double header against the Lincoln Blue Tigers. Game time is set for 5:00 pm from the MWSU Softball Field.

MWSU women’s tennis shuts out Lincoln Saturday

MWSUThe Missouri Western tennis team won it’s second straight match and third out of their last four on Saturday afternoon defeating Lincoln University 9-0. The Griffons improve to 6-13 overall and 2-8 in MIAA play with the victory.

In doubles action the Griffons got three points with No. 1 due of Meara Smith and Denise Chiao picking up an 8-3 victory over Alina Katrevich and Abigail Gober. Kayla Dysart and Alyssa Dougan defeated Kamaria Braye and Ashley Roling 8-1 in No. 2 doubleand Ceara Boldridge and Jode Goers defeated Gabrielle Quine and Jasmine Daniel 8-4 in No. 3 doubles.

In singles action the Griffons picked up six more points with Chiao defeating Gober 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles while Dysart defeated Braye 6-2, 6-0 in No. 3 singles. Smith defeated Katrevich 6-4, 6-2 while Boldridge won 6-1, 6-1 over Roling. Beger and Dougan won by scored of 6-4, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-0 over Quinn and Daniel respectively.

The Blue Tigers falls to 1-8 overall and 0-8 in MIAA play.

The Griffons return to action on Monday, April 8 when they take on the William Jewell Cardinals in St. Joseph, Mo. First serve is set for 2:00 pm.

Griffon softball gets swept at No. 18 Fort Hays State

MWSUThe Missouri Western softball team fell twice on Friday afternoon in Hays, Kan. against the 18th ranked Fort Hays State Tigers. In game one the Griffons lost a heart-breaker 2-1 in 12 innings and then fell in the night cap 11-3 in six innings. The Griffons 12 game winning streak ended as they fall to 24-10 overall and 8-4 in MIAA play.

Game 1
FHSU 2, MWSU 1 (12 innings)

The Griffon softball team lost a heart breaker in the opener against the 18th ranked Tigers from Fort Hays State falling 2-1.

The Griffons had six hits against FHSU’s pitcher Maddie Holub but stranded runners on base in nine of the 12 innings stranding 12 total runners.

The two teams played scoreless softball until the 10th inning when the international tie-breaker was put into effect. The Griffons struck first when Sarah Elliott tripled in Taylor Anding giving MWSU the 1-0 lead.

Bre Fleschner then reached on a dropped fly ball but got called out for leaving first base early. Tiffany Gillaspy then ropped a line drive up the middle that went off the pitcher to the third baseman which ended the inning.

In the bottom of the 10th Bishop got the first two outs but Bianca Adame doubled down the left field line scoring Katlyn Kern sending the game to the 11th.

In the 11th the Griffons stranded runners on second and third and in the bottom of the 11th Holub hit a line drive to center field which was caught by Maegan Roemmich. Roemmich then tossed Courtney Dobson out at third trying to advance.

The game moved to the 12th where MWSU could not get a run across. In the bottom of the 12th Jenna Lang hit a bouncer to shortstop which scored Adara Erickson from third giving FHSU the win.

Bishop gave up just three hits in 11.1 innings of work. She did not give up an earned run while striking out 11 and walking five. She falls to 12-4 with the loss. Michelle Stevenson had two of the Griffons six hits.

Holub improves 16-1 on the season going all 12 innings giving up six hits while striking out 17.

Game 2
FHSU 11, MWSU 3 (6 Innings)

In game two nothing went well for the Griffons as the Tigers got 14 hits scoring in five of the six innings dropping MWSU 11-3 in six innings.

The Tigers jumped out to a 9-0 lead after three innings. The Griffons were able to load the bases in the fourth scoring two runs. They also scored one in the fifth cutting the Hays lead to 9-3.

Unfortunately that was all the Griffons got going as the Tigers scored one in the fifth and one in the six getting the run rule victory. The Tigers improve to 31-5 overall and 11-1 in MIAA play.

Janie Smith falls to 12-4 going just three innings giving up 10 hits and nine earned runs with five walks. Emily MOe went 2.2 innings giving up four hits and one earned run.

Paxton Duran picked up the victory improving to 13-4 for the Tigers. She went all six innings giving up three hits and one earned run. Courtney Dobson led the way with three hits, four runs scored and one RBI for the Tigers.

The Griffons will travel to Kearney, Neb. on Saturday, April 6 for a double header with the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.

Missouri Western tennis edges Graceland, 5-4

riggertMissouriWesternThe Missouri Western tennis team avenged a 6-3 loss against Graceland University by winning 5-4 on the road on Friday afternoon. The Griffons picked up the fifth victory of the season and sit at 5-13 on the season.

The Griffons picked up victories in two of the three doubles matches to open the match. No. 2 doubles pair of Kayla Dysart and Alyssa Dougan defeated Heidi Myer and Michelle Maqueda 8-1 while Ceara Boldridge and Lindsay Beger defeated Sofia Jaramillo and Paige Robino in No. 3 doubles 8-1.

In singles competition the Griffons got victories from the bottom of the line-up. No. 4 player Ceara Boldridge defeated Maqueda 6-1, 6-2 while Beger defeated Heidi Myer 6-2, 6-2. No. 6 player Alyssa Dougan got the winning match defeating Robino 6-1, 6-0.

Graceland falls to 6-6 with the loss.

The Griffons return to action on Saturday, April 6 with an MIAA contest in St. Joseph against Lincoln University. Match time is set for 1:00 pm.
