Big 12 Conference athletics directors meet in Dallas

The Big 12 athletics directors met in Dallas and discussed content distributed on existing and future institutional and conference media platforms.

In previous discussions the Big 12 ADs unanimously agreed that no high school content would be distributed, consistent with NCAA rules. Today, the ADs of the Big 12 Conference unanimously agreed to establish a minimum one-year moratorium on the broadcast of any high school content (or any other content involving prospective student-athletes) via any medium branded as a Conference or member institution platform (and no use will be permitted thereafter unless and until the NCAA determines that such use is permissible).

In addition, the ADs recommend the Big 12 Board of Directors strongly request the NCAA Board of Directors establish a national moratorium for a minimum of one year in order for the entire NCAA membership to determine whether such use should be permissible under NCAA regulations.   The ADs recognize that this issue is complex and involves a detailed analysis of the recruiting model in many areas, including existing NCAA legislation related to the publicity of prospective student-athletes and the rapidly evolving world of technology. This process will take an extended period of analysis. The Conference will continue to monitor the broadcasting of youth athletics content.

In addition, the ADs learned and acknowledged that there may be contractual opportunities that allow more than one football game to be broadcast on institutions’ branded networks. That game could be a Conference matchup. In these instances both member institutions and the Conference office must agree to the selection. Such games would result in additional financial and exposure opportunities for the rest of the membership.

All actions by Conference athletics directors are subject to Big 12 Conference Board of Directors approval.

Missouri State picked ninth in preseason MVFC poll

Not even Missouri State’s wins over three Top 25 opponents and a pair of Division I playoff teams a year ago were enough to impress its peers around the Missouri Valley Football Conference with the release of the league’s 2011 preseason poll and all-conference team on Monday (Aug. 1).

Coming off a third-place tie at 4-4 in the MVFC standings in 2010, the Bears were picked ninth in this year’s conference preseason poll as selected by league coaches, media and sports information directors. It marks the first time since 1987 that MSU has been picked last in the league preseason poll.

“It’s more important where you are at the end of the season than at the beginning,” said MSU head coach Terry Allen who is beginning his sixth season with the Bears. “We have a lot of new faces, so I understand why they put us where they did.”

The Bears return five starters on offense and four on defense, but will have 34 lettermen and 56 squad members back when camp opens Aug. 4.

Including eight seasons at Northern Iowa, this is also the first time in 13 MVFC seasons that Allen has been picked last in the conference preseason poll. In those 13 years, his squads have never finished worse than predicted, with six finishes higher than projected and seven as projected, including six years when UNI was picked to win the conference and did so.

Northern Iowa recieved 29 of the 36 first-place votes and 316 total points to hold down the top spot in this year’s poll. The Panthers were followed by North Dakota State with six first-place votes and 275 points and Southern Illinois with the remaining top vote and 207 total points. South Dakota State (172), Illinois State (169), Indiana State (168), Western Illinois (151) and Youngstown State (88) were ranked fourth through eighth, respectively, while the Bears tallied 74 total points — by far the most ever by a team picked last in the MVFC preseason poll, which dates to 1986.

The only MSU player to earn Preseason All-MVFC first-team distinction is wide receiver Jermaine Saffold (Sr., Grandview, Mo.) who was an All-MVFC second-team selection last year after he caught 53 passes for 869 yards and five touchdowns.  Three other Bears earned Preseason All-MVFC honorable mention status, including All-America candidate Chris Douglas (Sr., RB, Lawrenceville, Ga.), punter Jordan Chiles (Sr., Hillsboro, Ill.) and cornerback Jimmie Strong (Sr., Texarkana, Texas).

In 2010, Douglas became just the 10th MSU back to accumulate 1,000 rushing yards in a single season when he tallied 1,051 yards on 152 carries, scored 11 touchdowns and finished second in the nation in yards per carry (6.9). He achieved all that while getting just one start and sharing the workload with classmate Stephen Johnston who had 147 carries, 752 yards and 10 starts.

Chiles averaged 38.3 yards per punt as a junior. Half of his 56 punts were fair caught or downed inside the opponents’ 20-yard line, and he is poised for his fourth season as a starter on the Bears’ special teams.

Strong led the Bears with four interceptions in 2010 and did so in just nine games as he spent a great deal of his junior year fighting the injury bug. He tallied 31 total tackles and defended six passes.

Consensus Draft Services picked Douglas as a preseason All-America running back earlier this summer. Meanwhile, Saffold, Douglas, Strong and Chiles garnered preseason honors by being named to the College Football Performance Awards Watch Lists for their respective positions. Likewise, Phil Steele’s College Football Preview named Saffold and Chiles as preseason All-MVFC first-team picks, while the publication had Douglas, Strong and linebacker Nick Canavan (So., Norman, Okla.) on the preseason second team.

Season tickets for MSU’s four-game home slate are available by calling (417) 836-7678. The Bears went undefeated at Plaster Field in 2010 and own a six-game home winning streak headed into the 2011 season.

The Bears will kick off the 2011 season at Arkansas on Sept. 3 (6:00 p.m.) and will play their first four contests on the road, including their MVFC opener at Southern Illinois on Sept. 24.

Three former Jayhawks sign rookie free agent contracts

Three members of last year’s Kansas football team have signed free agent contracts with teams in the National Football League this week and will be competing for roster spots in August. Defensive back Chris Harris (Denver), defensive end Jake Laptad (Chicago) and offensive lineman Brad Thorson (Arizona) have all signed contracts with their respective teams over the past few days.

Harris, a 5-foot-10 defensive back from Bixby, Okla., has said he will play both corner and safety with the Denver Broncos. Harris was a four-year starter at KU, making 42-consecutive starts from 2007-10. He was third on the Jayhawks with 82 tackles last season, including 5 ½ for a loss and two sacks. His 288 career tackles were the third-most by a defensive back in Kansas history. Harris served a team captain in 2010.

Laptad, a 6-foot-4 defensive end from Tulsa, Okla., signed with the Chicago Bears Thursday afternoon. Laptad was a three-year starter at defensive end for the Jayhawks and recorded 21 sacks in his career, which ranks as the second-most in KU history. Laptad finished the 2010 season with 38 tackles and 4 ½ sacks, with all of them coming in conference play. He was a three-time All-Big 12 Honorable Mention in his career at KU and was named to the Conference’s All-Freshman team in 2007.

Thorson, a 6-foot-5 offensive tackle from Mequon, Wis., signed with the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday. Thorson played two years at Wisconsin before transferring to KU prior to the 2008 season. He started 24 consecutive games for the Jayhawks from 2009-10, including all 12 contests last year. He was named the team’s Offensive Lineman of the Year in both 2009 and 2010 and was a two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection. Thorson also was a member of the Big 12 Good Works team, which honors student-athletes for work within the community.

Harris, Laptad and Thorson will be three of 11 former Jayhawks who will be involved in NFL training camps this summer.

All three players have reported to their teams and started camp. They will likely be fighting for roster spots throughout the preseason. NFL teams will trim their rosters down to 75 players on Aug. 31 and to 53 players on Sept. 4.

Three former Wildcats sign rookie free agent contracts

Three former Kansas State letterwinners – long snapper Corey Adams, defensive back Stephen Harrison and running back/kick returner William Powell – have agreed to free agent deals with NFL clubs as of Wednesday afternoon.

Adams agreed to terms with the Dallas Cowboys, Harrison signed a deal with the San Diego Chargers, and Powell inked a free agent contract with the Arizona Cardinals.

Adams played in 49 games in his Wildcat career from 2007-10 and was perfect on all 483 snaps, including 65 field goal/PAT snaps and 61 punt snaps in 2010. The Monument, Colo., product was a 2010 All-American by Phil Steele and was named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team for a third-consecutive season. Adams will join former Wildcat great Terence Newman, who has played for Dallas since being drafted by the franchise in 2003.

A two-year letterwinner at cornerback, Harrison played in 23 games over the 2009 and 2010 seasons, carding 65 career tackles, including 40 in 2010. A former walk-on, Harrison broke up 14 passes as a senior last season to tie for second in the Big 12 and 18th nationally after ranking seventh and 33rd, respectively, in 2009. Harrison joins former K-State offensive lineman Jeromey Clary, who agreed to terms on a four-year deal to re-sign with the club on Tuesday.

Powell played in 15 games as a Wildcat, including nine as the team’s kickoff returner and a backup running back in 2010. The Duncanville, Texas, product was elected a First Team All-Big 12 kick returner by the league’s coaches, the Kansas City Star and Phil Steele, while he was an honorable mention returner by the Associated Press. He totaled the second-most kickoff return yards in school history with 726, and four of his 21 returns were longer than 50 yards, including a school-record 100-yarder at Baylor. Powell will be joined in Arizona by former Kansas State linebacker Reggie Walker, who is entering his third season with the Cardinals.

The Wildcats, who are coming off an appearance in the 2010 Pinstripe Bowl, open the 2011 season against Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, September 3, with the third-annual K-State Family Reunion. A four-pack of tickets is available for $75 (less than $20 per ticket), and reserved view level and north end zone tickets are available for only $20. Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 6:10 p.m.

Mel Tjeerdsma, who retired in December 2010 after coaching the Bearcats for 17 seasons, elevated the Northwest football program to one of the greatest in the history of Division II.

Under his leadership, the Bearcats won back-to-back national championships in 1998 and 1999. Northwest added a third championship in 2009, capping an unprecedented run of five national championship game appearances that began in 2005.

Among his peers in Division II, Tjeerdsma’s 242 victories are third on the active wins list when he retired, and he tallied more postseason victories than any other coach in Division II history. He led Northwest to the playoffs 13 times in the last 15 seasons, sporting a 32-10 overall postseason record and is the program’s all-time winningest coach.

From 1996 to his last season in 2010, Tjeerdsma’s teams won 12 conference championships, and 10 of those teams finished 9-0 in league play. Northwest won 41 consecutive conference games from 1997-2001, a record that stood until his squad surpassed it in 2010.

Tjeerdsma was the Liberty Mutual Division II National Coach of the Year in 2009 and was among the first three coaches inducted into the NCAA Division II College Football Hall of Fame in 2010. He is a 12-time MIAA Coach of the Year honoree and was inducted into the MIAA Hall of Fame in June.

Carol Tjeerdsma retired from Northwest in June as instructor of curriculum and instruction. After arriving at Northwest with her husband in 1994, she became an integral part of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, teaching special education and general education courses. She was chair of the College of Education and Human Services’ Diversity Team, coordinated volunteer projects and served on the board of directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nodaway County.

Northwest football adds seven transfers for 2011

Northwest Missouri State Head Coach Adam Dorrel has announced the addition of seven transfers on Tuesday for the upcoming 2011 football season including four members from former MIAA member Nebraska-Omaha.

“We have seven guys that can come in and contribute right away,” said Dorrel.  “It’s been a great summer and have new guys coming in and doing everything that is asked of them.  We are also adding a group of players that are proven at the Division II level and in the MIAA.”

In total the Bearcats have added five Division II transfers and two junior college transfers.

A trio of offensive players from UNO include: Brian Miller (WR), John Becklon (OL), and James Franklin (RB), and Jerry Key (CB) on the defensive side of the ball.  Also from Division II Texas A&M-Kingsville is Derrick Thomas (CB) who played against the Bearcats twice last season.  Rounding out the group is Jon Gregg (TE) from Monterey Peninsula Junior College and Travis Chappelear (DE) who played one season at Missouri State.

“We really believe we added seven guys who fit our system,” said Dorrel, who enters his first season at the helm after replacing the late Scott Bostwick who passed on June 5. “The men we have brought in have done a good job and worked hard this summer.  They all are fitting in well and buying into what Northwest football is all about.”

Thomas was a second-team all-Lone Star Conference selection at cornerback for the Javelinas and and brings a physical style of play to the Bearcat secondary.  The San Antonio native started in all 12 games in 2010 including two match-ups with Northwest.

“Derrick is a special player and to have him in our secondary we fortunate,” Dorrel said.  “He has lockdown corner ability and has proven he can compete at a high level in Division II.”

Brian Miller is a speedy receiver from UNO who was second in receiving with 476 yards.  A Kansas City product, Miller caught 26 passes and averaged 18.3 yards per catch for the Mavericks in his sophomore season.

John Becklun also comes from Nebraska-Omaha where he saw limited action in four games as a redshirt freshman.  Running back James Franklin also joins Beckun and Miller in the green and white after earning honorable mention all-MIAA honors as a true freshman.  Franklin was the second leading rusher for the Mavericks in his only season carrying the ball 158 times for over 820 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Jerry Key also joins the Bearcats from UNO as a corner back playing in 10 games in one season for the Mavericks.  Key brings even more talent to the Northwest secondary and could be a valuable asset on special teams.

“The men from UNO are all proven players in the MIAA,” said Dorrel.  “All four can contribute right away.  Brian (Miller) is a big tall receiver with great hands that we had tried to recruit out of Parkhill High School in Kansas City, so we’re happy to finally get him back on campus.  John has great foot speed and brings flexibility to the offensive line being able to play either guard or center.  James Franklin is also going to be a great fit in our offense where we can get him the ball a number of ways.  He has great vision in the open field and along with Jerry Key’s talent they will both find a spot on the field on Saturdays.”

Dorrel also added a pair of ends on each side of the ball in Jon Gregg, a tight end from Monterey Peninsula Junior College.  Travis Chappelear will join the Bearcats on the defensive side of the ball at defensive end and nose guard after playing one season at Missouri State.

“Jon has been working hard and has great hands and is a former basketball player converted tight end fitting the mold for a number of ends in today’s game,” Dorrel said.  “Chappelear will also bring some great versatility to the defensive line where he has played nose guard and at the end positions which is a rare trait.”

The Bearcats report on August 10th with the first fall practice starting Thursday August 11th.  Head Coach Dorrel and the Bearcats will close out fall camp on the 25th with a scrimmage open to the public followed by Meet the Bearcats Night before opening the Season on September 1 at Truman State.

Big 12 announces new branding campaign

The Big 12 Conference, in conjunction with its football media days in Dallas, has announced a new branding and imaging campaign to debut with the start of the 2011 season.

The campaign will focus on “How We Play” in the Big 12 and highlight the core purpose of the Conference.  Its primary attention will be on three features of the league that make it unique – fierce rivalries, heartland values and one true champion.

“How We Play will showcase the strengths and uniqueness of Big 12 membership as we move forward into our bright and stable future,” said Commissioner Dan Beebe.  “It will allow us to continue our place as one of the nation’s premier intercollegiate athletic conferences.”

The initiative highlights the rivalries among Big 12 institutions and the fact they will only intensify by playing every team on an annual basis.  A second component focuses on the heartland values of middle America – competitiveness, integrity, mutual respect, and the value of education.  The third point stresses that with full round-robin scheduling, the Big 12 will crown one true champion.

“The extensive research we conducted on behalf of the Big 12 uncovered attributes of the conference that make it unique and special,” said Jeff Orth, Account Director at GSD&M, the company working with the Big 12 on the campaign.  “This campaign is going to promote those attributes, and we look forward to showcasing all facets as we enter the fall seasons.”
