Mustangs fall at home to North Kansas City Apartments 7-5

The St. Joseph Mustangs were back in action Wednesday night after two days off and St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team lost a non-league game to North Kansas City 7-5 inside Phil Welch Stadium.

The Mustangs fall to 14-5.

North Kansas City scored three runs in the first inning before St. Joseph scored five unanswered runs. They got a run in the first, three in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth inning. The Giants then rallied with three runs of their own in the sixth and they tacked another run on in the seventh inning.

The Mustangs loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning but Derek Hussey flew out to left field for the final out of the game.

St. Joe starter Alec Byous suffered the loss as he allowed six runs on six hits in 5+ innings of work.

The Mustangs managed only four hits on Wednesday. Jordan Maxson hit a home run, while Hussey, Terrance Spurlin and Karl Koerper added one single each.

St. Joseph gets back into MINK League play Thursday as they host Nevada at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Bednar’s complete game shutout leads Mustangs past Jeff City 2-0

The St. Joseph Mustangs traveled to Jefferson City Sunday and picked up a 2-0 shutout victory over the Renegades.

It’s the third straight win for St. Joe’s collegiate baseball team as they improve to 14-4 and 12-3 in the MINK League.

Mustangs’ starter Cam Bednar, who was named the MINK League Pitcher of the Week last week, threw a complete game shutout as he allowed just four hits. Bednar struck out 10 and walked two batters.

Both St. Joseph runs came from catcher J.P. Tighe as he hit his first home run of the season in the third and added a two-out RBI single in the fourth.

Terrance Spurlin had two hits for the Mustangs as well and he scored the other St. Joe run.

The Mustangs are off until Wednesday when they play a non-league game against the North Kansas City Apartments at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Mustangs rally from eight-run deficit to defeat Nevada

The St. Joseph Mustangs rallied from a 14-6 deficit Saturday to defeat the Nevada Griffons 20-16 in a four hour game at Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team improves to 13-4 this season and they’re 11-3 in the MINK League.

The two teams traded three runs innings in the first two frames as the game was tied at six after two innings. Nevada then scored eight run in the top of the third and it stayed 14-6 until the fourth inning when the Mustangs exploded for 10 runs to take the lead for good. St. Joseph would scored 14 unanswered runs before the Griffons put two on the board in the ninth inning.

Jackson Dierenfeldt had four hits, four runs and two RBI, while Terrance Spurlin added three hits and five runs batted in. Drew Beazly had three hits and Karl Koerper scored five runs for the Mustangs.

Mack Stephenson earned the win in relief as he threw 3.1 scoreless innings. He struck out seven and allowed just two hits.

Colten Kenagy started for St. Joe but he struggled as he allowed six earned runs and eight hits in 2.2 innings.

The Mustangs are on the road Sunday as they travel to Jefferson City for a 7:00 p.m first pitch with the Renegades.

Mustangs rally to defeat Alumni 11-4

The St. Joseph Mustangs rallied from an early deficit to roll past the Mustangs Alumni team 11-4 Friday night at Phil Welch Stadium. St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team improves to 12-4 on on the season.

The Alumni jumped out to a quick lead as Johnny Coy, the Mustangs current manager, drove in two runs in the first inning and they led 3-0 in the second.

St. Joseph bounced back with two in the second and then they added four runs in the third inning and four more in the fifth to blow the game open.

Hampton Hudson led the Mustangs offense as he went 2-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored. Jackson Wagner added two hits, while Dylan Ketch and Karson Reid scored two runs each.

Ronnie Wiggington earned the win as he went five innings and allowed three runs on four hits.

The Mustangs get back into MINK League play Saturday as they host the Nevada Griffons at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joseph suffers non-league loss to KC Monarchs 6-4

The St. Joseph Mustangs lost to the Kansas City Monarchs 6-4 Thursday in a non-league game inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team drops to 11-4 this season.

The Monarch jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed in the game. The Mustangs got one run back in the second but Kansas City scored two runs in the fourth and two more in sixth inning to put the game out of reach.

St. Joseph outhit KC 11-6 but the three Mustangs pitchers walked 12 batters while the Monarchs didn’t walk anybody.

Michael Mathews sufferd the loss as allowed four runs and three hits in 3.1 innings. Mathews struck out four but walked eight.

Logan Rycraft led the Mustangs with two hits and two RBI, while Terrance Spurlin and Derek Hussey added two hits each.

St. Joe will play another non-league game Friday night at Phil Welch Stadium as they play their annual game against Mustang Alumni players. The first pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs snap two-game skid with 6-2 win over Clarinda

The St. Joseph Mustangs snapped their two-game losing streak Wednesday as they defeated the Clarinda A’s 6-2 inside Phil Welch Stadium.

After the Mustangs scored a run in the first inning, Clarinda took the lead with two runs and it stayed that way until the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, St. Joseph catcher Jordan Maxson hit a three-run home run to put the Mustangs ahead for good and they added two more in the eighth inning.

Jackson Dierenfeldt finished 3-for-5 for St. Joe, while Jack Wagner scored two runs.

Ryan Scharf earned the win in relief as didn’t allow a run or hit in 1.2 innings. He struck out four and walked just one. Mahlyk Davis started and went 6.1 innings. He gave up two runs on three hits.

The Mustangs are back in action Thursday as they play a non-league game against the Kansas City Monarchs at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Mustangs drop second straight at Jefferson City

The St. Joseph Mustangs lost their second consecutive game Tuesday as they fell at Jefferson City 7-6.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team drops to 10-3 and 9-3 in the MINK League, while the Renegades improve to 5-5.

The Mustangs led 1-0 after two innings and 3-1 after five, but Jeff City scored four in the bottom of the sixth inning to take their first lead. Both teams scored one run in the seventh before St. Joseph rallied with the two in the top of the eighth to tie the game. The Renegades then scored one run in the bottom of the eighth inning that turned out to be the winning run.

Jared Wilson suffered the loss in relief for the Mustangs as he allowed one run and three hits in the eight inning. Alec Byous started and went five innings as he gave up five runs and seven hits.

Jackson Dierenfeldt had a double and two RBI, while Jack Wagner and Brady Holden drove in one run each.

The Mustangs return to Phil Welch Stadium for a four-game home stand. It begins Wednesday night against the Clarinda A’s at 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs lose at Jefferson City 6-4

The St. Joseph Mustangs suffered their second loss of the season Monday as they fell at Jefferson City 6-4.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team drops to 10-2 this season and 9-2 in the MINK League.

Jeff City scored single runs in second, third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-0 lead before the Mustangs rallied with three runs in the sixth. That was as close as St. Joseph would get as the Renegades extended their lead to 6-3 before the Mustangs scored one run in the ninth inning.

St. Joe committed six errors Monday and the three Mustangs pitchers combined to walk ten batters.

Cameron July suffered the loss as he allowed three runs and two hits in three innings of work. He struck out four and walked six.

Hampton Hudson, playing in his first game of the season for St. Joseph, went 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Karl Koerper added a double and one run batted in.

The Mustangs play in Jefferson City again Tuesday as the first pitch with the Renedages is set for 7:00 p.m. from Vivion Field.

Mustangs rally to defeat Nevada 3-2

The St. Joseph Mustangs rallied to defeat Nevada 3-2 Saturday night inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team has won three straight as they improve to a franchise best 10-1 record and they’re 9-1 in the MINK League.

Mustangs’ starter Cam Bednar made just two mistakes in his seven innings of work as he allowed solo home runs to Brayland Skinner and Colemen Fenton in the third and sixth innings.

The Griffons led 2-0 until St. Joseph’s Karsen Reid had an RBI single in the sixth to cut the lead in half. The Mustangs then tied the game in the seventh inning Jackson Dierenfeldt scored on a wild pitch from Chase Beiter. St. Joe then took the lead for good in the eighth when Jordan Maxson hit a two-out infield single to score Logan Rycraft.

Dierenfeldt finished 3-for-5 and Dylan Ketch added two hits.

Bednar received a no decision as he allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings. Bednar struck out 11 and walked three. Jake Purl earned the win in relief as he threw two scoreless innings. Purl allowed just one hit as he struck out five.

The Mustangs have the day off Sunday before traveling to Jefferson City to face the Renegades as 7:00 p.m. Monday.

Mustangs suffer first loss as they split doubleheader with Ozark

The St. Joseph Mustangs finally lost their first game of the season Thursday, but they did bounce back to split a doubleheader with the Ozark Generals inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team dropped the opener 1-0 before taking the nightcap 8-4. The Mustangs are now 8-1 this season and 7-1 in the MINK League.

Game one was a pitchers dual as the two teams combined for just seven hits in the seven inning game. St. Joseph starter Mahlyk Davis allowed one run in the first inning and that was all Ozark would need. Davis gave up one run and four hits in six innings of work. He also struck out six and didn’t walk a batter.

Jackson Wagner had two of the three Mustangs’ hits.

In game two, the Generals scored one run in the top of the first but St. Joe then scored six unanswered runs over the first four innings and they cruised to the 8-4 win.

Ozark committed six errors to help the Mustangs as they scored four unearned runs. Karl Koerper had two hits and an RBI, while Wagner and Terrane Spurlin added one run batter in each.

Colton Kenagy threw a seven inning complete game to get the win on the mound for St. Joseph. He allowed two hits and three earned runs. Kenagy struck out 11 and walked five.

The Mustangs wrap up their three-game series with Ozark Friday at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.
