Mustangs rally past Tulsa to win NBC opener Sunday

The St. Joseph Mustangs overcame a 3-1 deficit after seven innings Sunday and won their NBC World Series opener at Wichita against the Tulsa Cardinals, 8-4.

St. Joe’s summer college team improves to 35-19 this season and they’re 3-0 all-time in NBC opening games.

The Mustangs struggled offensive against Tulsa starter Morgan Croft as they had just four hits through seven innings and trailed by two runs.

But the Cardinals then went to the bullpen and used three pitchers in the eighth and St. Joe put up six runs in the eighth and one in the ninth inning for just their second win this season when trailing after seven innings.

Kyle Simpson had an RBI single to make it a 3-2 game in the eighth and then Kris Koerper hit a sacrafice fly to tie the game.

Tanner Lubach then came to the plate with two outs and the two runners on base with the game tied.  He hit a line drive to center field that Tyler Lein dove for and missed and it rolled all the way to the fence.

Lubach raced around the bases for an inside-the-park home run that broke the tie and put the Mustangs ahead 6-3.

Patrick Burkhart added an RBI single and Koeper drove in Simpson with a single in the ninth inning.

St. Joseph starter Cody Cunningham improved to 8-0 this summer as he went seven innings and allowed just two earned runs.  He struck out nine and walked one batter.

Simpson led St. Joe offensive as he went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and one RBI.  Lubach had two hit and three RBI.

St. Joe moves on to the second round as they’ll play Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Wichita against either the Tulsa Braves or the Kansas Cannons.  The game will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 AM.

Mustangs get knocked out of regional by Chillicothe

The St. Joseph Mustangs got knocked out of the Heart of America NBC Regional Thursday night as St. Joe’s summer college baseball team lost to Chillicothe, 12-6.

The Mustangs jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after the first inning, but the Mudcats dominated the game the rest of the way as they scored nine unanswered runs over the next four innings and cruised to the win.

Kris Koerper led the way offensively as he went 3-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored, two RBI and two walks.  Mark Robinette added three hits and he drove in one run, while Kyle Simpson and Shane Segovia also had one RBI.

Jonathan McCann started for St. Joseph and fell to 2-2.  The Central graduate allowed seven earned runs and 14 hits over five innings of work.

The Mustangs drop to 34-19 and they’re off until Sunday when they begin play in the NBC World Series against the Tulsa Cardinals.  The first pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. and it’ll be broadcast live on ESPN 1550 AM.

St. Joseph falls to Nevada in NBC Regional

The St. Joseph Mustangs fell to the losers bracket for the Heart of American NBC Regional Wednesday night as they lost to Nevada, 9-6.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team will now play Chillicothe in an elimination game Thursday at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

The Mustangs led 2-1 after two innings against Nevada, but the Griffons answered back with four runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth inning.

st. Joseph battled back with four in the fifth to pull within one run as Carlos Rodriguez hit a grand slam, but Nevada put the game away with two runs in the eighth.

Kyle Richards had two hits and two RBI for St. Joe, while Kyle Simpson, Kris Koerper and Shane Segovia added two hits each.

Stanten Jones suffered the loss as he started and lasted just 3.1 innings.  He allowed five runs on two hits as he walked five batters in the game.

The Mustangs drop to 34-18 this season and their game Thursday with Chillicothe will air live on ESPN 1550 AM.

Mustangs open regional with 9-2 win over Omaha Strike Zone

The St. Joseph Mustangs opened the Heart of American Regional Tuesday at Phil Welch Stadium with a 9-2 victory over the Omaha Strike Zone.

The winner of the regional will qualify for the NBC World Series, but St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is hosting the regional and playing in it to stay sharp for the World Series.  If the Mustangs win, the second-place team will also go to Wichita.

On Tuesday, the Mustangs built an 8-0 lead after five innings as they scored one in the first, two runs in the third inning, one more in the fourth and they broke it open with a four-run fifth inning.

Mark Robinette went 3-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI, while Shane Segovia, Carlos Rodriguez and Kyle Richards added two hits each.

Jordan Guida hit his eighth home run of the season in the victory for St. Joseph.

Mustangs’ starting pitcher Adam Maddox improved to 4-1 as he went seven innings and allowed just two runs and four hits.  Maddox struck out three and didn’t walk a batter.

St. Joe improves to 34-17 this season and they’ll play MINK League opponent Nevada in the next round of the regional at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Cunningham Named MINK League Pitcher of the Year


Three members of the St Joseph Mustangs were honored by the MINK League Monday.

Chris Green was named MINK League Pitcher of the Week. In two games last week, Green pitched 4.2 innings, allowed one run and two hits, struck out four batters, and posted an ERA of 0.00.

Green earned his first win during game three of the MINK League Championship against Sedalia Sunday night. Green hails from Neosho, Missouri and plays for Northwest Missouri State University.

Infielder Tim Caputo was named MINK League Player of the Week. In five games last week, Caputo had 15 at bats and nine hits. He earned a slugging percentage of .733, with four runs, two doubles, five RBIs, and two walks. His batting average was .600.

Caputo is from Greenlawn, New York, and plays for the University of Rhode Island.

Cody Cunningham, of Haslet, Texas, was named MINK League Pitcher of the Month and Pitcher of the Year. In July, Cunningham pitched four games, and posted two wins. He pitched 26.2 innings, allowing just eight earned runs and 24 hits, while striking out 15 players. His ERA was 1.76 in July.

Cunningham currently leads the league in wins with seven. He is third in strike outs (45) and fifth in ERA (2.13). Cunningham started in nine games during the season, and won seven, striking out 45 batters. He had a .197 opposing batting average and a complete game shutout. Cunningham is from Haslet, Texas and plays for West Texas.

Player of the Month honors went to Robert Preito of the Ozark Generals. Nick Billinber of Ozark was named Player of the Year.

Mustangs rally past Sedalia for second straight MINK championship

The St. Joseph Mustangs scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning Sunday night as they rallied past Sedalia, 7-6, to win their second consecutive MINK League Championship.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team fell behind 1-0 in the best-of-three championship series, but they won back-to-back games to win back-to-back MINK titles in just their fourth year of exsistence.

The Mustangs fell behind 3-0 Sunday before Tanner Lubach hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to get St. Joseph on the board.

St. Joe then took the lead in the sixth as Kyle Simpson drove in two runs and Kris Koeper had an RBI ground out to give the Mustangs a 4-3 lead.

Sedalia then rallied in the eighth as Michael Gunn hit a two-out, two-run double as St. Joseph fell behind 5-4.

The Mustangs tied the game in the bottom of the eighth as Koerper had another ground out to score Saulyer Saxon.

The game went into extra innings after both teams came up empty in the ninth, but Sedalia took the lead back with a two-out RBI single by Kolby Peebles.

St. Joseph wasted no time bouncing back as Saxon led of the tenth with a single and Simpson double to left center to tie the game.

After Mark Robinette walked and Koeper had an infield single, Jordan Guida grounded to third base with the bases load and Kyle Hardy bobbled the ball and his throw home was late as pinch runner Patrick Burkhart scored the winning run.

Saxon led St. Joe with three hits and three runs, while Simpson and Robinette had two hits each.

Cody Cunningham started the game and went seven innings.  He allowed five runs and nine hits, while striking out five.

Chris Green earned the win despite giving up one run on one hit in the to pof the tenth.

The Mustangs improve to 33-17 this season as they’ll host an NBC Regional at Phil Welch Stadium this week in preperation for the NBC World Series in Wichita.

St. Joseph blows out Sedalia, 14-0, to force Game 3

The St. Joseph Mustangs forced a third and deciding game in the MINK League Championship series as St. Joe’s summer college baseball team hammered Sedalia in game two Saturday night at Phil Welch Stadium, 14-0.

The best-of-three series in now tied 1-1 and Game 3 is Sunday inside Phil Welch Stadium at 7:00 p.m.

The Mustangs wasted no time in bouncing back from losing game one Friday as they scored eight runs in the first inning and cruised to the win.

Kyle Simpson led the way in the opening frame as he had two doubles and he drove in three runs in the first inning.

The first five batters reached base and the first five scored as they sent 13 men to the plate.

St. Joseph added three runs in the third inning and three more in the fifth.

Kris Koerper and Tim Caputo each went 4-for-4 Saturday night with two runs scored and two RBI.

Saxton, Simpson, Mark Robinette and Jordan Guida added two hits each.

Aaron Baker, who improved to 5-2, threw a gem for the Mustangs as he went eight innings and allowed six hits and no runs.  He struck out six batters and walked just one.

St. Joseph improves to 32-17 and they’re 21-5 this season at home.

Game 3 between St. Joe and Sedalia will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 with pregame beginning at 6:45 p.m.

Mustangs lose game one of championship series to Sedalia

The St. Joseph Mustangs now have their back against the wall as they lost game one of the best-of-three MINK League Championship series at Sedalia Friday, 10-6.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team now has to win back-to-back games against the Bombers at Phil Welch Stadium to repeat as league champs.

Sedalia jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three innings and led 3-2 after four, but St. Joseph bounced back and scored four unanswered runs to take a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth.

Max LeFevre hit a sacrafice fly to score Jake Kretzer in the fifth inning to tie the game, then Shane Segovia drove in two-runs on a triple and Patrick Burkhart singled home Segovia.

The Bombers, who had a season-high 20 hits in the game, rallied back as they scored one run in the sixth, two in the seventh inning to tie the game and they broke a 6-6 tie in the eighth and took the lead for good with four runs off Mustangs’ reliever Phillip Wilson.

St. Joe’s pitchers struggled all night.

Kyle Jackson got the start and allowed three runs on 11 hits in just 4.1 innings.  Carlos Rodriguez went 2.1 innings and gave up five hits and three runs.  And Wilson sufffered the loss as he allowed four runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of work.

Segovia led the St. Joseph offense as he went 2-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored.  Burkhart and Kris Koerper added two hits each, and Jordan Guida scored twice.

Game two of the series will take place Saturday at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.  The game will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 AM.

St. Joseph loses regular season finale at Chillicothe

The St. Joseph Mustangs closed out their regular season Tuesday with a 9-5 loss at Chillicothe.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team ends the regular season as the MINK League North Division Champions, but they lost six of their last seven league games since clinching the title last Wednesday.

The Mustangs committed five errors in the loss as the Chillicothe scored in every inning but the first and sixth.

Adam Maddox suffered the loss as he lasted just five innings and allowed seven runs on six hits.  He struck out two and didn’t surrender a walk.

Tim Caputo and Kris Koerper led St. Joseph with two hits each, while Koerper, Jordan Guida and Jake Kretzer had one RBI a piece.

The Mustangs finish the regular season 31-16 and 26-16 in the MINK League.

St. Joe will be on the road Friday for Game one of the best-of-three MINK League Championship Series.  They play the winner of the South Division at 7:00 p.m. with games two and three in St. Joseph.

Mustangs win game one at Joplin in 16 innings; fall in game two


The St. Joseph Mustangs broke a four-game MINK League losing streak with a 5-2 victory in 16 innings at Joplin Monday, but then lost game two of the doubleheader, 3-2.

In game one, Mustangs’ shortstop Tim Caputo came up with the big hit for St. Joe as he hit a three-run double in the top of the 16th inning with one out to break a 2-2 tie.

St. Joseph jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third as Tanner Lubach hit a two-run single, but Joplin scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game.

Cody Cunningham made the start for the Mustangs as he went 6.1 innings and allowed nine hits and just one earned run.

St. Joe relievers Chris Green and Carlos Rodriguez combined to throw 9.2 innings as they allowed only three hits and no runs.  Rodriguez picked up his first win as he went six innings and struck out four.

Patrick Burkhart led the Mustangs’ 12-hit attack as he went 3-for-7, while Lubach, Mark Robinette and Shane Segovia had two hits each.

In game two, St. Joseph jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Kyle Simpson drove in Maxime LeFevre, but Joplin pitcher Travis Northern shut down the Mustangs until the seventh inning.

The Outlaws ended up taking the lead with single runs in the second, third and seventh innings, and then St. Joe rallied with one in the seventh, but that was all they could muster.

The Mustangs had just six hits and Tim Caputo led the way with two hits, including a double.

St. Joseph is now 31-15 and 26-15 in the MINK League.  They close out the regular season Tuesday night at Chillicothe at 7:00 p.m.
